Their intimacy becomes a shared or understood experience through their interpretation. Tracy Ryan’s work has always been like this. Precise, exact words highlight the simplicity and complexity of existence. Humans live, eat and breathe, or try to—these are fairly simple facts of life even if execution can be complicated. Ensuring we do this, our earth does this, our families, communities, and friends do this, is also simple and not. Instinct and love for family is not always innate, but survival is hardwired into most organisms, so there must be general aspects that are.

Had we listened on the radio to the stories of Simpson and his donkey? As part of the legacy of World War One, Gallipoli was told as a tragedy from teachers and historians of the right age to have had parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, sisters and brothers participate. At least in my experience, though it is not necessarily the experience of Robyn Rowland, the author of This Intimate War (McBride 2015).

However, there are also obstacles to progress, as much of the workforce system favours male employees over female. While this disparity is not limited to Japan, many female educators within the country may not be aware of support groups, networking opportunities, methods to strengthen curriculum vitae (CV) and help for women with families—among other forms of assistance—all of which can contribute to professional development. Systemic gender bias can affect utilisation of such resources by way of limited information and availability, thereby adding to disparity. This essay reviews some of the long-lasting causes and effects of gender inequality in Japan and, by highlighting useful materials and services for female academics, it addresses and attempts to remedy some of this imbalance. The paper suggests that knowledge of support systems and bolstering confidence at personal, specialist and networking levels can help women progress in their careers despite the continued existence of gender bias.

The work generated from this input can be used as a “springboard” to deepen general learning. When conducted in English Medium Instruction classes (EMI), or in classes with related forms of teaching, the learning of English as an Additional Language (EAL) can be enhanced as a by-product (as implied by Allwright, 2013, p.6). As part of an EMI course designed by the author, second-year undergraduate comparative culture majors at a Japanese university explored aspects of creativity by researching elements of twentieth century art movements, including writing methods. From these literary guidelines students produced their own creative work, which ultimately appeared as part of a whole-class poster presentation. Among other features, students focused on the history and certain literary personalities of the movements as part of their research. The main interests of this article are learner autonomy, agency and growth generated a) from using this creative student-produced work, and b) from engagement with the research and creative material. It shares details of class activities and evaluations from the yearlong course, including examples of student literature. Learner rather than language development holds the stronger focus of the paper. However, as the lessons were conducted in a foreign language (English), aspects of language development are touched upon.

Can exercises be developed to encourage the connection that can lead to empathy, and is developing empathy necessary for healthy global interaction? First-year comparative culture students at Aichi University use the Putumayo World Music website as a resource when learning both research and presentation skills. The classes are taught in English, and by using technology, music content and research, intercultural awareness is raised and linguistic skills are developed. At a basic level these exercises address and ameliorate some of the ethnocentric stages of Bennett’s Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) (2004, 1986/2011), and work towards alleviating some of the conscious and unconscious defences students might have in recognising the value of different cultures. The exercises can work coincidentally in the direction of raising self-awareness of the students’ own culture, particularly at a personal level. All of this can contribute to the ability to “ . . .engage in empathy . . .” in relation to other cultures (Bennett, 2004, p. 70). This chapter will discuss some of the linguistic, pedagogic and cultural benefits of exploring non-main stream music in a Japanese classroom setting, using English as the means of instruction

In attempts to define the process, observers and practitioners also feel that metacognition and being prepared are important components (Harnad, 2007; McMahon, 2012). These features can rally with and against views of creativity as being filtered through and stemming from “sensory and affective knowledges”, movement and corporeal actuality (Gibbs, 2005, ¶20; Krauth, 2008, 2010; MacFarlane, 2005). The hypothetical aspects of creativity touched on above are in no way exhaustive or exclusive of one another, nor are they the only elements, views and areas researched. However, this essay will particularly focus on the notion of the body, including memory, as a nesting place for creativity and “dimly-remembered melodies” (¶20). Its main focus is in the area of creative writing

Activities designed to overcome these defenses are sorely needed in a world where ‘accidental’ drone victims are officially regarded as “bugsplats” (Robinson, 2011), and where many global policies cultivate the existence of “unpeople”, that is, people who are ‘dispensable’ amongst the world’s population (Curtis, 2004 in Chomsky, 2012).

One of the most confusing, but most often uttered piece of advice is, “Show, don’t tell”. A quick search of this term on Google will return more results than inhabitants of Australia. Three and a half times more. For beginning writers in particular, it is a valuable piece of advice. Yet, if the beginning writer cannot understand or apply the advice, it is useless. The following lecture explores three points of this concept in detail, those being:
1. Express the abstract through the concrete 2a. Avoid over-summarisation and
2b. Show the story through scenes where necessary
3. Be wary of overusing the passive and indirect voice,
The lecture attempts to ‘show’ how not to ‘tell’ by providing examples and explanation which will hopefully decode and illuminate this ironically ‘hard to pinpoint’ concept.

It introduces the concepts of what defines authentic materials, and presents various points of view of researchers, teachers and academics on their usefulness. In addition, it defines and illustrates cognitive learning concepts such as schema and ways of processing thought and knowledge. These concepts and points of view are practically applied to an EFL class, and the process and results are discussed. The effect of using authentic materials is also explored throughout.

Ellis specifies sociocultural models as those concentrating on the environments when and where communication in the target language (TL) is commonplace, and where the social conditions of these environments control the engagement of learners with the TL, which in turn governs the degree to which they acquire it (Ellis, 1997, p42). In the case of the Acculturation Model, the individual learner aspects of motivation and ego-permeability (aspects which will be explored further in this essay) also play a part (Schumann, 1986, p. 384).

From 1977 to 1981 Norm was the government’s beer-bellied mascot, its way of motivating the masses to movement. He encouraged us to participate every day—to be active, to exercise. ‘Life. Be in it’; that was the slogan. The ad played on our televisions, especially during the cartoons and science shows explaining how spiders spin webs and how to glue things to other things. Everyone could hum the theme and we who grew up before the Internet united us in our disparity can recall it still.
