The themes of the study are: the transformation of ritual data within the philosophical discourse of the Daodejing, the use of the he/huo 和 (harmony) and tong 同 (confusion) doublet, themselves emerging from Warring States ritual elaborations. Moreover, we analyze the question of the Legalist influence in the text and finally the question of the geographic transmission of the Daodejing during its editorial process. Some of those elements indicate that the Qin was one of the last “stations” through which the text travelled.

It revolves around two possible attitudes vis-à-vis the universe (here defined as “what is given”): positive entanglement, where “nature” is not only the source of literary images but also the ultimate criteria of the literary judgment and the absolute rejection of nature as precisely what is given i.e. what dares to impose its own existence upon the human mind. Finely, we suggest, through a text of Walter Benjamin, a median way between those two attitudes, based on his concept of the language of the things.

It collides with the mindset of a lot of ancient civilizations that inscribed their being into the circle of immutability. In this article, we explore through archaic Chinese ritual references, some aspects of the dialectics between change and immutability, in a political context.

It also makes use of other (mythical, Indian, Viking) sources to examine in particular some aspects of the (at time cannibalistic) father-son relationship.

This character’s signification is wider than the English “ritual;” it designates the implementation of ceremonies, from ancestral sacrifices to the proper conduct during the preparation of warfare. It is also the pivot of Confucian ideology, the principle ordering social and political hierarchies. The two meanings of this character are illustrated notably in three ritual compendia (or canons) which were redacted progressively during the Han dynasty.
