THOMASVILLE – A busy summer on the links culminates with two big events for Thomasville’s Mason Howell.
Howell will compete in the U.S. Open, one of the PGA’s four major championships every year, on June 18-21 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York. He’s also slated to defend his U.S. Amateur Championship on Aug. 10-16 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Penn.
Those tournaments followed the Charles Schwab Challenge on May 28-31 when Howell missed the cut despite shooting 1-over-par in two rounds. Howell also competed in the KLM Open in Amsterdam, Netherlands on June 4-7.
The busy travel season has been a lot for the Brookwood graduate, but Howell has stayed grounded with a strong support group.
“Traveling all the time, it’s a lot, especially at my age,” Howell said. “But I’ve got a good team around me and thank my parents and all the hard work they’ve done to help me get to this point.
“This is what I love doing. So, I’m going to try to play some good golf this summer before I go to college.”

Before Howell moves on to the University of Georgia, he’ll compete at the U.S. Amateur championship where he made a name for himself last year by becoming the third-youngest champion in the tournament’s history. He hopes to make even more history this time around.
“It’ll be wild, because there hasn’t been a defense at the U.S. Amateur in the last three or four years I think,” Howell said. “Everybody’s turned pro after they’ve won just because they’ve been seniors in college or something like that. It’ll be a really cool experience. I’m looking forward to it.”
