How the East London Christian Mission became The Salvation Army By the middle of the nineteenth century the fire that had burned so brightly through the great awakening with the preaching of Whitefield and Wesley a century earlier had begun to die down somewhat and the methodist movement itself had become a rather respectable denomination.
William Booth was an itinerant lay preacher with the methodist "new connection" hailing from Nottingham. When he arrived in London's east end he was staggered by the poverty he encountered among the working classes, he resigned the New Connection to form an evangelistic society soon to become The East London Christian Mission.
His first public speaking engagement as the mission's evangelist was outside "The Blind Beggar" pub in Whitechapel rd, he threw his hat upon the pavement outside the pub, a notorious hive of gambling and prostitution along with every other kind of vice, and he started preaching to it the love of Christ.
Among the missiles hurled by the patrons within at his loving invitation to accept Christ and be saved were human waste, offal and at least one live cat, but several persons got saved and subsequently they erected a tent in a field opposite and began a work which with God's blessing began to grow and prosper under Booth's leadership.
One freezing November night Booth was walking over London bridge with his son Bramwell and peering over the bridge he noticed what seemed to be rows of cardboard boxes stuffed with nothing but newspaper he enquired what they were "why father...came the reply...those boxes are used by homeless men and women to sleep in." William Booth was distraught, he went home in an agony of grief that such a thing could be, he paced the floor back and forth pulling on his beard "and you knew, you knew but you did nothing."
From that time forward the E.L.C.M. started to buy and rent disused warehouses and such buildings and the first hostels began, on the wall of each hostel were written these words "NO MAN NEED STEAL OR TO STARVE OR TO SLEEP OUT AT NIGHT OR TO BEG OR TO COMMIT SUICIDE-WE WILL HELP YOU.
In May 1987 Booth called upon his closest friend and ally George Railton and Bramwell to review with him the annual statement for the E.L.C.M. written at the top of the document were the words "the christian mission is a voluntary association." Bramwell objected strongly to the wording saying "I am no volunteer I am oblidged to serve."William Booth took his pen and put a stroke through the offending words writing in their stead "A Salvation Army."

We only had eight kids at Bible School last night.
:(
It makes me sad. I want kids to know Jesus and somehow we aren't getting the message to them. I feel like it is the church body's calling to bring in people and share Jesus with them, and therefore I'm partly responsible for the fact that there aren't kids there. I don't really know what to do though. Teachers in the public schools have trouble getting kids to come to school and state law requires kids to go there. If they have trouble then of course we'll have trouble... It just makes me sad that Bible School isn't valued by people enough to make them want to be part of it, or make their kids be part of it.
Please people! Send your kids to church so they can learn about Jesus!
There were no kids in the 1st and 2nd grade class I was supposed to teach, and I had been really excited about getting to know the kids and having the opportunity to tell them point blank about Jesus. It's so nice to be able to do that, since in the schools we have to do it in like a sideways, almost-sneaky manner. And Bible School used to be our big rally for getting kids to come to Sunday School and character building activities and beginner's band... Why don't people value these things? It makes me sad because I value them and I want other people to enjoy and participate in them too, but their lack of interest basically tells me that the things I value aren't worth valuing in their opinion.
I hope my Sunday School class has more than two students this year! I've been telling Noah to bring his friends...
Ironically, today divisional leaders came and recognized the success of our Sunday School.

The world for God! Do you hear the Battle Cry?
The world for God! The world for God!
There's nothing else will meet the hunger of my soul.
I see forsaken children, I see the tears that fall
from women's eyes, once merry, now never laugh at all;
I see the sins and sorrows of those who sit in darkness;
I see in lands far distant, the hungry and oppressed.
But behold! On a hill, Calvary! Calvary!
The world for God! The world for God! I give my heart! I'll do my part! The world for God! The world for God! I give my heart! I'll do my part!
The world for God! The world for God!
I call to arms the soldiers of the blood and fire:
Go with the Holy Bible. Its words are peace and life
To multitudes who struggle with crime and want and strife.
Go with your songs of mercy, show Christ in loving kindness,
Make known the sufferings of the cross, the sacrifice of God;
For behold! On a hill, Calvary! Calvary!
The world for God! The world for God!
For this, dear Lord, give to my soul consuming fire.
Give fire that makes men heroes, turns weakness into might,
the fire that gives the courage to suffer for the fight,
the fire that changes fearing to pentecostal daring,
the fire that makes me willing for Christ to live or die;
For behold! On a hill, Calvary! Calvary!

We need to pull together I know that there is a lot going on lately in The Salvation Army. So, we need to stand together. My officers had the call to head to Mississippi...but they are about to leave on there education trip (possibly...long story), so they are on hold for that. I do have othere friends down there from Louisville. My prayers are with them!
So, what is going on in your corps in regards to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina? How is it affecting you?
Maybe you just want to vent or praise about something else going on in your life or corps...if so do it. Let's get to know each other better and be thankful that we can!

Theological Traditions Quiz This is an interesting quiz I took yesterday that deals with what "Christian Tradition" you fit into according to your personal beliefs. There is no analysis, other than ranking your scores.
The author does admit that the questions are often oversimplifications, so the results may be skewed somewhat for that reason.
Below are my scores:
Your results for Christian Traditions Selector
Rank Item Percent
1: Anabaptist (Mennonite/Quaker etc.) (100%)
2: Eastern Orthodox (96%)
3: Pentecostal/Charismatic/Assemblies of God (84%)
4: Methodist/Wesleyan/Nazarene (81%)
5: Anglican/Episcopal/Church of England (72%)
6: Congregational/United Church of Christ (72%)
7: Baptist (non-Calvinistic)/Plymouth Brethren/Fundamentalist (68%)
8: Seventh-Day Adventist (68%)
9: Baptist (Reformed/Particular/Calvinistic) (67%)
10: Lutheran (67%)
11: Roman Catholic (65%)
12: Church of Christ/Campbellite (60%)
13: Presbyterian/Reformed (55%)
I think its interesting that I scored highest as a Anabaptist, followed closely by Eastern Orthodox
As an Officer in The Salvation Army (in Everday Life), I'm really interested to see how I scored so low (fourth!) as a Methodist/Wesleyan/Nazarene, seeing as The Salvation Army was founded by a former Wesleyan Methodist minister.
Maybe this will spark some discussion here. This is an awful quiet community!

poll Salvation Army Poll!
1. What Salvation Army quirks do you like? Name as many as you can! (when I think of an example I'll post it)
2. Do you think S.A. generals (current & past) are cool? Who's your favorite?
3. Do you like me? Check yes or no.
yes no
Ha ha ha! Ok, ok, #3 is just a joke. I had to put it in because this poll reminds me of those notes people sent each other in elementary/middle school (or for some of us, high school/college lol!). Thanks for your time!

Don't Worry We all know this one,but it is worth saying over.
Don't worry about things. It does'nt do a bit of good
and some research suggests that it is actually harmful.
When we get nervous about something;don't know whats going to
happen next, or just want to be in control of our lives, its good to
remember who is in control. When we realize that we are worrying it should
be an instant reminder to pray to the Lord for help.
You know that in Gods word he tells us:
Come to me all who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest.
Thank you Lord...You are soo good.

"Open Sundays," the church reciprocated with its own message: "We are open on Sundays, too."

Tha Army is a changing From what I hear there are some major changes coming down from the London International headquarters. In the next bit of time The Salvation Army might not be how we remember it as a child. I wonder what will happen.
From what I heard due to the politically un correct word WAR it shall be removed from The Salvation Army terminology.
The Articles of War will be changed to Soldiers Covenant which is a stronger bind.
I wonder what will happen to our War Cry & the battle songs what about the songs with the word War in them.
I believe we as Christians are called to put on the full armor of God & fight the good fight. Fight the war on good verses evil. I don't think we should pick up an actual sword & chop off ones head or kill a person. Just pick up the "sword" ya know the BIBLe and touch ones heart & soul.
If we give up our terminology that shows we are soldiers will we do away with the ranks which they seem to make everyone Captains when they graduate training now anyways. Is that being phased out also. Will the uniforms no longer be in existence due to the rank of officers being associated with the military & wars.
I know some people & Countries might go a little extreme on the War cry and Articles of war as all some of the countries The Army is in is about wars. I just wonder what's going on.
I wish I could see the e-mail list of Changes. I hope the Army stays true to the Bible in all these changes. I think we need to pray for the General & those making these decisions. I also think we need to pray that officers and soldiers will be willing to stand up and give their points of view from a Biblical stand point if it gets out of line.
I was so shocked I couldn't remember everything that was said. These are my thoughts. have any of you heard about any other changes.
I do know that GOD is still relevant in today's world. His word holds true through out time.

Church is so good at the moment. I am looking forward to sunday nights again, and gee that's good. The team has put a bit of work into it, revamped it a bit, so it's just really good now. We get guest performers and speakers now, and they do things that are just a bit different, like finishing early and having bbqs and that sort of thing. Gone are the days of the brass band playing, followed by the worship band and then sermon and then worship band 8 times and then a bright band number and benediction and finish. IT's just really good, I'm really proud of my church. They were losing a lot of people, we got down to averaging maybe 70-100 people a night, but the numbers are lifting now and it's slowly getting harder and harder to find a seat again.
