Both motors have been controlled in brushless DC motor mode in accordance with the rotor positions. Detailed study has been carried out by means of mathematical modeling and computer simulation for the respective transient and steady-state regimes at various load and work conditions. The research carried out as well as the results obtained can be used in the design, optimization and tuning of such types of drive systems. They could be also applied in the teaching process.

It is developed in two parts: theoretic analysis of the operation modes; synthesis, simulation and implementation aspects of the control system based on the software ISE Design Suite of Xilinx. Three control modes are provided, namely: normal traffic; operation in increased traffic; emergency traffic. Based on the formulated regimes, a control program has been synthesized and a detailed simulation using Verilog HDL has been done. This study and the results obtained can be used in the design and practical application of different traffic light systems.

Two additional controlled axes are applied, namely a table rotation (axis 4) and tilting of this table (axis 5). The machines under consideration are attributed to those with multi-coordinate electric driving systems. The main requirements for the drive characteristics of each coordinate axis are formulated. A number of models for computer simulation with various electric drives have been developed aiming at studying their dynamic and static regimes for the respective control algorithms. The experimental research carried out confirms good performance of the electric drives applied. The results of this study can be used in the design and set up of such multi-coordinate driving systems.

On this basis, a methodology for choice of the spindle drives is offered. The algorithm takes into account the specific features of the technological processes, the treated materials, the tools used and their wear, as well as the mechanical gear types. The experimental studies of the implemented electric drives for the spindle are presented and discussed. The research carried out and the results obtained can be used in the development of such drives for the studied class of machine tools.

Based on formulated requirements to these machines, a simplified block diagram of the drive system is composed. The machining modes and cutting forces are determined by the machining parameters. The basic parameters in turning are the cutting speed, feed and cutting depth. They affect the accuracy, roughness, speed and performance of the whole machine. The methodology applied herein includes a theoretical approach and a detailed experimental study. The practical application is demonstrated with machining of some workpieces. Based on the developed geometric model the machining parameters and the tool life for different materials are determined. Some machining operations are shown and discussed. The energy consumption of the drive system in the studied machines is also analyzed. The research held and the results obtained can be used in the application of such lathe machines with computer numerical control.

An appropriate wireless system has been developed and de- scribed. The structure presented allows measurement of all necessary parameters namely power converter voltage, arma- ture current, angular speed, motor torque, temperature and vibrations. It uses ZigBee standard for remote data transmis- sion combined with Internet connectivity for assessment of the Global network-collected information. Detailed experi- mental study confirms the good performance of this wireless monitoring system. The research carried out as well as the results obtained can be used in design and set up of such types of remote wireless systems.

The basic requirements to the drives of each coordinate axis and the spindle are presented. Using the analysis carried out, a practical approach to appropriate selection of the respective drives is applied. The methodology offered is illustrated with some examples for choice of drives with direct current and alternating current motors. Some experimental research of cases with different feed and spindle drives are described and discussed. Better capabilities of the modernized machines for processing more complex workpieces are achieved, at a relatively low price. This research and the obtained results can be used in the design and tuning of electric drives for the considered type of machines with numerical program control.
