P... more A shared goal set by many local governments is to stimulate physical activity in neighborhoods. Public playgrounds play an important role in governmental policies for promoting physical activity. Although these playgrounds are generally considered beneficial for participation in physical activity, detailed data on their use is lacking. As a result, it is not clear to policymakers whether their policy choices are the right ones and designers cannot sufficiently align their design choices with the actual behavior of their end users. This Work-in-Progress presents a sensor-based data collection approach to collect detailed data in a real-life setting over a longer period of time. With this, we adapted the Data-Enabled Design process towards public environments by combining a quantitative sensor implementation alongside qualitative research. We show findings from two months of data collection on seven playgrounds and discuss next steps in the Data-Enabled Design framework.

Hosting various activities in the public spaces of nursing homes has long been a typical and effective intervention to enhance residents' social engagement. However, such interventions have their limitations in providing continuous influence on residents' social wellbeing. We have the hypothesis that designing augmented print media systems would improve this situation. This paper presents a preliminary user study aiming to investigate nursing home residents' use of print media, their social preferences of genres and their current social scenarios and barriers related to print media. Based on the results, we summarized several print media products and genres that have potential to be augmented. Besides, future scenarios and three design strategies are derived to guide the design. We think this study can contribute to a deeper understanding of how to design applications for computer-mediated social interaction between nursing home residents.

To be specific, based on the findings of contextual inquiries with older adults and caregivers, a framework of story sharing of the elderly was constructed. Eight design opportunities were then proposed. The concept selection included two rounds: Pugh’s matrix, evaluating the concepts against the baseline. User consultation, getting feedback from elderly users.

The paper was driven by the following research questions: (1) What life stories would the older adults like to share? And (2) In which ways, could design enable the older adults to tell their stories? We designed a tangible device named Slots-Story, and conducted a preliminary evaluation to refine it. In the field study, eight pairs of participants (each pair consisted of an elderly adult and his/her child) were recruited to use the prototype for around ten days. Semi-structured interviews were conducted before and after the implementation. In total 344 stories were collected. Thematic, structural, and interaction analyses were conducted with the stories. In the discussion, we conclude the paper with design considerations for promoting older adults' storytelling with their children.

We believe they also have great potential in the public spaces of caring environments if supported by related knowledge of design and research. This study explores how to design and evaluate interactive public displays in caring environments with a case study. In this paper, we describe the design process of OutLook, which is part of an initial participatory system specially designed for nursing homes to explore the possibilities of connecting people. It aims to enhance nursing home residents' social wellbeing through a "look-outside" and a "postcard-sending" metaphor. A field trial was performed to assess the effects of OutLook on nursing home residents' social behavior and feelings of connectedness. Key design factors for the effects and lessons learned were proposed as regard to design concept, design ideation, form of design, content, interfaces, interactions and field trial.

AAC integrated in a computer-based, interactive play-/learning device with tangible objects and a program based on interactive story-telling and anchored instruction enhances and improves opportunities for an earlier and more effective breakthrough to language and literacy competences. This product, called LinguaBytes, will be developed in a three-year research project for multiple disabled children at pre-school age.

However, such move dramatically increases their risk of social isolation. A contextual inquiry in a local nursing home revealed that most elderly people have few connections with the outside environment because of their decreased mobility and have difficulty establishing relationships with fellow residents. In addition, they show great interests in sharing stories. Based on the above findings, we present Interactive Gallery, a system consisting of a cluster of specially designed camera kits and a gallery-like interactive installation utilized with the metaphor of gallery and postcards. This system aims to make the elders feel more connected to the outside environment, stimulate them to reminisce, and further facilitate their sharing of stories with fellow residents and citizens from local communities.

Typically, collaborative technological applications function to represent people's ideas and to enable the exchange of representational messages between people. By contrast, we designed [X]Changing Perspectives ([X]CP): an interactive table-system for multi-stakeholder collaboration around public issues. The system aims, not to represent views but rather, to scaffold the emergence of situated meaningful couplings in face-to-face interactions. It helps people to align their visual attention, materialises their input and provokes associations. However, [X]CP does contain representations, such as symbols, tangibles and an interactive visualisation. In reflecting on its design and use, we analyse what these representations do, as seen from the perspective of embodied, participatory sensemaking. We explain how representations are not the foundational building blocks of the system, and how they do not have fixed meanings. Rather, as scaffolds, our representations add a layer of artificial structure that guides the ongoing interactive couplings between people, contributing to participatory sensemaking. Applying this approach to the design of mediating technologies for multi-stakeholder collaborations can open up new ways of interacting and understanding between stakeholders without disrupting their collaboration.

Through design research and innovation within these practices, we work together towards social-cul- turally, environmentally and economically sustainable communities.

This paper presents the design and implementation of a participatory view-sharing system which consists of a group of specially designed camera kits and a gallery-like interactive installation, aiming to increase the social connection between elderly people living in a care home and the local communities around. The camera kits are designed to provide openness for local people to share sceneries via public participation, while the interactive installation presents the continuous real-time changes of the shared outside views, and triggers further communication between sharers and receivers through a “postcard-send...

Inspired by embodied sensemaking -- the way people make sense of things through external expression and interaction with other people -- we iteratively designed material, interactive and spatial interventions in the Blue Studio and evaluated them with multi-stakeholder participants in various studies. Thereupon, we analyzed the impact of the design interventions, based on the seven principles to design for embodied sensemaking and highlighted opportunities for refining our interactive space for embodied ideation. Based on the insights gained, a final design of the Blue Studio was realized and evaluated on functionality.
