In this technique, students are divided into small groups and are asked to complete a structured review of assigned material. The swarm aspect of this technique is inspired by swarm intelligence, a natural phenomenon in which individuals collaborate to achieve tasks as a group that could not be completed by an individual working alone. TTCL-Swarm is implemented in an Introduction to Operations Management class which is divided into large lecture sections with small accompanying lab sections. The instructor's experience with TTCL-Swarm and recommended modifications are discussed.

A hybrid approach is developed and has been successfully implemented at our university. The course provides an alternative to the standard, large section lecture model of content delivery that has been popular for years on large college campuses. In particular, the course design blends lecture, small class attention and practical hands-on problem solving to provide a more effective learning environment.

The novelty of the topics, quantitative rigor and difficult concepts makes this course challenging for students. To combat this problem, we implemented a unique cooperative learning program over two different semesters at an AACSB accredited business school. Although the cooperative learning program was voluntary, 41% of the students participated in the program. Exam scores were measured for students who participated in weekly learning groups versus those students who did not participate. The findings show that students who participated in the weekly cooperative learning groups scored significantly better than non-attended students on all three exam across two semesters. The positive outcomes are numerous including higher pass rates for the course, students learning to work in groups and fewer students visiting office hours during the semester.
