1) Introduction

My thanks to Jan Mazuch, Olivier Breisacher, Aggelos Tzermiadianos, Francisco Retamoza, Miklos Orso, Hanon W. Russell, Dimitris Skyrianoglou, Anjo Anjewierden, Lars Magne Andreassen, Kevin Hyde, Frits Agterdenbos, Nicolas Umbach-Bascone, Pat Reynolds, and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The MTel Cup is living up to expectations with lots of fighting chess and the result is still very much in doubt with Gata Kamsky and Viswanathan Anand a point clear of Veselin Topalov and Peter Svidler. This week will also see the start of the Olympiad in Turin. The first round is on Sunday May 21st. But perhaps most important for the future of chess is the 77th FIDE Chess Congress at the finish of the event. In my view Bessel Kok is the most highly qualified man to put himself forward as FIDE President in the time I've been compiling TWIC. The Kirsan Ilyumzhinov presidency has been in effect a continuance of the Florencio Campomanes Presidency. That's been a period of 24 years, Ilyumzhinov has had 11 of those most of which has seen a decline in finance and prestige of the game. I don't believe its even a risk to make a change and I hope it happens, one would at least hope for a fair election, not a repetition of Moscow 1994, but as has been shown being in power in itself seems to grant the sitting President emense advantages in grace and favour. In fact I would have been a good deal more passionate about this but for the rather depressing nature of a number of the previous elections. You can only get your hopes up so many times. Whatever the result, how it is achieved will no doubt tell us a lot about the winner.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Mtel Masters

The Mtel Masters takes place in Sofia 9th (opening ceremony) - 21st (closing) May 2006.

The first five rounds of the MTel Cup saw 8 of the 15 games end decisively. The regulations whereby draws can only be agreed after three-fold repetition or in sterile positions certainly contributed to that. Gata Kamsky according to rating was supposed to score 3.5/10, instead he started with 3.5/4 and even after his loss to Topalov in round 5 (with black) he's in a strong position. Viswanathan Anand shares the lead with him. He started with 2/2 before losing a drawish looking ending to Kamsky, he recovered immediately in beating Ponomariov and he looks in excellent form. Veselin Topalov started slowly but his demolition of Kamsky in round 5 was impressive and no doubt he will be looking to have a say in the winner of the event. There is a rest day tomorrow before the second half starts.

There was news from the event. Their website reports: (Sofia, May 15, 2006) The manager of the World Champion Veselin Topalov – Silvio Danailov and the Minister of Sport of Azerbaijan Azad Rahimov agreed yesterday on a match for the world title to be held between Topalov and the Azerbaijanian Teimour Radjabov (ELO 2720). All conditions of the World Champion have been accepted and the two sides have signed a memorandum. The match will probably take place in April 2007 in Baku. The award fund will be $ 1,5 million, of which $ 1 million will be for Topalov. According to the rules of FIDE every chess player with ELO over 2700 can challenge the World Champion in a match for the title. Radjabov, currently number 13 in the FIDE ranking will be the next challenger for it if Topalov defends it in the match against Kramnik in September this year in the capital of Kalmykia - Elista.

The Geller Memorial takes place in Moscow 4th-12th May 2006. Farrukh Amonatov won with 8.5/12. It would be nice to get the games. I transliterated the names, some ratings didn't agree with my copy of the April FIDE rating list but I believe I have them correct.

13) LII Nacional Abierto Mexico City

The LII Nacional Abierto took place in Mexico City 11th-16th April 2006. Guiller Dominguez Aguilar edged out three other players on tie-break after they all finished on 7.5/9. Whilst processing the games I noticed that the Mexican FIDE rating list is a complete mess with the punctuation comma incorrectly coming after the first part of a double barreled name in many cases. News: Francisco Retamoza.

15th Kavala Open

The 15th Kavala Open takes place 4th-11th August 2006. There is one (traditional) Open Tournament, which is at the same time the Greek Championships. This year they decided to form two groups with very low elo players competing separately, so as not to create great elo differences and discourage high-ranked players from participating (and being paired with a 1400 player, when a game loss, or draw might mean an "elo catastrophy") on a swiss tournament such as this one. This separation of low elos and the bigger ones is done for the first time in Greece, previously all competed in one tournament. The 1st group players will be eligible for Greek Open titles in men's and women's competitions.

Entries must be sent by fax to + 30.2510.226871 or by e-mail : vliog@tee.gr, not later than July 24th and should include full name, ELO Rating, telephone and dates of arrival and departure. Telephone communication : Vassilis Liogkas : +30.2510.622370 and 6977474684

Vladimir Kramnik vs. Deep Fritz Match Announced

Vladimir Kramnik will play the ChessBase computer program Deep Fritz in a 6 game match 25th November - 5th December 2006 in the German’s Art and Exhibition Hall in Bonne. Kramnik stands to win a prize of $1 Million US for a win in the match doubling his starting fee.

Asked how he estimates his chances, Kramnik reacted cautiously: "Fritz examines millions of moves per second. It is extraordinarily difficult to play against such a calculating monster. Right from the start you are walking on a very narrow ridge, and you know that any inattentiveness will be your downfall. It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance." The WCC is being organized by Universal Event Promotion (UEP), in cooperation with the Art and Exhibition Hall.

Schedule: Game 1: Saturday 25.11.2006 16h Game 2: Monday 27.11.2006 16h Game 3: Wednesday 29.11.2006 16h Game 4: Friday 01.12.2006 16h Game 5: Sunday 03.12.2006 16h Game 6: Tuesday 05.12.2006 16h During the entire period of the match the Art and Exhibition Hall will offer a varied program.
