Back in 2009, Constantin Film and Unique Features acquired the rights to Cassandra Clare’s international bestselling The Mortal Instruments series. While it’s been a long and arduous process from book to screen, one that Clare has been active in, the film picked up speed in 2012. Sony Pictures/Screen Gems signed on to distribute the film.

Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Robert Sheehan, Kevin Zegers, Jemima West, Godfrey Gao, Lena Headey and Jonathan Rhys Meyers lead the cast for the first novel City of Bones. Filming begins in August 2012, in Toronto and New York City and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is set for an August 23, 2013 theatrical release.

THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES is a Constantin Film and Unique Features Production, directed by Harald Zwart (THE KARATE KID) from a screenplay by Jessica Postigo Paquette and I. Marlene King (Pretty Little Liars). Robert Kulzer is producing for Constantin Film alongside Don Carmody. Executive Producers are Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne for Unique Features and Martin Moszkowicz for Constantin Film. Principal photography will begin August 20, 2012 in Toronto, Ontario. Screen Gems will release in the United States August 23, 2013. Mister Smith Entertainment will handle foreign distribution for Constantin Film. Sony Pictures Consumer Products has acquired the licensing rights. The film is a Canada-Germany Co-Production.

Official Synopsis:

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder—much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It’s hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing—not even a smear of blood—to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary’s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It’s also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace’s world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know…
