As the days get shorter and the air gets a little crisper, it's time to embrace the spirit of fall at UC San Diego! From spooky Halloween festivities to colorful Dia de los Muertos celebrations, there’s something for everyone to enjoy this season on campus.
Get ready for treats, tricks and vibrant traditions with these six exciting happenings:
Halloween Aglow
Halloween Aglow is coming back to Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography for two nights of Halloween fun with an educational twist. On Oct. 25-26 from 6-8 p.m., dive into the mysteries of the ocean after dark in a fun family-friendly atmosphere. Attendees can enjoy live music, a costume contest and trick-or-treat stations, plus get the inside scoop on some of the weird and wonderful research being done at Scripps. Tickets can be purchased on the aquarium’s website.
Scream-Athon!
On Oct. 29, celebrate the spooky season by heading to Price Center Theater for the final installment of Scream-Athon! Every Tuesday this month, University Centers has been screening the iconic horror slasher Scream movies in order. Students can catch Scream (2022) for free with their student ID; doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Plus, movie fans who have attended three showings can receive a special sticker, and those who have attended all five can get a tote bag. This series is held in collaboration with the student organization Triton Film Society.
Halloween Costume Contest
This year, UC San Diego's annual Halloween Costume Contest is going digital! All students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to swing by the UC San Diego Bookstore on Oct. 31 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to snap a photo in their costume. The next day, all entries will be posted on the bookstore’s Facebook and Instagram, where the campus community will vote for the most boo-tiful costume! There will be no categories this year—just one "Best Costume" to rule them all. Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, based on the most votes. Voting will be open all weekend and the winners will be announced on Monday, Nov. 4.
Día de los Muertos Community Altar, Teach-in and Performance
Join the university’s celebration of Latinx Heritage Month with a special Día de los Muertos event at the Price Center Triton Steps. This two-part celebration on Oct. 31 honors the rich tradition of remembering and honoring loved ones who have passed. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., all are welcome to contribute to the community altar, or ofrenda, by adding photos and mementos of those they wish to pay respect to. From 5:30 to 7 p.m., enjoy a teach-in and live performances by local artists and dancers, highlighting the significance of this holiday.
Witch, Please! The Controversial Feminisms of Witchcraft
As Halloween draws near, visit the Women’s Center on Oct. 25 for Witch, Please! The Controversial Feminisms of Witchcraft. Starting at noon, the seminar will delve into the history of witchcraft and examine how the witch trope has been used to control women's bodies and expressions. Led by Nikita Harwich '27, this event will explore the construction of the witch and how it has been used to police the expressions and freedoms of women and gender-marginalized people for centuries.
