While controlling for the pre-university education and performance indicators, we estimate the odds for the persistence of male and female students, as well as of students with diverse migration statuses. We use the enrolment data of students from 1998-2010. The analysis reveals remarkable and significant effects of gender and migration status, as well as intersectional interference effects from both social categories on persistence. Female and students with immigration status are less likely to persist, even if performance and previous relevant experiences are controlled. A segregated analysis of the student population sheds further light on the interlocked and entangled effects of the social ascriptions underlying gender and migration status. The analysis supports the proposition of the accumulation of (dis-)advantages along students' careers. The profound quantification of gender and migration status effects can be utilized as basis for further research and purposeful policy measures to increase persistence in SET for students with diverse backgrounds.

However, since explanations are not inclined to standardization, finding solutions that fit the algorithmic-based decision-making processes of artificial agents poses a compelling challenge. This paper addresses the concept of trust in relation to complementary aspects that play a role in interpersonal and human–agent relationships, such as users’ confidence and their perception of artificial agents’ reliability. Particularly, this paper focuses on non-expert users’ perspectives, since users with little technical knowledge are likely to benefit the most from “post-hoc”, everyday explanations. Drawing upon the explainable AI and social sciences literature, this paper investigates how artificial agent’s explainability and trust are interrelated at different stages of an interaction. Specifically,...

Rheinlander 2014).

Complexity theories offer models and methods that allow the investigation of how pattern and temporal sequences unfold over time in negotiation interactions. By focusing on the dynamic and interactive quality of negotiations as well as the information, choice, and uncertainty contained in the negotiation process, the complexity perspective addresses several issues of central interest in classical negotiation research. In the present study we compare the complexity of the negotiation communication process among synchronous and asynchronous negotiations (IM vs. e-mail) as well as an electronic negotiation support system including a decision support system (DSS). For this purpose, transcripts of 145 negotiations have been coded and analyzed with the Shanno...

Research paper thumbnail of Communication Models in Human–Robot Interaction: An Asymmetric MODel of ALterity in Human–Robot Interaction (AMODAL-HRI)

In this article, we review existing models of interpersonal communication and interaction models that have been applied and developed in the contexts of HRI and social robotics. We argue that often, symmetric models are proposed in which the human and robot agents are depicted as having similar ways of functioning (similar capabilities, components, processes). However, we argue that models of human–robot interaction or communication should be asymmetric instead. We propose an asymmetric interaction model called AMODAL-HRI (an Asymmetric MODel of ALterity in Human–Robot Interaction). This model is based on theory on joint action, common robot architectures and cognitive architectures, and Kincaid’s model of communication. On the basis of this model, we discuss key differences between humans and robots that influence human expect...

We present an analysis of partial automation of content analysis using machine learning methods. ... more We present an analysis of partial automation of content analysis using machine learning methods. We use a decision-tree induction system to learn from manually categorized negotiation transcripts of electronic buyer-seller negotiations. The data we use were gathered using the Web-based negotiation support systems Inspire and SimpleNS. We experiment with various ways of representing the data to find the solution that gives the best results. The experiments show that we can identify, in relatively small data sets, linguistic features of interest for the detection of negotiation behaviour and negotiation-specific topics. 1

Research paper thumbnail of Abstract Current Practice and Structural Patterns in Virtual Organizations – a Qualitative Analysis of 30 Cases

Virtual Organizations (VO) are seen as possible solutions for Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) ... more Virtual Organizations (VO) are seen as possible solutions for Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) to overcome disadvantages attributed to their size. Although several examples are well described in the literature, the VO domain still needs clarification in terms of VO types and characteristics. This paper aims at exploring different designs of VOs by investigating structural patterns of 30 VOs. The authors develop an analysis framework, the Virtual Profile, which allows profiling each case along structural dimensions. The analysis shows that, in practice, most of the VOs are based on prior relationships of collaborators with a strong focus on core competencies that intend to cooperate on a long-term basis. Apart from these common characteristics, structural differences between two types of VOs are identified. The resulting typology of two main types – “emerged ” (internally driven) and “initiated” (externally driven) VOs- contributes to an explanation of VO types in literature as wel...

The purpose of this paper is to explore differences in computer-mediated negotiation behavior between participants who come from nations which differ as regards two major cultural values: individualism and collectivism. Design/methodology/approach – This is an empirical study with a sample containing 170 negotiators with different cultural backgrounds; it comprises content analysis; and multivariate analysis of variance models. Findings – Comparing negotiators from Asian, North American, and European cultures, it is found that people who come from an individualist culture exhibit different negotiation strategies to individuals from a collectivist culture. Practical implications – Based on the results management may sensitize negotiators in intercultural interfirm relationships to their counterparts' communication strategies. Originality/value – The paper highlights how negotiators' cultures affect their strategic orientation.

Re-conceptualizations of the Homo Economicus acknowledge the emotional influence on individual decision making within social contexts. The interdisciplinary research field of neuroeconomics has become a strong reference point in scientific and more so within socio-economic-political discourse as part of the emerging neurocultural framing of today’s neoliberal society. We analyse the recent formation of the Homo Neuroeconomicus with respect to the current dispute around concepts of separation and competition versus interaction of emotional and rational processing that should predict economic decision making. We outline the permanent gendered connotations of this knowledge production and their impact on the persistence of biologically grounded and separated...
