Comfiest Shops & Best Coffee (original) (raw)

Previous Entry Comfiest Shops & Best Coffee Jun. 6th, 2010 @ 10:26 pm Next Entry

I have some writing work to do, and it is not getting done sitting at home. (Too many distractions.) This week, I hope to increase my productivity by bringing my at-home work away from home. Given that caffeine flows through my body like prana, a coffee shop is a logical choice.

Which brings me to a couple of questions**:

  1. Where is the best retail cup of coffee in Tucson? Bonus points if they're relatively likely to be brewing a light(er) roast on any given day?

  2. Which shop is most conducive to writing work? Factors would be things like not too busy, staff that doesn't mind me setting up shop for an hour or two, comfy seats, etc. Wi-Fi is not a necessity.

What's your vote for Tucson's awesomest coffee?

** I do have preliminary opinions based on the places I've tried already. But right now, I'm more interested in other people's feedback. I may end up sampling them all. ;)

I've always been partial to Epic for work, but I did my studying for the LSAT at Bentley's.

It's summer, so i don't think places are all that busy. My favorite coffee is at Time Market - i LOVE Exo and plus, it's a local roaster. The downside is that it does get busy and i'm not sure it would qualify as comfy. Ike's is great (and they are open late). Cafe Luce is right by campus and has really good coffee (Maynard's gets their coffee from there). Epic is comfy, but can get pretty busy. Sabine Cafe Passe is a gorgeous and comfy place to work. Not sure about the quality of their coffee. The coffee at Cafe Zope is decent and it's quiet and pleasant work-environment. I used to like working at Tooley's when they were on Congress and they have good coffee, but haven't been to their new location.

Having said all that, i'd probably recommend Ike's above all for the requirements you listed.

I used to write at the Safehouse, there's plenty of couches and electrical outlets, but since they've started allowing smoking again, the smoke's been a bit thicker than I care for.

Black Rose Caffe is a lot more quiet, they have writing groups that meet there to write. If you're looking for calm and mellow, this might be the place.

Crave Espresso Bar has a similar feel to Safehouse, but much cleaner and minus the smoke. Also have lots of outlets and places to sit.

What neplokho says: +Raging Sage and -Safehouse.

Raging Sage does not have Wifi (minus) but roasts their own beans (mega plus). It can get pretty crowded there, but if it does, you can also pop over to Avenue Coffee (one block to the north), which is comfortable and quieter.

I LOVE Raging Sage! It's usually quiet and not crowded.

I've always opted for what is now Shot in the Dark Cafe. I heart their iced coffee, and it seems socially acceptable to set up shop for a while there.

Plus, they are open 24/7, which is great if you work best later in the evening.
And their sandwiches are delicious.

Raging Sage is probably the coffee house with the best brew, but unless you like to work on the patio I don't think there's tons of space. Epic probably has the comfiest environment, or possibly Ike's (I haven't been there in a long time).

But for the absolute best (meaning darkest) coffee, go to Coffee Time on Speedway. Seriously. It's a drive-through, though, so o probably not relevant to your question, but I thought it must be stated.

i love working at revolutionary grounds (small, so there may not always be seats) & shot in the dark! revolutionary grounds is definitely a place to camp out with books & computers. they have free wi-fi, a delicious menu, specialty drinks & desserts, & a great library for browsing/purchasing! shot in the dark is open 24 hours & also has a great menu & wi-fi.
