claiming surgery as a medical expense for taxes | [Sep. 1st, 2013|12:37 pm]Trans Canada |
---|---|
Hey folks,I had top surgery in April of 2012 with Hugh McLean in Mississauga. (Great experience, and I'm quite happy with my results!) I claimed it as a medical expense when I filed my taxes, and now my medical expenses are being reviewed. Basically, I'm being audited, and have to provide documentation. I have receipts, so supplying those is no problem. I'm not sure what other documentation they might be looking for. All I have other than the receipt from the clinic is a copy of the official form to change my sex on my birth certificate (for Nova Scotia, where I was born), signed by the surgeon and notarized.Has anyone else claimed surgery as a medical expense on their taxes and then had it questioned? What documentation did you have to provide, and what was the outcome? In case any of this is relevant, I live in British Columbia. Top surgery is covered in BC, but I was initially turned down by the assessors on the basis of unrelated mental health stuff (PTSD relating to sexual abuse when I was an adolescent). After getting strung along for a while, I found out I had no chance of being approved for another year, and would then be at the bottom of the lengthy waitlist whenever I did finally get approved. I also wasn't feeling great about what I'd heard about the BC surgeon's fat phobia. Around this time, my mother inherited some money after my grandmother died, and she offered to give me a portion of the inheritance money to pay for surgery with Dr McLean. Thanks in advance for any information you may be able to give me! | |

manitoba services update for everyone who needs a diagnosis and/or a letter | [Dec. 4th, 2012|12:52 pm]Trans Canada |

Just thought I'd pass on the news that Dr. Robin Westmacott is now doing assessments at the Wolseley Elm with Dr. Henderson. Apparently Dr. Westmacott hasn't been doing trans-specific care for very long, but reports so far suggest that she's open-minded, compassionate, and consistent in her approach. If you'd like to give a first-hand account of a session with her, feel free to post it here or message me about it if you'd prefer it not to be connected with your account. | |

Questionnarie about the family experience | [Nov. 20th, 2012|07:19 pm]Trans Canada |

[**mood** |hopeful]Hi Everyone,My name is Rachel and I am a grade 12 student at a high school in Ontario, Canada. As part of my “Individuals and Families in a Diverse Society” course, I chose to focus my independent study project on the diverse family experiences of transgender people. I have composed the following questionnaire as a means of collecting direct input from non cisgendered people about the unique challenges and experiences that they may face within their families. This is an anonymous questionnaire so you will not be required to disclose any names unless you wish to and your answers will not be shared with anyone other than myself and my teacher. You must be at least high school aged to complete this survey. If there are any questions that you feel uncomfortable answering, are unsure about how to answer or if the question doesn’t apply to you, simply place an “NA” in the space below the question. If you are interested in filling out the questionnaire, please click on this link https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NwBohuaLA7C0DetWxCPjkHR0knO6KQzODK1aSIRAGTM/edit and then send your answers to me via email to: R_T_world@hotmail.com with the right number in front of each answer so I know which question to match it up with.Thank you so much for helping me out! | |

Canada Border Services Agency policy change | [Dec. 19th, 2011|01:04 pm]Trans Canada |
---|---|
CBSA has updated their policy concerning trans* and intersex people pulled aside for strip searches. Maybe everyone else knows about this already, but it was news to me.From http://www.lfpress.com/news/canada/2011/12/07/19090066.htmlCanada Border Services Agency issued a directive in August telling officers that transsexual and intersexed individuals can choose whether a man or a woman will search them. Or they can opt for a "split search," notes the directive, which involves two sets of border services officers - one all male, the other all female."The first set completes the search of the upper body while leaving the lower body clothed," says the directive. "The individual is then permitted to fully dress, and is turned over to a second set of BSOs of the opposite sex to conduct the search of the lower body, while the upper body remains clothed." | |

Where to start looking? | [Sep. 26th, 2011|10:32 pm]Trans Canada |

[**mood** |lonely]I live in Saskatchewan and I'm looking for advice on how to find a trans friendly doc. I haven't found any websites or resources of any kind for the lgbt community in the province, or at least not any that have been updated in the last decade. I'm still in the very beginning stages of gathering information and looking at my options. I'd like professional medical advice, but I have no idea where to look for a doc with experience in this province. Do any exist? | |
