Although the notion itself is a modern 18th-century creation, this region represents a unique area, where the dominant, pre-Roman cultures (Celtic, Illyrian, Hellenistic, Thracian) are interconnected within the new administrative, economic and cultural units of Roman cities, provinces and extra-provincial networks. This book presents the material evidence of Roman religion in the Danubian provinces through a new, paradigmatic methodology, focusing not only on the traditional urban and provincial units of the Roman Empire, but on a new space taxonomy. Roman religion and its sacralised places are presented in macro-, meso- and micro-spaces of a dynamic empire, which shaped Roman religion in the 1st-3rd centuries AD and created a large number of religious glocalizations and appropriations in Raetia, Noricum, Pannonia Superior, Pannonia Inferior, Moesia Superior, Moesia Inferior and Dacia.
Combining the methodological approaches of Roman provincial archaeology and religious studies, this work intends to provoke a dialogue between disciplines rarely used together in central-east Europe and beyond. The material evidence of Roman religion is interpreted here as a dynamic agent in religious communication, shaped by macro-spaces, extra-provincial routes, commercial networks, but also by the formation and constant dynamics of small group religions interconnected within this region through human and material mobilities. The book also presents for the first time a comprehensive list of sacralised spaces and divinities in the Danubian provinces.

Based on 1348 newly identified letters, 209 photographs (including 25 portraits), András Bodor’s complete bibliography and his unpublished memoir from 1915-1959, the work offers also the first publication of Bodor’s academic correspondence (107 letters) and also extracts from his unpublished journal. Based on a large number of unpublished documents and the major works of Bodor, the book tries to reconstruct the life and academic heritage of a classicist from the periphery of Europe, a region that changed so many times over the long course of the 20th century. András Bodor appears as a student torn between theology and classical studies, a Transylvanian Hungarian who ended up at Oxford, a lecturer at the Hungarian University of Cluj, a researcher who had the idea of establishing a new school of classics, marginalised and compromising, a quiet teacher of the newly established Babeș-Bolyai University and also a senior professor engaged in education policy. The personality and work of Bodor is presented through the short history of classics in Transylvania, Romania, reflecting on the European and global changes of the discipline.

This book is the first comprehensive work focusing on lived ancient religious communication in Ro... more This book is the first comprehensive work focusing on lived ancient religious communication in Roman Dacia. Testing for the first time the ‘Lived Ancient Religion’ approach in terms of a peripheral province from the Danubian area, this work looks at the role of ‘sacralised’ spaces, known commonly as sanctuaries in the religious communication of the province.
The author analyses the role of space sacralisation, religious appropriation, embodiment and the social impact of religious communication in urban contexts (Apulum), military contexts (Porolissum and Mehadia), and numerous examples from rural (non-urban) environments (Ampelum, Germisara, Ad Mediam, and many others). The book concentrates not only on the creation and maintenance of sacralised spaces in public and secondary locations, but also on their role at the micro-level of objects, semi-micro level of spaces (settlements), and the macro-level of the province and the Danubian region as a whole. Innovatively as regards provincial archaeological research, this book emphasises the spatial aspects of lived ancient religion by analysing for the first time the sanctuaries as spaces of religious communication in Dacia. The work also contains a significant chapter on the so-called ‘small-group’ religions (the Bacchic, Mithraic and Dolichenian groups of the province), which are approached for the first time in detail. The study also gives the first comprehensive list of archaeologically-epigraphically- attested, and presumed sacralised spaces within Dacia.

A part of these essays and popularizing articles were published in the Hungarian journal of Cluj (Szabadság), however some of the writings are published for the first time in this volume.
After the foreword written by István Bajusz, doyen of Hungarian archaeologists from Transylvania and president of the Pósta Béla Archaeological Association from Cluj-Napoca, the introduction presents some of the key notions on which the articles are focusing later. Concepts, such as „Transylvanian archaeology”, „public archaeology”, „urban archaeology” and popularizing archaeological heritage are explained in this chapter. The introduction presents also the short history of archaeological research, thought and education in Transylvania in the last three centuries and highlights the important role of public archaeology, as a contemporary tool of the discipline to communicate with a globalized and accelerated society.
The first chapter has three articles, focusing on the case study of Roșia Montana (Verespatak, Alburnus Maior). These articles presenting not only the evolution of the so called „cazul Roșia Montana”, as one of the promotors of the Romanian spring and civic movements, but also the rich and unique archaeological heritage of the settlement.
The second chapter is focusing on the Roman heritage of Apulum. Presenting the most important excavations since 2009, this chapter deals with the case study of the Costuzza park from Alba Iulia, the new museum of the Principia, the possible visit of emperor Caracalla in Apulum (and Dacia) and the importance of Béla Cserni in the local history of archaeology and museology.
The third –and largest chapter – presents numerous topics and case studies from the history of Transylvanian archaeology of the last decade. From the case study of Băile Herculane, the excavations from Porolissum the chapter gives a detailed glimpse also in contemporary problems of urban archaeology in Cluj Napoca, presented through numerous case studies. Similarly, the chapter presents also some of the most notorious case studies of the illegal traffic with archaeological treasures, such as the case of the so called Dacian bracelets. Beside these, the chapter focus also on the first Christian church discovered in Alba Iulia, book reviews, conference presentations and new projects – such as the program of the National Limes Committee.
The fourth chapter presents some of the most succesful archaeologists, who’s work was carried on especially in Transylvania or contributed to the evolution of arhaeological methods and excavations in our region. Archaeologists, museologists, researchers, specialists in heritage diplomacy and even an amateur metal detectorist were asked to speak about their work, the current state of research and the future of Transylvanian archaeology and museology.
The main aim of this book is to present for the very first time the recent archaeological results and case studies for the Hungarian greater public, to promote public archaeology, as a new discipline and tool in communication with the local communities and to open a direct dialogue between archaeologists and the public.

Using the rich correspondence of the scholar and hundreds of archival and photographic materials from numerous Romanian and foreign institutes from 1867–1916, the author relocates the first archaeologist of Alba Iulia in the
local historiography and presents the first detailed biography and genealogy of Cserni. The second part of the volume is focused on Béla Cserni, the scholar, archaeologist and museologist, presenting his important role in (re)discovering Apulum, founding and maintaining the first museum of Alba Iulia and his struggles and endeavours with
national / international authorities and scholars. The volume aims also to contextualise the pioneers of urban archaeology of Transylvania in the early phase of the archaeological research in the Belle Époque of Europe.

The main aim of this project is to create a printed version of BRRD, which first of all, represents the main results of the Romanian and international historiography regarding the Roman religious life, early Christianity and ancient magical practicies in the province of Dacia from Trajan to Aurelian (106 - 271). Secondly, the book wants to highlight the most important currents of the international studies of Roman religion, the quantitative and qualitative dynamics of the Romanian research through a various list of titles appeared in almost two and a half centuries (1754 - 2014).
It will be the first bibliographic list of this kind focusing on a single Roman province.

Colonia Sarmizegetusa-known from the epigraphic sources also as colonia Ulpia Traiana Augusta Dac... more Colonia Sarmizegetusa-known from the epigraphic sources also as colonia Ulpia Traiana Augusta Dacica Sarmizegetusa Metropolis-was one of the major urban centres in the province of Dacia, the political and religious capital of Tres Daciae. The rich epigraphic and archaeological material from the modern site of Sarmizegetusa (Várhely) reflects the splendour of the ancient city and its religious life. The Mithraeum discovered in 1879 and excavated in the following years was a European sensation at the end of the 19 th century: at the time of its discovery, it was the largest ever discovered treasure of figurative monuments from a Mithraic context. While the epigraphic and figurative material of the partially preserved and today missing site was published and reanalysed several times, the interpretation of the material and the curious case of the site still present us with uncomfortable and unsolved questions, such as the interpretation of the quantity of the reliefs, the chronology of the site and the production, use and fate of the largest Mithraic find ever discovered in Europe. The article will address once again these issues and will summarize the possible answers and research perspectives.

rediscovered and systematically researched by various local associations and amateur archaeologists and historians, the pioneers of Roman studies in the region. The largest Roman urban settlement, Apulum was re-discovered and later excavated in various sites by Béla Cserni, founder
of the local museum and the first urban archaeologist of Transylvania. This paper discusses the
impact of Alfred von Domaszewski, as an authority in Roman epigraphy and military studies in
the end of the 19th century and his impact on the early works of Cserni, as well as the intense
academic networks established in late 19th century Europe, reflected by the correspondance of
Cserni.

In this short period, the various groups arrived in the province produced a significant amount of archaeological material – named in this article as materiality of religion – used in religious communication, between divine and human agents. The paper tries to answer the question, if Roman religious communication, lived religion, religious appropriation and embodiment can be understood through the materiality of religion? Presenting the major sources of archaeology of religion from Dacia, the paper will focus on the notion of lived ancient religion and its limits in the edge of the Roman Empire.

The conceptualisation of space has become a significant topic in historical and religious studies... more The conceptualisation of space has become a significant topic in historical and religious studies over the last two decades. Studying the natural, fabricated and mental (‘third-space’) environment has contributed to the better understanding of the agency of spaces in human behaviour.
Spaces can be interpreted as 1) natural landscapes; 2) fabricated or material spaces and 3) imagined, poetic or cognitive spaces, which H. Bhabha and E. Soja have dubbed ‘thirdspace’.
All these three major forms of spaces can be interpreted as tools in religious communication. The spatiality of religion is not a new concept: it has been a theme in religious studies since the so-called spatial turn and the paradigmatic work of J. Z. Smith (1938–2017) on homo faber, his term for the process of creating maps and territories of religion not just in natural and fabricated environments but in academic writing too.
The introduction of space into the study of religious communication, however, is a recent development in Roman religious studies.

The cult of Mithras in Apulum, due to its rich epigraphic and sculptural heritage, was analyzed by Romanian and foreign scholars focusing mainly on iconography, and recently, on socio – religious aspects. Now, the recent Mithraic finds open new research perspectives, focusing mainly on the archaeological material, the particular aspects of the small finds and the interdisciplinary methods of the most recent studies. The
increased archaeological, epigraphic and sculptural material also urged the need of revising Marteen Vermaseren’s unavoidable, but in many parts outdated corpus. For
Dacia, a corpus or a CIMRM Supplementum is now much more auspicious than ever. Excepting some new and important synthesizes about the recently known material, a
monograph on the Cult of Mithras in Dacia is still missing.
The new discoveries will hopefully open new perspectives in the research of the cult, at least in the micro – regional context of Apulum, the largest conurbation of Dacia. Future research must focus especially on the archaeology of the cult and some
neglected aspects of this religion foreshadowing also the importance of museum –pedagogy in the modern urban landscape.

Sacral sites, known as sanctuaries in the traditional archaeological discourse, were omnipresent ... more Sacral sites, known as sanctuaries in the traditional archaeological discourse, were omnipresent in the Roman Empire. Most of the studies till now have focused exclusively on the architectural features of a sanctuary, neglecting the lived aspects of religious communication in Dacia. This study wants to open new perspectives in studying the sanctuaries of Roman Dacia. As a first step of this attempt, the study will present the first comprehensive catalogue of public and shared sacral sites of Roman Dacia. The first part of this paper presents the sacralised spaces of Roman Dacia in public and secondary (shared)
spaces, focusing on the general and local specific aspects of Roman sanctuaries, their architectural features and economic investments. The large number of sanctuaries of Roman Dacia created and maintained between AD 106 and 271 are presented in this work as spaces of religious communication, local religious appropriation and places of embodiment and experience. The second part is the latest and hitherto most comprehensive catalogue of sanctuaries of Roman Dacia, presenting the archaeologically and epigraphically attested as well as presumed sanctuaries in alphabetical order of the settlements. By creating a catalogue of sanctuaries in public and shared spaces, this study is a prologue for a more detailed work, which will focus on the material evidence of lived ancient religion in Dacia and the role of spatial sacralisation in Roman religious communication in this so-called peripheral province of the Roman Empire.

On... more Female Representation in the Epigraphical Sources of Roman Religion in the Danubian Provinces. One of the most important facets of Roman religious communication is the human agency, which not only represents the living actors of public and private religious events, but they are shaping also the legal, spatial, material and divine tools and agents of Roman religion. For a long time, human agency of religious communication in the Roman Empire was predominantly masculine: most of the paradigmatic works on Ro- man religion in the last century focused on male human agents (elite and provincials as well) in religious communication, but ignored the women actors of Roman religion. This article presents the female presence in Roman religious communication in the Danubian provinces through the evidence of the epigraphic material from seven provinces during the Principate. The article is focusing on various female roles in Roman provincial contexts and their presence in Roman religious communication.

placida of the divinity. The paper analyses the connections that may exist in Sarmizegetusa between the cults of Hecate (IDR III/2, 220) and Persephone (AE 1983, 840) and, finally, a very curious relief (IDR III/2, 347) representing a combination between a dog and a goddess, in fact a hypostasis of Hecate.

The cult, emerging in the Roman Period, presumably in Rome, has almost two hundred archaeologically investigated sanctuaries and three thousand known reliefs and statues, with a significant concentration in the Danubian provinces, an area spanning from the Alps to the Black Sea. The study discusses the research history of some of the best-known Mithras sanctuaries in the region, the religious-historical and iconographic characteristics of the cult, as well as the archaeological and touristic potential of sanctuaries made accessible to visitors, particularly the ones in Poetovio and Aquincum.

Understanding the role of women in religious communication within provincial contexts is one of the most fertile areas of research, yet it has not been thoroughly examined within the Danubian provinces. This study marks the first instance in historiography of Dacia where the focus is placed on exploring the role of women in Roman religious communication within the province, employing the comprehensive analysis of all available epigraphic evidence (112 inscriptions). The study provides methodological insights and underscores key research points for future systematic work that needs to be undertaken in the Danubian provinces.

Born as the political narrative of Romanian intellectual emancipation in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, by the end of the nineteenth century it had been adopted by the professionalized historical scholarship, and was then used, due to the stormy territorial and political changes in the twentieth century, as a source of legitimation. While the theory had for long failed to receive professional support from linguistics, thanks to the ideological turn after World War II it gradually suppressed all the alternative hypotheses and possible different interpretations. Its expansion was further bolstered in the second part of Nicolae Ceaușescu’s regime by historical protochronism, which received political legitimation at that time. The paper explores the post-1990 history and reception of the theory of Dacian-Romanian continuity, as well as the recent archaeological and historical analyses that have been published in the topic, in the form of a detailed historiographical analysis, locating them in the context of Hungaro–Romanian scholarly dialogue and of modern European archaeology.

The major aim of the project is to analyze the material evidence of the sacralised spaces from this area (sanctuaries and their archaeological material) through a methodology of religious studies and to analyze the strategies and dynamics of religious communication in a historical perspective during the Principate. The project unites two disciplines, religious studies and archaeology (archaeology of religion), which has no tradition yet in Hungary and Central-East Europe, therefore the project aims also to promote the new approaches of archaeology of religion at the University of Szeged, Department of Religious Studies. The novelty of the project, is that it breaks the traditional province-based approach and will focus on micro-spaces, such as sacralised spaces, settlements and their territory, contextualizing their religious communication within the various networks of the Danubian provinces, as macro-space.

The volume entitled Religion in the Roman Empire (and not "Roman religion" in the empire, which is a great difference as we will see) presents the major religious changes, transformations, and specificities of religious communication occurred in the first four centuries of our common era. The book is the result of a fruitful and paradigmatic collaboration between the ERC Advanced Grant winner Jörg Rüpke and his team from Erfurt (Lived Ancient Religion project 2012-2017) and Greg Woolf, who had a research project focusing on sanctuaries and religious experience in the ancient world in the Max Weber Kolleg. 1 This book-as most of the volumes of the series-intends to be a companion, a synthesis and detailed introduction in the topic, addressing the greater public, students but also the specialists. The book proposes also a new methodological approach, well-known already in the previous, paradigmatic books on Lived Ancient Religion: the relativisation of ancient Roman religiosity, a special focus on individual religion, urban religion and citification of religion, and the appropriation of various religious ideas in the context of an empire. The introduction by Jörg Rüpke and Greg Woolf also proposed a relativisation of the literary sources, interpreted here as a "momentary crystallization of discourse" and not as authoritative sources, as it was interpreted in the 19th century and early 20th century scholarship. The authors emphasize also, that the contemporary approaches of social sciences can open new doors in the research of ancient Roman religion too. The second part of the introduction is focusing on the problematic terminology of

Tateo's work is the result of his research and fieldwork in Romania conducted from 2015 to 2019. From his acknowledgement, we learn that the author spent several months in Romania (especially in Bucuresti) and that his research was assisted by several local researchers. Therefore, this book can be considered one of the good practice-examples of international collaboration between the emerging Romanian study of the sociology of religion and Western institutions and researchers.

an innovative, new methodological approach on Roman
urbanity, which aimed to question the traditional approach
on the settlement distribution, territorial analysis of urban
systems in the last few years. His book deals with a territory,
which is extremely heterogenous, fragmented not only in
ancient times, but especially in contemporary historical
and disciplinary context. Thus, his work is a provocative,
but ungrateful task due to the complexity of the region
and its historiography. Based on the rich material used in
his sophisticated methodological approach, this book will
remain an important contribution in the problematic and
booming field of urban and spatial studies as well.

As a student of Mihai Bărbulescu, doyen of the Romanian studies of Roman religion, 2 Sorin Nemeti follows the historiographic traditions of history of religions established in Romania by M. Eliade. 3 The new French translation is slightly different from the original Romanian version, and out of the 1607 footnotes, only few has new bibliographic references after 2005. 4 The majority of the enormous bibliography -which comprises the entire research history on Roman religion in Dacia and religious syncretism in antiquity -reflects the state of research in the end of the 1990's.

If this turns out to be true, then a new chapter must be opened in the third century history of the Roman Empire, the so-called in the chronicle of the age of soldier-emperors, which is complicated and contains many historiographical mysteries. If the coins in question are original, then Sponsianus would be a selfproclaimed Roman emperor who has not been preserved in written form by universal historiography, and thus the province of Dacia would have its own usurper, usurper of the throne.

In the thesis we used a large amount of data as analogies from all over the Roman Empire but especially from the micro - regional centers of Mithraism located in the Danubian provincies (Poetovio, Aquincum, Carnuntum, Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa). Because there were no systematic excavations of a mithraeum in Apulum till 2008, the lack of information about archaeological data brings as a consequence the fact that our repertoire doesn’t contain the Mithraic small finds as group of sources.
In our thesis we actualized the list of Mithraic adepts from Apulum (A 1 – A 25) and the neighboring region, remodeling the ideas of Manfred Clauss from 1993, by using the latest methods and sources. In a subchapter of the thesis we present the religious manifestation of the individuals as well as the groups'. Our study analyzed in detail, for the first time, the votive offerings as the material sources of individuals, as well as the sacred geography of the three archaeologicaly attested and more two or three supposed mithraeums too, reconstructing the “stark talk” of the only relatively well known mithraeum from Apulum (mithraeum I.).
The 29 (or maybe 33 with uncertainty) adepts of Mithras from the studied region is the second largest mithraic community in Dacia, concentrated in 5 or 6 known sanctuaries (from archaeological, epigraphical or iconographical "Kultbild" data). The community and its religious manifestation reflected by the archaeological sources was an unique and quite a large religious group in the rich palette of the religious life of Apulum, being the most popular so called oriental god of the city.
Our thesis is the first study about the microregional manifestation of a cult, serving by its archaeological repertoire not only as a historico – social and religious analysis but also a first act for a CIMRM Supplementum, initiated by Richard Gordon.

Now, the two new possible sanctuaries open new perspectives for the local research, the same, which appeared in the last two decades in the international study of Mithraism. Mainly focusing on the archaeological material, the particular aspects of the small finds, the inderdiscipliary methods of the most recent studies highlighted new aspects of the cult. The increased archaeological, epigraphic and sculptural material also urged the need of the revision of Marteen Vermaseren’s unavoidable, but in many parts outdated corpus . For Dacia, a corpus or a CIMRM Supplementum now is much more timely, than ever. Except of some new and important synthesizes about the recently known material , there is still missing a monography on the Cult of Mithras in Dacia .
The new discoveries hopefully will open a new gate and perspectives in the research of the cult, at least, in the micro – regional context of Apulum, the largest conurbation of Dacia. The future research must focus especially on the archaeology of the cult and some neglected aspects of this religion foreshadowing also the importance of museum – pedagogy in the modern urban landscape .
In 1892 Király Pál, the first scholar, who wrote a monography about the cult in Dacia published his book about Apulum, mentioned, that “Mithras left so many and voluminous monuments (in Apulum), that it is quite sure, that there will be more than one sanctuaries” . A secular research has proved with succes his vision.

Being a mystery cult formatted in the age of Hellenism, one of the most important characteristics of the cult is the Kultbild, the central relief with a strict iconographical aspect, containing a soteriological and astrological message. The iconographical program of a cult reflects the essential message of a religious group, thus the changing, varieties and anomalies appeared in the religious art reflects the dynamic changes of a cult.

Back in 2004, W. Hanson and I. Haynes have outlined a new direction in the Roman archaeology of Dacia, away from the ‘patriotic’ old view of Romanian historiography. The main aim of the session is to present the latest results of modern researches on Roman Dacia according to the comparative and cognitive streams on research. A forum where various disciplines from material studies to cultural and social history will reshape the role and impact of the province in a globalized frame and history of the Principate, still, pointing out the specific patterns of this provinces. The session will focus on various aspects of Roman history, economy, Limes and the materiality of the spiritual life and art in the province, presenting as case studies the latest results of the new ‘wave’ of foreign Romanian researchers and their current projects.

The study of Roman religion in a micro – regional, urban context has gained an increasing appeal in the field, highlighting some depreciated aspects of the religious life of the Romans, focusing especially on the specific manifestation of the individuals and local communities, interpreting Roman religion as a ”lived” and dynamic socio- cultural phenomenon. The purpose of this poster is to deal with the particular case of Apulum, the largest conurbation of Dacia, analyzing more than 600 epigraphic, iconographic and non – figurative religious sources of the settlement. Constituting of a strongly manifested military community (the soldiers and veterans of legio XIII Gemina) and of a culturally, ethnically and especially religiously diversed civil community, Apulum is a perfect case for applying the latest methods of Roman religious studies. Our research emphasises the religious life of a Roman city, applying the methodology of the latest current of the cognitive archaeology and religious studies, the theory of the Erfurt School which is not focusing on “votive religion” quantifying the archaeological data or on rituals, symbols and culture as text, but especially on particular urban and regional cases, the real interaction of individuals and communities.

With more than 600 articles, books and epigraphic repertories, his contribution to the study of Roman history remain a milestone also for the next generations. His monumental legacy needs to be analysed and set in a proper place in the historiography of Roman studies. In the age of the internet and virtual social – networks popularizing ancient history is flourishing. The creation of different popularising blogs, personalized WebPages and interactive online surfaces created a rich possibility for sharing the ancient heritage for a much more larger public. Cherishing the intellectual heritage of some great schol-ars such as Raffaelle Pettazzoni (http://www.raffaelepettazzoni.it/), Franz Valerie Cumont (http://www.cumont.ugent.be/en) or Theodor Mommsen (http://www.mommsen.de/theodor/) became easier through the internet. The facebook page of Géza Alföldy fits perfectly in this phenomenon. The aim of this webpage is to share pictures, anecdotes, articles and recent events related to the personal life, academic activity, scholarly work and heritage of the great Hungarian – German scholar. Every published picture is from controlled online sources or from scholars and student who were in personal contact with Alföldy. The articles are from online databases or partially up-loaded with the permission of the editor or co–authors. Every picture has a short description, many times completed with an anecdote or the story be-hind the inscriptions, object or events. This makes the website much more personal and attractive for a large public. The main target group are the stu-dents and young researchers interested in the Roman history and generally, in humanities. Using an interactive and always changing platform, facebook creates unique possibilities for this kind of scholarly communication, used now extremly often by universities, institutions and great projects too.
Our aim is to promote the website in different scholarly and academic fo-rums too, keeping alive the memory and rich heritage of the great scholar.

The religious manifestation of the women in Roman Dacia was laconically presented till now. In this poster the author presents the religious activity of the 47 women attested on votive inscriptions - mainly as a secondary person, a daughter or a wife. As a case study I present the altar of Sextia Augustina, a Celtic women probably born in the North part of Britannia (Mons Badonnicus) who came in Dacia probably due to the intensive dislocation of the Celtic troops of that region. She worshiped the Badones, a hapax in the Roman religious pantheon attested only in Apulum till now. Her manifestation could be interpreted as a religious "fanatism" or "patriotism" transforming a local divinity into a personal one.

About the book: The Danubian provinces represent one of the largest macro-units within the Roman Empire, with a large and rich heritage of Roman material evidence. Although the notion itself is a modern 18th-century creation, this region represents a unique area, where the dominant, pre-Roman cultures (Celtic, Illyrian, Hellenistic, Thracian) are interconnected within the new administrative, economic and cultural units of Roman cities, provinces and extraprovincial networks. This book presents the material evidence of Roman religion in the Danubian provinces through a new, paradigmatic methodology, focusing not only on the traditional urban and provincial units of the Roman Empire, but on a new space taxonomy and glocality of religion.
About the author: Csaba Szabó is currently a research fellow with the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Szeged (Hungary). His current research is focusing on materiality of Roman religion in the Danubian provinces, reception of classical archaeology and antiquity in Romania and materiality of religion in contemporary studies in Central-Eastern Europe. Prior to the current volume we will be launching at this event, Roman Religion in the Danubian Provinces: Glocality and materiality of past religions, he recently also published two volumes on Roman religion and history of archaeology:
