What would the engraver hope to accomplish? And what can this tell us about the engraver's society? The study of mason's marks1 is particularly hazardous inasmuch as we are unlikely ever to be able to examine all the sides of the large blocks embedded in walls and foundations. Traces of painted marks suggest that a great deal of the evidence has disappeared. Thus we are relying on the incompletely examined portion of surviving material for our analyses and risk committing even more than the usual number of errors based on negative evidence. The focus here is on the masons who created the walls and marks and on the context of their labors.2

The Classical Review, 1973

Here the term 'essive', useful for describing verbs equivalent in meaning to expressions ... more Here the term 'essive', useful for describing verbs equivalent in meaning to expressions consisting of esse (fieri) with predicate, is tacitly extended to include the notion of 'acting, behaving, functioning as' in the case of, for instance supplicate, auspicari. In the history of Latin the linguistic and stylistic aspects are constantly interwoven. It is therefore appropriate that Mignot draws attention here and there to points of style: the predilection of poets for verbs of the second conjugation derived from adjectives, the contrast between the mainly poetic character of denominatives in -scere in Republican literature and their assumption of a well-marked technical character in the post-Augustan period, and the concentration of denominatives and denominative frequentatives in -itare in the earliest and latest of the six periods covered by his book, with the suggestion that they had too expressive and popular a character for free acceptance in more classical Latinity. The work is not entirely free from misprints and other errors of inadvertence. Some are not difficult to detect, e.g. ex insulsum (sic) salsumfeci in the quotation of Plautus, Rud. 517 (p. 305); others require a moment's thought: for example, footnotes (2) and (3) on p. 281 appear to give better sense if 'factitif' is read for 'frequentatif' in the former and 'vocalisme' for 'vocabulaire' in the latter. These notes may serve to indicate, but are far from exhausting, the scope and content of Mignot's book. In a work intended to be comprehensive much that is not new has to be reported. It is therefore to be welcomed that in dealing with earlier material and views Mignot maintains a critical and unprejudiced attitude. His own contribution is, in the main, to increase our detailed knowledge of the unceasing, yet constantly fluctuating, processes of loss and gain which constitute an important part of the history of the Latin vocabulary.
