Weekly Check In! (original) (raw)
1. Not in regards to my thesis really, cause I'm taking feburary off from working on that. But in the last week I ran most of the numbers I need for a conference presentation next week, made up slides for the results, and just now finished an r and r on a different paper that I've been revising for over a year! (and been working on for over 5 years..in both cases I blame the coauthor)
2. finish powerpoint presentaiton for the conference by monday, since I have to email it to the discussent then.
specifically: finish running numbers, add into results slides
descriptives slide
lit review slides (hopefully pirated from my comp/previous papers)
pirate some data and methods slides from previous presentations with the same data set
make up some interesting conclusions based on my confusing numbers
3. I embaressingly did not have a goal last week because I forgot to post a comment, even though I posted the original post! :)
I finally finished a beastly primary text (Adams). I didn't post last week, but I met with two advisers (the meetings were only semi-helpful) and presented my dissertation idea in my dissertation prep class and got really good feedback. Still need to find the one concrete item/concept to center all my abstract thoughts around, and am knocking a few ideas around that I want to present to my advisers before the end of the quarter.
Read The American Scene. This seems like such a small goal, but I've got to start somewhere. Selecting primary texts is such a slow, lengthy process. Hoping to ratchet things up by next week!
Set up appointment with third dissertation adviser to present current stage of the prospectus and officially ask her to be on my committee (YIKES). I only have one for-sure committee member now, so I really need to get on this.
- I didn't post a goal last week. Sigh.
1. Moving on to my dissertation prospectus, I cancelled a meeting with one of my advisors because of sickness. I need to figure out how her book fits into my theoretical framework. Didn't write my summary for presenting my thesis. Slept for four days. Okay, so accomplished nothing.
2. My goal for this week is to successfully defend my thesis, celebrate that and use the questions from my defense to create a 45 minute lecture that I am due to give in mid-March. I also need to meet with committee member re: her book and get something down that states what I think my dissertation may be about! I can do it!
3. No I did not.
Got back my draft all marked up.
Write an abstract of my thesis, assemble the bibliography and table of contents, revise the introduction. There's a deadline of Monday, Feb 18 to have these to my advisor...
Didn't make one because my draft was in the hands of my advisor.
this past week, i read a book about writing, and half of an article, and did some journaling.
i cleared my calendar of pointless timesuckers and decided this is turbo dissertation prospectus week. i don't know how it happened, but a fire's been lit under me.
i sort of accomplished my last week's goal of writing something, but i need to turn that into some sort of presentable document, even if it's unpolished.
1. Took notes on almost 1.5 primary texts. Had a really good talk w/my adviser today about where I'm at and what he expects.
2. Finish notes on remaining 2.25 primary texts and one secondary text.
3. No. It was "Finish note-taking for remaining 3.5 primary texts and two secondary texts." I keep overestimating what I can do.
1. Wrote and referenced a few more things in my review paper, worked out a design for this week's experiments and some rough ideas for future ones. Also, finally got my paper accepted to Letter in Applied Microbiology!
2. Write more for my review paper, start the writing on my second research, finish this week's experiments and get some decent results that I can write about....
3. I did write more in my review paper, even though I didn't double it b/c I was accomplishing my other goal, the schedule for the experiment.
Ok, so I have been under a rock and not playing for the past couple of weeks. I have, however:
1.) written 12 pages more on Ch. 1-- I'm averaging 6 pages a week, which is only wimpy if don't consider I'm taking a french class to get my second language requirement, teaching, and RAing for two profs in the meantime.
2.) 6+ pages, ad infinitum...
3.) actually, yes, although I didn't comment.
1. Finished my film reviews and my CUTF proposal. Went to a 3 hr meditation retreat and to my dissertation support group meeting.
2. Begin a habit of putting in 2-3 hours writing a day on diss. Go to meditation retreat again this weekend. Grade student papers a little bit every day, without feeling overwhelmed.
3. Took a bit of a breather once I got the CUTF proposal in--I've been working myself too hard. Didn't get back on the dissertation horse, but I'm about to today! I got 3/4ths of my goal done.
