As recent political developments challenge the notion of liberalism in the west (including its approach in regard to environmental challenges), Rawls' theory offers a way of rediscovering and strengthening liberal ideas, as it defines moral principles for establishing political institutions which specify how social goods and basic rights should be distributed. This, on the other hand, can have far-reaching implications in terms of how to handle climate-related problems on an institutional level. First of all, I shall explain what exactly the field of environmental ethics is about and how it relates to the idea of sustainable development. Afterwards, I will give an overview of Rawls'
theory and take a closer look at how he justifies political principles that shape the institutions of a society. More precisely, I will present his notion of the “original position” and the idea behind the “principles of justice”. Then, I will bring both parts together by analyzing to what extent Rawls' theory can represent the interests of non-human beings and how it can justify environmental principles that are in accordance with sustainable development goals.
