10 News First swoops on Sharyn Ghidella to anchor Queensland bulletin | TV Tonight (original) (raw)
Former Seven News presenter Sharyn Ghidella will return to Network 10 in a masterstroke move as anchor of Queensland’s 10 News First.
Starting in September, Ghidella will present Queensland’s 10 News First bulletin from the network’s Brisbane studios.
“Returning to 10 News First feels like coming home. Network 10 provided me my first opportunity to work in a metropolitan newsroom and I have nothing but fond memories of my time there in the early 90s,” she said.
“To be returning to present a new local news service, with even more content relevant to Queenslanders, represents an exciting opportunity for me.
“Viewers recently have been very vocal about what they want in a news service, and 10 News First is tailoring its new local bulletin to meet those viewer needs.
“10 News First has long been committed to keeping its audience informed about the issues and events that matter to them, both at home and overseas, and I can’t wait to join this dedicated and highly professional team in the Queensland newsroom.”
Erin Edwards, Executive Editor 10 News First Queensland, said: “Sharyn is a masterful journalist. She deep dives into every story to give Queenslanders the facts without fuss. Sharyn loves Queensland. She understands Queensland.
“We can’t wait to start a new chapter at 10 News First Queensland.”
Martin White, Head of Broadcast News, Paramount Australia and New Zealand, said: “This is a great day for 10 in Queensland. We’re firm believers in local journalism and giving our audiences the best possible content – which aligns perfectly with Sharyn, Brisbane’s number one newsreader.
“We’re thrilled to welcome her back to 10 and can’t wait to get started.
10 News First presenter, Sandra Sully, will hand the reins over to Sharyn next month.
Sandra Sully said: “I’ve known Sharyn for many years, and I’m thrilled to be handing the Brisbane bulletin over to another Queenslander. It’s wonderful to have our local news in such good hands, and I’m delighted to welcome Sharyn home to 10. I can’t wait to see the great things she and our local Queensland team will do together.”

Sharyn’s career is a testament to her dedication and passion for journalism. Growing up in the North Queensland town of Babinda, Sharyn’s early years were marked by a deep love for reading and a burgeoning interest in journalism.
In 1983, Sharyn moved to Brisbane to pursue a Bachelor of Business, Communications. It was during this time that she discovered her passion for journalism and news writing.
An internship at North Queensland Television (NQTV) marked the beginning of a swift ascent through the ranks, moving from their Cairns newsroom to the Townsville studios in 1989. Here, Sharyn honed her skills in producing, reporting, and reading—all essential elements of storytelling.
By 1990, at 24 years old, Sharyn was recruited by Brisbane’s Channel 10 newsroom as an on-the-road reporter and update presenter.
In 1992, Sharyn transitioned to the Nine Network in Sydney, starting as a reporter before being promoted to present Daybreak, an early-morning news program. Sharyn soon became the regular newsreader on the Today Show.
In 2007, Sharyn joined the Seven Network and presented the network’s Brisbane bulletin since 2013. Sharyn recently departed Seven after an illustrious 17-year tenure with the network.
Sharyn’s career comes full circle when she returns to the 10 News First Brisbane news desk in September.

- Proof networks read the TV Tonight comments as this was a suggestion from some readers after the Seven dismissal !
- Really smart move here by 10. Sharyn is a class act and highly regarded here in Brissie. I shall prepare for seeing a lot of her face on bus stops in the coming weeks.
- I always find it funny when they go back to their originating network “It’s like coming home again” is the standard PR spiel template. Same one was used with Jennifer Keyte and Rebecca Maddern.
- Great to have Sharyn back and a local 10 news for Queensland too!
- Reminds me of when 10 News Perth hired Monika Kos after Today Tonight was axed. Hopefully for Sharyn this lasts longer than the 8 or so months that Monika got before getting the axe.
- Congratulations to Network 10/Paramount Global for recruiting Sharyn Ghidella to read the 10 News First 5PM bulletin for Queensland viewers. While I have lambasted the people running this television network for largely making decisions, which have resulted in Network 10 finishing fourth in the ratings on a regular basis in recent times, this decision to employ Ms Ghidella to anchor the QLD news is a sign all is not lost at 10.
I wish nothing but success for Sharyn Ghidella and all her colleagues at 10 News First. I hope management and programmers at Paramount Global (or whoever owns 10 in future) continue to make the right decisions for this TV network going forward ! - Break a leg, Shaz’.
- Hopefully she gives Seven and Nine a run for their money. I don’t know how she lasted at Seven all those years after what I saw on Four Corners
- So 10 News are once again in an extending the desk era. I assume you’ve already drafted the article announcing the closure of the Queensland studio and a return to it being broadcast from Sydney.
- From a weather perspective, I wonder if Josh Holt (as the only studio presenter Ten kept the last time TVQ news was presented up there) will return to Brisbane or stay in Sydney where he’ll continue to do our – and possibly still their – forecasts?
I’d assume they might also want a locally based sports presenter but wouldn’t have a clue who if anyone is likely to be a candidate for that role.
Two other big questions: Should we expect to see a mini-version of Pyrmont’s news set at Mt Coot-tha? And will the relaunched bulletin be produced/broadcast in native High Definition?
Overall, it’s good to hear that 10 News First Queensland is “returning home” even from a Sydney perspective, since that will allow both markets to have more flexibility when it comes to local stories and live crosses, etc. - Local news windows are pre-recorded for QLD, more generic/segments go out live.
- Great to hear she will be back.
- I knew they couldn’t pass up this opportunity. Thank God we get a local bulletin out of Brisbane with a pro reading the news. Great news
- Great to see the return of local news produced from Brisbane studios. I didn’t like it when Brisbane/Perth news being presented from Sydney studios. On many occasions QLD viewers had to suffer through 1-hour-old news during daylight saving. Now that they’ve removed the hybrid news format, it is great to restore all five metro localised news back.
- Am I reading this correctly, Sandry Sully was presenting the 5pm bulletin in Queensland? How did that work if Sandra was presenting live in Sydney too? Is the Queensland bulletin prerecorded earlier in the afternoon?
- 10’s been running a hybrid Sydney/Brisbane news service produced in Sydney since September 2020.
A full return to local news presentation in Brisbane is long overdue, and with the Ghidella hire: will significantly spike 10’s news ratings in the BNE market.
A side effect of this: Sydney’s news on 10 will also change dramatically, as the hybrid windows for some national and world news with Brisbane will no longer be required, handing back around 20mins+ of the bulletin to local control in both markets.
