17 (original) (raw)
Steel Giant One Seven (大鉄人17, Daitetsujin Wan-Sebun), or simply 17 (17, Wan-Sebun), is a robot and is one of Brain's numerous creations. Unlike Brain's other robots, Daitetsujin 17 revolted against him, and was left deactivated by Brain before found by Saburo . Saburo can control and transform the robot into his mechanized form by shouting "Daitetsujin One Seven!" while wearing the helmet, via voice command. In robot mode, Daitetsujin 17 can fire both of its fists as well as missiles stored in its chest. While in his base mode, he can store vehicles within his feet.
Biography[]
17 is the 17th robot created by Brain, and the first to utilize the "Autodiode 17", a component meant to create a free-roaming alter ego for Brain. Like his creator, 17 is self assured, calculating, and bears "super-productivity" as result of his Autodiode. Upon meeting Saburo Minami, however, he rebels against Brain and becomes an ally of humanity.
After numerous battles between 17 and Brain, the Science Research Institute builds the human-allied computer "Big Angel" to replace Brain. According to Big Angel's calculations, in order to defeat Brain, 17 must deliver a powerful blow that even his super-production ability cannot sustain, and that Saburo is the key. In order to avoid the influence of the "Brain Area", which controls computers within 2 kilometers of Brain, 17 devises a plan of his own, utilizing his reprogramming by Saburo. In a final act of compassion, 17 forces Saburo to escape by having a nearby robot push him away from the oncoming explosion, thereby sacrificing himself. Brain explodes along with 17, and the battle is over.
Abilities[]
His super production ability utilizes a small, built-in work robot with the ability to perform repairs and improve his skill set. Mecha such as submachines are also manufactured using 17’s internal production capabilities. In addition to these submachines, he can also create cakes, juices, and ice cream, which are later given to various human guests. Additionally, a control room could be found internally, which was later used to accommodate guests within 17. A cockpit was eventually installed within the head, which Saburo uses to pilot 17 when the robot ceases function.
Initially, communication required a special EEG helmet that 17 manufactured inside his body. This helmet can only be used by Saburo. 17 cannot alter its design, or express intentions other than "yes" and "no" with the flashing eye pattern the helmet emits. (“Yes” if it emits a blue light, and “No” if it is red). Beginning episode 19, 17 gains the ability to converse fluently with individuals other than Saburo.

Techniques[]
17's special move is a Grabitone (グラビトーン) attack that compresses and pulverizes the target with tremendous force, by opening the launch port inside the shutter on the abdomen, and shooting it like a fireball. When fired, his eyes glow red, and he performs an accompanying action; upon uttering the phrase "Grabitone!", he fires a projectile at the enemy. According to Brain, once Grabitone is fired, it takes 15 hours for further 'graviton' accumulation. Therefore, two attack robots are prepared for a double attack, prior to self improvement leading to a 13 hour recharge period.
17 raises his right hand, signaling he is going to fire the Grabitone
His eyes changing color
His eyes glow red
17 lowers both hands (since episode 19 he also shouts "Grabitone" before lowing his hands)
The launch port opens
Notes[]
- The number 17 is said as"One Seven," not "Seventeen."
- His voice actor, Kyoji Kobayashi, is also the narrator of the series.
- The most noticeable sign 17 is about to shoot the Grabitone is raising his right hand to the left, which helps the Red Muffler Corps take cover themselves.
- The concept of 'graviton' appears frequently in the series, but has no definite explanation or parameters.
