This study explored Indonesian prospective teachers' views on the adapted (including global socio... more This study explored Indonesian prospective teachers' views on the adapted (including global socio-scientific issues) and revisited (including local socio-scientific issues) versions of the scientific habits of mind (SHOM) scale and compared their SHOM levels concerning teacher education programs and grades. The sample of the study consisted of 1298 Indonesian prospective teachers drawn from departments of chemistry education, biology education, science education, elementary teacher education, and mathematics education. The adapted and revisited versions of SHOM scale were used to collect data. The result showed that the locality of socio-scientific issues (SSI), grade, and teacher education program somewhat influenced the Indonesian prospective teachers' SHOM levels. Also, their familiarity with local SSI acted as a cornerstone to make a decision about SSI via SHOM. This study suggests that teacher education programs should be enriched with undergraduate courses (e.g., integrating SSI into SHOM, measuring SSI with SHOM, ethnoscience through SSI and SHOM) to stimulate the Indonesian prospective teachers' SHOM levels via SSI.

This descriptive study with a quantitative approach aims to compare the Scientific Habits of Mind... more This descriptive study with a quantitative approach aims to compare the Scientific Habits of Mind (SHOM) of undergraduate chemistry education students and postgraduate chemistry education students on Socio-Scientific Issues (SSI) based on gender and education level. A total of 164 students of chemistry education consisting of 69 undergraduate students (12 males and 57 females) and 95 masters students (28 males and 67 females) participated in this study using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected with 28 items through a seven-factor SHOM scale survey. Data from student SHOM measurement results were analyzed using inferential statistical techniques, namely the Two-Way ANOVA test to determine differences in education level and gender and independent t-test to determine differences in each factor analyzed using SPSS IBM 25 with a significance level of 5%. The results of the Two-Way ANOVA test showed that there was a statistically significant difference in SHOM between undergraduate and postgraduate students in chemistry education (p<0.05) and there was no significant difference between male and female chemistry education students (p>0.05). The results of the independent t-test showed that there were differences in the factors of scepticism, rationality, and objectivity at the level of undergraduate students and postgraduate students, while based on gender, there were differences in the factors of curiosity and objectivity. The existence of this research is able to provide insight into how scientists think and encourage students' critical attitudes so that students are able to make decisions in the right way regarding SSI. This research is expected to encourage further research on the importance of training SHOM in learning to overcome various complex problems related to science.

Peserta penelitian ini adalah 38 siswa semester 5 yang sedang mengambil mata kuliah IPA sekolah III. Metode survei dengan pendekatan kualitatif digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Pertanyaan tentang argumen tentang krisis pangan dan hubungannya dengan bioteknologi diberikan di akhir kuliah bagi mahasiswa untuk merespons melalui media sosial. Penggunaan media sosial dimaksudkan untuk mengembangkan ketrampilan mahasiswa dalam berkomunikasi secara ilmiah dengan masyarakat serta membuka wawasan (literasi ilmiah) ke dalam masyarakat. CoRe is one of the Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) representation that it important for pre-s... more CoRe is one of the Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) representation that it important for pre-service chemistry teacher. This study aimed to analyze the correlation among pre-service teachers' understanding of curriculum (UC), understanding of context-based learning (UCB), self-efficacy (SE) and the ability for designing Content Representation context-based chemistry (CoRe-CBC). A correlational study was conducted on 41 pre-service chemistry teacher of postgraduate program. Pre-service teachers' understanding of curriculum was assessed using a 30-item of multiple choices. The 6-open ended questions were used to measure the understanding of context-based chemistry learning. Students' self-efficacy was assessed by a questionnaire with 18 items. A group of experts confirmed the construct and face validity of all the instruments. Data analysis used Pearson correlation and regression. The result showed a high correlation between UCB and ability for designing the CoRe-CBC also with UC. A low correlation occurred between UC and the ability for designing CoRe-CBC. The variable of UCB had the biggest effect on the pre-service teacher ability for designing CoRe-CBC. However, the pre-service chemistry teacher still had less understanding in context-based chemistry learning. This study suggests that pre-service teachers' understanding of curriculum and context-based chemistry learning should be improved. It will useful to support the implementing context-based chemistry learning.

Penelitian eksperimen dengan subjek penelitian adalah siswa-siswa SMA Negeri kelas XI IPA di Propinsi DIY di 3 lokasi sekolah, yaitu SMA N 1 Ngaglik, SMA N 2 Bantul, dan SMA N 5 Yogyakarta. Objek penelitian meliputi pemahaman, motivasi belajar, dan kualitas peta konsep yang disusun siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan penilaian melalui penyusunan peta konsep efektif ditinjau dari motivasi belajar kimia siswa kelas XI IPA di SMA N 2. This study aimed to know the effect of zeolite modification toward density and water content of w... more This study aimed to know the effect of zeolite modification toward density and water content of waste cooking oil after adsorption and to know the optimum temperature of waste cooking oil adsorption using natural zeolite. Natural zeolite was prepared by dipping in aquadest for 1 hour then dried in oven at 120C for 2 hours. Zeolite was activated by dipping in HF solution (1%v/v) with volume ratio 1:2. Sample was filtrated and washed using aquadest followed by calcinations at 500C. Adsorption process was done in batch system at various temperature (50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100C). After adsorption, waste cooking oil was separated from zeolite then was characterized to determine the density, % free fatty acid(FFA), and water content. The results showed that: modification zeolite using HF caused FFA and water content of waste cooking oil decreased. Umbi ini banyak dimanfaatkan masyarakat sebagai sumber alternatif bahan pangan karena kandungan karbohidratnya yang tinggi. Namun umbi gadung mengandung sianida dalam dosis tinggi. Sianida merupakan senyawa berbahaya, yang apabila dikonsumsi secara berlebih akan menyebabkan efek samping seperti sesak nafas, sakit kepala, hingga kematian. The use of particular media, hybrid of the video conference, android-based-game, and the combinat... more The use of particular media, hybrid of the video conference, android-based-game, and the combination between the two in the chemistry teaching-learning has been analyzed. The use of these media was applied on the subject of hydrocarbon in two aspects of students' self-regulated learning and students' achievement. A quasi-experiment with the posttest only design was employed in this study. The data of students' self-regulated learning was collected through questionnaire, and those of the students' achievement was collected through hydrocarbon test. The population was the students of 11 public senior high school in Purworejo regency, Central Java, Indonesia. A total of 72 eleventh grade students were cluster randomly selected from a public senior high school in those regency. Three different classes of samples were set, namely Class CG-1 using android-based-game only, Class CG-2 using hybrid of the video conference only, and Class E using both android-based-game and hybrid of the video conference. The data are tested according to Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) technique and it was found that there is a significant difference in both aspects of the three classes. This study offers insights on the use of android-based-game and hybrid of the video conference to foster the students' self-regulated learning and achievement.

This study aims to explore grade level and gender differences in the attitudes toward chemistry (... more This study aims to explore grade level and gender differences in the attitudes toward chemistry (ATC), self-efficacy (SE), and learning experiences (LE) of preservice chemistry teachers. A total of 191 pre-service chemistry teachers were taken as the sample through cluster random sampling technique. This crosssectional survey collected the data using CAEQ questionnaire and interview. MANOVA test was carried out to analyze the quantitative data on the significance level .05, while the qualitative data were analyzed using Patton qualitative data analysis procedure. The findings showed that: 1) the LE level of the preservice chemistry teachers was the highest compared to SE and ATC ; 2) there was a difference of ATC and SE between the freshman and sophomore groups, and there was a difference in terms of ATC between freshman and junior categories, yet no different in terms of LE based on this category; and that 3) there was no difference of ATC, SE, and LE based on gender. The results accord with the interview findings in which both male and female student teachers have positive attitudes toward learning chemistry, and there was a difference of ATC, SE, and LE between freshman, sophomore, and junior.

The aim of the study was to analyze students' creative thinking skills in implementing multiple r... more The aim of the study was to analyze students' creative thinking skills in implementing multiple representation approach on 'rate of reaction' topic. The one-shot case study research design was conducted with 30-eleventh grade students drawn from a public senior high school in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The learning process involved in implementing concept attainment models with multiple representation approach (CAM-MRA). There were five lesson sequences including presentation of example and non-example, formulation of example, formulation and analysis of hypothesis, closure and application. In each session, macroscopic, microscopic, symbolic and mathematics representation were employed to illustrate 'rate of reaction' concepts. The data were collected by creative thinking based on multiple representation test (CT-MRT) with 24 items. The results showed that the CAM-MRA facilitated the students' creative thinking skills of 'rate of reaction'. However, the students still had difficulty to show the microscopic representation. This study suggests that multiple representations in chemistry should be emphasized in chemistry learning at senior high school.

This study aimed to analyze the correlation among pre-service teachers' understanding of curriculum (UC), understanding of context-based learning (UCB), self-efficacy (SE) and the ability for designing Content Representation context-based chemistry (CoRe-CBC). A correlational study was conducted on 41 pre-service chemistry teacher of postgraduate program. Pre-service teachers' understanding of curriculum was assessed using a 30-item of multiple choices. The 6-open ended questions were used to measure the understanding of context-based chemistry learning. Students' self-efficacy was assessed by a questionnaire with 18 items. A group of experts confirmed the construct and face validity of all the instruments. Data analysis used Pearson correlation and regression. The result showed a high correlation between UCB and ability for designing the CoRe-CBC also with UC. A low correlation occurred between UC and the ability for designing CoRe-CBC. The variable of UCB had the biggest effect on the pre-service teacher ability for designing CoRe-CBC. However, the pre-service chemistry teacher still had less understanding in context-based chemistry learning. This study suggests that pre-service teachers' understanding of curriculum and context-based chemistry learning should be improved. It will useful to support the implementing context-based chemistry learning.

Natural zeolite was prepared by dipping in aquadest for 1 hour then dried in oven at 120C for 2 hours. Zeolite was activated by dipping in HF solution (1%v/v) with volume ratio 1:2. Sample was filtrated and washed using aquadest followed by calcinations at 500C. Adsorption process was done in batch system at various temperature (50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100C). After adsorption, waste cooking oil was separated from zeolite then was characterized to determine the density, % free fatty acid(FFA), and water content. The use of particular media, hybrid of the video conference, android-based-game, and the combinat... more The use of particular media, hybrid of the video conference, android-based-game, and the combination between the two in the chemistry teaching-learning has been analyzed. The use of these media was applied on the subject of hydrocarbon in two aspects of students' self-regulated learning and students' achievement. A quasi-experiment with the posttest only design was employed in this study. The data of students' self-regulated learning was collected through questionnaire, and those of the students' achievement was collected through hydrocarbon test. The population was the students of 11 public senior high school in Purworejo regency, Central Java, Indonesia. A total of 72 eleventh grade students were cluster randomly selected from a public senior high school in those regency. Three different classes of samples were set, namely Class CG-1 using android-based-game only, Class CG-2 using hybrid of the video conference only, and Class E using both android-based-game and hybrid of the video conference. The data are tested according to Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) technique and it was found that there is a significant difference in both aspects of the three classes. This study offers insights on the use of android-based-game and hybrid of the video conference to foster the students' self-regulated learning and achievement.

This study aims to explore grade level and gender differences in the attitudes toward chemistry (... more This study aims to explore grade level and gender differences in the attitudes toward chemistry (ATC), self-efficacy (SE), and learning experiences (LE) of preservice chemistry teachers. A total of 191 pre-service chemistry teachers were taken as the sample through cluster random sampling technique. This crosssectional survey collected the data using CAEQ questionnaire and interview. MANOVA test was carried out to analyze the quantitative data on the significance level .05, while the qualitative data were analyzed using Patton qualitative data analysis procedure. The findings showed that: 1) the LE level of the preservice chemistry teachers was the highest compared to SE and ATC ; 2) there was a difference of ATC and SE between the freshman and sophomore groups, and there was a difference in terms of ATC between freshman and junior categories, yet no different in terms of LE based on this category; and that 3) there was no difference of ATC, SE, and LE based on gender. The results accord with the interview findings in which both male and female student teachers have positive attitudes toward learning chemistry, and there was a difference of ATC, SE, and LE between freshman, sophomore, and junior.

The aim of the study was to analyze students' creative thinking skills in implementing multiple r... more The aim of the study was to analyze students' creative thinking skills in implementing multiple representation approach on 'rate of reaction' topic. The one-shot case study research design was conducted with 30-eleventh grade students drawn from a public senior high school in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The learning process involved in implementing concept attainment models with multiple representation approach (CAM-MRA). There were five lesson sequences including presentation of example and non-example, formulation of example, formulation and analysis of hypothesis, closure and application. In each session, macroscopic, microscopic, symbolic and mathematics representation were employed to illustrate 'rate of reaction' concepts. The data were collected by creative thinking based on multiple representation test (CT-MRT) with 24 items. The results showed that the CAM-MRA facilitated the students' creative thinking skills of 'rate of reaction'. However, the students still had difficulty to show the microscopic representation. This study suggests that multiple representations in chemistry should be emphasized in chemistry learning at senior high school.
