Shards of glass (original) (raw)

Okay, so I was unable to sleep last night. It was bad and I'm exhausted. That's all I'll say about that. To entertain myself, I made a list of the top ten shows that started out good, but took a turn south. In most cases they never recovered. Feel free to add anything I might have overlooked.

10. Obviously this spot belongs to Happy Days. Otherwise we'd never have such a cool phrase to describe these atrocities.

09. Married With Children. Any number of shows could fill this slot but MWC is the first to come to mind. Wayde and I call it the "adding a kid syndrome." Apparently some of these television folk think they can take characters we've watched and loved (or hated) and drop a kid out of the sky to liven things up. *shakes head* It never works. In season 7 we were tortured with Seven. Thankfully they realized quickly it wasn't working as the kid was dropped without explanation, but still, *shudder*

08. Roseanne. This was a great sitcom. We loved watching the struggles of a blue collar family because isn't that what most of us are or where we come from? Roseanne was consistently funny until she won the lottery. Seriously? Then it just got more and more outrageous every week, culminating in a series finale that I still can't make sense of.

07. Alias. Okay, Alias started out great. We loved watching Sydney kick some ass and those costumes! At some point this show was derailed by becoming too convoluted. Rambaldi what? This show started off great and then in trying to come up with too complex of a storyline, ending up being completely unwatchable.

06. 24. This show just makes me want to rant. Season one was great. What killed this show for me was the plot devices or lack thereof. How many times did someone get into someone's office/desk/computer accessing sensitive information? Don't you people ever lock your doors? You're a CTU ffs! Long about the 3rd or 4th time that was used as a plot device I stop watching. Throw in that ridiculous storyline with the cougar and the daughter (was her name Kim?) and I found the show to be unwatchable.

05. MASH Now, don't get me wrong. I'm a huge MASH fan. I own every ep. and have watched them countless times. Somehow one of the best characters on the show knocked it on it's ass. If I ever saw Alan Alda I would just HAVE to ask him, "What were you thinking?" He managed to take a comedy and all but turn it into a drama.

We

I liked it because they were these wacky hospital folk in these ridiculous situations that made me laugh to the point that I nearly pissed my pants. By the end it was so preachy and serious it was much like taking your medicine.

04. Friends These are the people that created the "Ross and Rachel" yo-yo effect" that has been and continues to be played out in numerous series. They weren't together, then they were, then they weren't, then they had a baby together, then they broke up again. I think by the end of this series we really were more interested in whether Joey ever got back on Days of our Lives than we cared whether Ross and Rachel ended up together. They did but he didn't according to his failed spin-off.

03. Smallville This was a great idea for a show, the early makings of Superman. Unfortunately it has suffered from a few problems. The "Ross and Rachel Yo-Yo Effect" is present. Plus, for a superhero we don't see nearly enough superhero-ing. And FFS, when is he going to fly? We're in the last season and I have yet to see Superman actually fly. Also, we all know he ends up with Lois Lane, so let's get on with it already!

02. Nip/Tuck *sigh* Ironically the episode that got the best ratings was the very episode that 'caused me to stop watching this series. The whole carver arc in season three had so many plot holes you could drive a big rig through them. The attempts to fill these holes only made it that much more ridiculous. All I can say is WTF? I've since heard that they moved their operation to L.A. I doubt that it helped.

01. The X-Files OMG, I don't even know where to begin. Obviously the whole "Ross and Rachel Yo-Yo Effect" is present throughout the series. I'm not even sure if there was a pay-off for that as I think I stopped watching and haven't seen the movie. This became the most convoluted show in history. It would take a doctorate in WTF to make sense of it. Way to ass-fuck a great concept, guys!
