Methods: Four in-depth individual interviews and three focus group discussions were conducted with urologists (n=11), urology trainees (n=5), oncologists (n=3) and policy makers (n=1) in Malaysia in 2012-2013. A semi-structured interview guide was used to facilitate the interviews, which were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and checked. Thematic approach was used to analyze the data. Results: Challenges reported by HCPs in supporting patients in making decisions about prostate cancer treatment consisted of patient, social, healthcare professionals and health system factors. Patient-related challenges were: distrust of HCPs, difficulty in communicating information, preconceptions, attitudes to treatment, preparedness for decision making, viewing prostate cancer as taboo and fear of treatment complications, or side-effects. Social factors, such as influence of family or others, also posed a problem for HCPs seeking to support patients' decision-making. HCP-related challenges included: differences of opinion among HCPs, uncertainty about the best treatment option and lack of interdisciplinary cooperation. Healthcare system factors challenges included: lack of support staff, time constraints, treatment availability and treatment costs. HCPs suggested that delivery of care by multidisciplinary teams, and more use of audiovisual media, would help patients to make decisions. Conclusions: HCPs faced various challenges in supporting patients with prostate cancer in making decisions about treatment. Delivery of care by a supportive team in a specialist centre may improve the support patients receive in making decisions.

METHOD A descriptive, and cross-sectional design using Brook’s quality of nursing work life questionnaire (self-reported) and Porter’s anticipated turnover scale was implemented to collect data from 430 randomly selected Malaysian nurses in a teaching hospital’s medical, surgical, and special units. The data were analyzed using the structural equation model smart partial least squares and Statistical Package for Social Sciences software services. RESULTS The nurses had a moderate level of quality of work life and high level of turnover intention. Sex, number of children, and work wards/units had a moderating effect on turnover intention, after its interaction with quality of work life (p < .05). CONCLUSION The study findings highlighted the factors having a moderating effect on turnover intention after its interaction with quality of work life . This knowledge is beneficial for providing guidance to nursing leaders or healthcare departments in hospitals to improve nurses’ quality of work life and decrease their turnover intention. Addressing and understanding the demands and needs of nurses in the work environment and the family structure within a quality of work life could affect nurse’s retention, leading to a decrease in their turnover intention.

Being diagnosed with ACS causes poor quality of life, with patients always reporting of recurrent attacks and re-hospitalization. In addition, the current treatment which includes the prescription of statin to lower lipid levels is found to have several side effects on ACS patients. Those problems had guided the researcher to introduce a natural product, that is virgin coconut oil (VCO) as supplementary management of ACS. The aim of the study is to explore the participants' perception and feedback on 90 days of VCO consumption. Methods: Eighteen patients with ACS (5 women and 13 men) from 25 to 65 years of age and with a disease duration ranging from 3 to 22 years were interviewed through a face-to-face in-depth interview following a semi-structured interview guide. Data were analyzed using the Atlas.ti, content analysis method, and manual transcription. Results: VCO appeared in two themes, physiological and psychological effects. There were six subthemes of feedback covering decrease of appetite, easy to feel full/satiety, perceived reduction in body weight, feeling energetic, feeling active, and feeling healthy. Conclusions: VCO consumption performed differently in patients with ACS and was perceived differently by them. Majority of the participants agreed that VCO has positive effects on the physiologically and psychological. The results from this study may provide guidance for clinicians on important issues that need to be addressed such as a new health promotion strategy that involves natural products in reducing ACS incidence.

Despite of a plethora of researches into the various areas of disaster relief, there has been a little scholarly activity looking into the experiences of the medical volunteers worldwide and even less research on the experiences of the relief volunteers in Malaysia. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the effect of disaster relief works on volunteers in Malaysia. Methods This is a non-experimental cross-sectional design study, which was conducted using survey questionnaire to examine the incidence of burnout, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and the quality of life (QOL) among the disaster relief volunteers. And the study also examined the socio-demographic variables of the participants. In addition, the association between the sociodemographic variable and the preferred coping strategies was also investigated through self-reporting checklist. Results The findings of this study revealed that 90.9% volunteers (n = 312) experienced some levels of recurring stress throughout their lives, which led to burnout. Also, 96.8% (n = 332) of the participants were categorized as having at least some symptoms of PTSD. However, self-reporting QOL measurements indicated that the participants are, in general, satisfied with their lives. Significant associations between the incidence of burnout, incidence of PTSD and QOL were identified. Both positive coping measures and behavioral or avoidant coping measures were also identified. Furthermore, a number of socio-demographic factors were also seen to interact significantly with burnout, PTSD and QOL. Conclusion This study provides some insights into the psychological challenges of disaster relief volunteers in Malaysia, and this impact can last a long time after the volunteers return to their hometowns. Several recommendations including practice development, policy and research were discussed in the study.

Background: Job satisfaction is an important factor in healthcare settings. Strong empirical evidence supports a causal relationship between job satisfaction, patient safety and quality of care. Method: A convenient sample of 85 nurses from surgical, medical and critical care wards of a large hospital was recruited. Ten focus group discussions using a semi-structured interview guide were conducted. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using a thematic approach. Findings: The study identified three main themes that influenced nurses' job satisfaction and dissatisfaction: (1) spiritual feeling, (2) work environment factors, and (3) motivation. Helping and involvement in patient care contributed to the spiritual feeling reported to influence nurses' job satisfaction. For work environment factors, team cohesion, benefit and rewards, working conditions, lack of medical resources, unclear nurses' responsibilities, patient and doctor perceptions, poor leadership skills and discrimination at work played an important role in nurses' job dissatisfaction. For motivation factors, task requirement, professional development and lack of clinical autonomy contributed to nurses' job satisfaction. Conclusion and Implications for Nursing and Health Policy: Nurse managers should ensure a flexible practice environment with adequate staffing and resources with opportunities for nurses to participate in hospital's policies and governance. Policy makers should consider nurses' professional development needs, and implement initiatives to improve nurses' rewards and other benefits as they influence job satisfaction.

Grandparents raising grandchildren in New Zealand are entitled to the unsupported child benefit (... more Grandparents raising grandchildren in New Zealand are entitled to the unsupported child benefit (UCB) if they meet the conditions for eligibility. To access the support, they are required to attend the offices of Work and Income. In a large survey of such grandparents undertaken in 2016, participants articulated a wide range of qualitative comments around their experiences in accessing this important form of income support. While a proportion had positive experiences, most were critical of the operation of the offices. Between the policy of providing financial support for children unable to live with their own parents, and the practice of being a grandparent looking after such children, lies a complex set of systems of which grandparents were often extremely critical, for a range of reasons which are explored in this paper.

Results: The psychoeducational interventions showed a consistent improvement in many outcome measures. Most of the reviewed studies focused on outpatients and the method of delivering the psychoeducational interventions was mostly in lecture format. Conclusion: This systematic review of randomized controlled trial studies emphasizes the positive impact of psychoeducational interventions for patients diagnosed with schizophrenia concerning various outcome measures. The findings of this review have important implications for both nursing practice and research, as the information presented can be used by the administrators and stakeholders of mental health facilities to increase their understanding and awareness of the importance of integrating psychoeducational interventions in the routine care of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia.
