Corsie: "There is no time to waste" (original) (raw)

Canberra United captain Rachel Corsie says there is no time to waste when they get their season underway.

With the W-League season only 14 rounds long with only 12 games per team due to uneven numbers, there is no time to waste in the race for finals football.

Canberra have a tough challenge first up in reigning Champions Melbourne City on Sunday afternoon.

"That will be an exciting first game, and I’m really glad that’s our first game because it will be able to set a bar for us," Corsie said.

"Hopefully, it’s one where we show what we can do, and if it’s not we know where the benchmark is and we know what we need to do to get there.

"It is a short season, so there is no time to waste," she said.

The team in green have an interesting history with City as they halted their unbeaten streak with a 2-1 win in the sixth round of the 2016/17 season and sent City on a downward spiral.

The winning goalscorer that day Karly Roestbakken is one the only members alongside Nicki Flannery from that squad that will play this season.

However, in their last and only meeting in the 2017/18 season, Canberra fell to City 2-1 as Fishlock scored a double while Michelle Heyman, who is no longer in the Capital, also scored that day.

So it could be the game to watch this weekend.

It is also a new environment for the Scottish national team captain, having never played in Australia previously but she says her choice to come to the W-League was simple.

"I’m really close with a number of players, specifically who have been in Canberra," Corsie said.

"I think I understand it, the pace of it and the transition side of the game.

"A number of quality players have come to the league and more and more come every year because they understand that the level of the league is high and it’s growing all the time," she said.
