Sandro Botticelli (ca. 1445–1510) is one of the most beloved artists of the Italian Renaissance, especially known for his paintings La Primavera and The Birth of Venus. A lesser-known aspect of his career is his work as a draftsman. His drawings are extraordinary, yet their rarity and unconventional style have kept them from being more widely recognized.
Botticelli Drawings is the first major book to examine this aspect of Botticelli’s work. It considers the foundational role that drawings played in Botticelli’s oeuvre in terms of his aesthetic, practice, and process—from his earliest recorded drawings made under the master Fra Filippo Lippi to the experimental and expressive designs for his final paintings. This catalogue reunites the majority of Botticelli’s surviving sheets, including several new attributions, discussed in detailed object entries. Essays further highlight the development of the artist’s draftsmanship, the broader Florentine culture in which he worked, and his design practices as revealed in new technical analyses of the underdrawings of some of his most renowned paintings.
In its focus on little-known and unknown material by one of the best-known artists in the canon, this is a landmark publication in the field of Renaissance art that will be an important reference for years to come.

With the appearance of a painting, the immediacy of a drawing, and the timeless matte finish of an ancient fresco, the pastel is one of the most versatile media used throughout history. Told throygh the selection of works spanning five centuries, this exhibition features and discusses works from the Museum collection by Rosalba Carriera, Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, John Altoon, Wayne Thiebaud and many others. This essay discusses the evolution of pastel through examples by Bassano, Leonardo da Vinci, Picasso, Francesco Clemente.

Part of a group of studies of earlier masters made probably c.1492–96, it exemplifies Michelangelo’s life-long admiration for the work of an artist who was regarded as one of the founders of modern painting.

Trained in the workshops of Luca Signorelli and Pietro Perugino, the Italian Renaissance painter,... more Trained in the workshops of Luca Signorelli and Pietro Perugino, the Italian Renaissance painter, draftsman, and architect Girolamo Genga (Urbino, 1476–1551) was one of the key figures for the diffusion of the Raphaellesque style in Central Italy. As the first court artist to the della Rovere ducal family of Pesaro and Urbino, Genga played a crucial role in every artistic aspect of the Duchy for over thirty years. His rare, yet powerful drawings record the infinite variety of his production including architectural solutions, inventions for paintings and decorations, and ornamental designs for applied arts. This talk will retrace his activity as a draftsman, explaining the function of some of his drawings with the help of the numerous letters he had exchanged with his patrons, such as the dukes Francesco Maria della Rovere (1490–1538), Eleonora Gonzaga (1493–1570), and Guidobaldo II della Rovere (1514–1574).

A recently acquired drawing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art confirms that the artist did, indeed, work as an architect, and sheds light on a building project in the Pantheon in Rome that has hitherto gone unnoticed.
