Data were obtained from 400 respondents in four cities: Surabaya, Malang, Kediri and Sidoarjo. We found that the Indonesian urban middle classes in East Java tend to consider the signifying or symbolic value and social pressure as important deciding factors when buying a particular consumer product, rather than its use value and exchange value. Moreover, global-referenced lifestyles and consumption behaviour have influenced the preferences of the Indonesian urban middle class in choosing consumer products. Generally, the global consumerist lifestyle and trends cause them to become more oriented towards foreign products. For some products, especially high-tech products, the Indonesian urban middle class in East Java seemed to prefer branded and imported products over domestic ones. However, for some other non-high-tech products, we found that the majority of respondents increasingly perceived that there was little difference between consuming domestic or branded imported products. Unlike the previous generation, contemporary Indonesian urban middle-class individuals would now purchase or consume domestic or local products, as long as the products met their demand, suited their purchasing power, and had the same quality as foreign-imported products.

Although illegal migrant workers have become aware of their weak bargaining positions because of their illegal immigration status, the desire to earn higher income often leads them to seek employment in neighboring countries. The substantial wage disparities, the difficulty of finding jobs in their hometown, and the need to get economic and social capitals are some primary factors that encourage them to become illegal migrant workers. By using a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods, this study finds that Indonesian illegal migrant workers often face threats and adverse treatments abroad. Moreover, the bargaining position of the Indonesian illegal migrant workers is generally weak. The Indonesian illegal migrant workers often experience verbal, psychological, and physical abuse from their brokers, employers, and local immigration officers. The Indonesian illegal migrant workers survive from the hardship overseas as they take advantage of the social cohesion among their fellow illegal migrant workers to deal with the life pressures and limitations abroad.

By utilizing several key theoretical ideas including Durkheim‟s Sacred and Profane, Bell‟s ritual and ritualization, and Whitehouse‟s modes of religiosity, this paper corroborates the previous findings in the religious and sociological studies that the body plays an important role in the construction of identity, including religious identity such as Muslim identity. This embodied or ritualized body, with its characteristics of formality, fixity, and repetition, constructs, upholds, enforces and maintains Muslim identity through its rituals of salat, sawm, and hajj

The purpose of this study was to find out the profile of the perpetrators and victims of incest, the incest relationship that occurred and the responses from the families to the known incestuous relationship in Indonesia. Data were obtained from 137 cases of incest for seven years (2010–2017) reported by a media outlet in Indonesia as well as from in-depth interviews with 14 informants in four cities in East Java, Indonesia, namely Kediri, Nganjuk, Gresik, and Surabaya. The main finding of this study is that most incest victims in Indonesia were young women aged 10–17 years (75%) and most incest perpetrators are their biological fathers or stepfathers (77%) who are on average >50 years old (31%). The purpose of this study is to find out how “thought communities” and “sociomental frameworks” play an important role in shaping the attitudes and actions of religious intolerance among youths in Indonesia. The data in this study were obtained by surveying 500 high school students and in-depth interviews of 50 high school students in five regions in East Java, namely, Surabaya, Malang, Kediri, Pamekasan, and Pasuruan. By utilizing the cognitive sociology approach, this study found that the attitudes and actions of religious intolerance among youths in Indonesia are strongly influenced by the sociomental framework and “thought community” of the dominant majority of the immediate environment. Furthermore, the attitudes and actions of religious intolerance among youths in Indonesia are commonly preceded by a hatred of “those who are different,” although not all cases are like that. The findings of this study corroborated prior studies that in unequal inter-ethnic relations, the ethnic minority...

This study, which was conducted in 5 cities / districts in East Java with 500 students, found that at the construction level, most students realized that diversity and tolerance become basic prerequisites for the pluralistic life of the nation and state in Indonesia. However, most students generally consider their own safety rather than interfere in persecution that they witness at school. Most students stated they would defend if there were friends becoming victims of persecution or acts of intolerance. However, in reality, they generally still weigh various factors and implications of their actions. In terms of numbers, act of intolerance committed by students may not be too great. However, around 20-25% of students who are intolerant and sympathetic to the radicalism movement ar...
