Despite their claim to the purity of their Islamic interpretation, Salafism is historically constructed. This article deals with the taḥqīq (editing) of Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn endeavored by a renowned Salafi scholar, Nāṣir al-Dīn Al-Albānī. It aims to demonstrate how Salafism has been constructed. In doing so, it tries to detail how Salafism has become increasingly mainstreamed, a process we might call "Salafization". This article argues that Al-Albānī did "Salafization" of Islamic intellectual tradition through taḥqīq. Using Gérard Genette's paratextual analysis, this article unveils practices and discourses surrounding Al-Albānī's textual editing. These practices and discourses were guided by his Salafi ideology. In his edition of Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn, there are three examples where Al-Albānī corrected popular Islamic understanding, including the relationship between intention (nīyah) and action (ʿamal), asmāʾ wa ṣifāt, and traditional religious practices and rituals.

Taking online Salafi rivalries as its point of departure, this contribution aims to further advance the discussion on the sectarianisation thesis offered by Hashemi and Postel, which argues that one of the key factors in religious sectarianism is not theology but authoritarianism. Unlike the thesis, this contribution argues that Salafi sectarianism is facilitated by Indonesia’s democratic atmosphere rather than by authoritarianism. However, this contribution agrees with the thesis that theology is not a determining aspect in Salafi sectarianism. Although framed in theological terms, Salafi rivalries are driven by competing to demonstrate their religious identity, authority, and ‘good’ citizenship.

After an account of how they emerged and developed in Indonesia, the relationship of the Madkhalīs with the state, which is based on a "fiqh of obedience", is analyzed. It is argued that, while this legal underpinning necessitates that they give total loyalty to the ruler (walī l-amr, or ūlū l-amr), the Indonesian Madkhalīs are unable to entirely follow this principle. The Madkhalīs have had to come to terms with the fact that Indonesia follows a democratic system, which, in fact, prevents the comprehensive accommodation of their Salafī principles. The resulting ambiguities prove difficult to solve. It is argued here that the negotiation between Madkhalī Salafīs and the Indonesian state is characterized by the constant efforts of the former to tackle those ambiguities.

It tries to answer several questions: to what extent MTA has interpreted the Qur'a> n, how it fits (or does not fit) with its ambitious claim that it does not offer any kind of Qur'a> nic interpretation, and how this interpretation demonstrates the development of MTA's thought in understanding the Qur'a> n. This article reaches the conclusion that, although MTA claims not to interpret the Qur'a> n, in fact it has made such a certain degree of interpretation of the Qur'a> n. Its puritan ideology seems to have played a considerable role in colouring its Qur'a> nic understanding. As a result, the claim that it does not interpret the Qur'a> n is not reliable and even tenden-tious.

A number of studies on Salafism in Indonesia have focused on modern media usage by Salafis. Virtually all of them deal with the role of the Internet in the Salafi movement (for instance,
