Sister Nivedita, Irish disciple of Swami Vivekananda was credited for the first national flag in 1904. This flag was designed using two colours yellow and red. The flag contained the symbol of ‘Vajra’ which signified strength and a white lotus depicts purity in the centre.”Bonde Matoram” Bengali word was written on it. This flag was also known as sister Nivedita’s flag.
After this flag in 1906, another flag was designed using three colours blue, yellow and red. This flag contained two symbols the sun and the star. It had “Vande Mataram” written on it. Another version of the same flag came into existence in the same year which was made up of orange, yellow and green colours. This flag was famous as “Lotus flag” or “Calcutta flag”.
Shyamji Krishna Varma, Madam Bhikaji Cama and Veer Savarkar had designed a new flag in 1907 with similar to a modified version of 1906. It was made up of three colours green, saffron and red. It also had “Vande Mataram” written on it. This flag was also known as Madam Bhikaji Cama flag or Berlin committee flag as this was the first time hosted in Germany.
In 1916 Lokmanya Tilak and Dr.Annie Besant designed a new flag. In this flag four colours were used white, green, blue and red in a striped manner, the five red and four green stripes represent Singh and Nair and white strip rep[resents seven stars of saptarishi.
Again in 1917, the leader of the Home Rule League Bal Ganga Dhar Tilak adopted a new flag. It consists of blue and red in color. It had a semi-circular moon and a star on the top fly end but this flag did not become popular. Mahatma Gandhi in 1921 designed the new flag containing three colours white green and red based on the flag of Ireland. White colour on the top represents truth. Green in the middle shows the earth and the Indian agriculture and red signified the spirit of freedom struggle.
In 1931 a new flag was designed by Pingali Venkayya. It has three colours, saffron at the top signified the strength, white in the middle depicts truth and purity and green at the bottom signified the earth and the Indian agriculture, fertility and faith and “Charkha” in the centre of the flag. This was adopted by the Indian constituent assembly on 22nd July 1947 but “Charkha” was replaced by “Wheel”. The Chakra in Navy blue to show the Chakra of law in the Sarnath Lion Capital. This Chakra is known as “Ashok Chakra”. It consists of 24 spokes which shows that there is life in movement and death in stagnation. The Indian flag can only be made up of Khadi.
