This paper constructs an education method for an artifact system that involves (I) understanding common viewpoints for creation of artifacts, (II) practice by project-based learning, and (III) reflection by mutual evaluation and retro-spection. In order to clarify how (I) is acquired and improved through (II) and (III), intensive lectures were conducted for three years at the University of Tokyo. It was shown that there was a difference in the degree of understanding of each viewpoint, and that understanding was promoted through practice in performance evaluation, measurement, use and maintenance, and through retrospectives in design, integration, function and service. The secondary effect of critical thinking from the viewpoint of (I) was also observed.

Referred to as a prosumer, a customer can be not only consumer but also may participate in design processes of service for better customer experience. This chapter argues for establishing a methodology to engineer competitive services by bridging “professional design by provider” and “non-professional design by customer,” while taking a tourism service as an example. The tourism service is a typical service in which a customer’s activities are greatly emphasized, while its design processes are similar to those of physical products. Furthermore, non-professional designs by free individual travelers can be seen naturally. In the case study, analysis of tourist activities by using GPS logger is conducted to obtain a basis for design of sightseeing tours. Then the two design support systems are developed: Interactive tour planning system for travelers and design support system of tour lineup for ...

A new methodology is necessary to create value by combining services and products in this context. To serve this need, we propose a new engineering discipline called Service/Product Engineering (SPE). SPE differs from traditional, primitive engineering and concurrent engineering in that the design target is customer value rather than a physical product. Both products and service activities are means of value creation, so in SPE, products and service activities are designed in parallel according to the value to be designed. After the design is complete, production planning, production and service activities are completed. The roles of product design and product production change under SPE: from product production to value production. To accomplish this, we describe our model of service, a computer-aided design system and an applied example. Both our modeling method and the CAD tool are verified through an example presented herein.

This paper proposes a design method of service system that encourages co-creation using a structural framework called TriCyPSS (Triple Cycles for Product Service System) from the viewpoints of service chain and continuous provision among client business, my business, and partner business. This paper shows a case study according to the method's procedure and details notations using a system modeling method called i* (eye-star). Using them, we clarify value in use brought by the service chain and continuous provision as well as data utilization and information circulation. Finally, this paper employs the method together with business planning methods and tools for practical use.

This ability is much needed throughout the industry, while this type of design is highly challenging due to its high complexity. To date, however, there have been only a few proposals for methods that tackle this challenge at the conceptual design stage. This article proposes a model, a method, and a computerized tool that together support the conceptual design of families of product/service systems (PSSs). First, a PSS family model is presented and then implemented as an add-on to an existing computer-aided design (CAD) tool. Next, a method building upon the model and lean principles is developed as a design procedure. The software and the method are verified through an industrial example of designing a family of...

Despite Product/Service Systems (PSSs) having developed substantially in industry and academia for the last two decades, no scientific review of PSS customization has been published. This prompted us to conduct a review of scientific papers relating to products, services, and PSS customization with a focus on design, with the aim of clarifying future research directions in PSS customization. In particular, distinct design models and methods were individually examined, with a special focus on service aspects, in terms of what to design and how to design it. The population of papers included in the review was those included in the Web of Science. Even though service customization has been utilizing the knowledge generated by product customization, which has been researched extensively for decades, there are differences between them, such as the difficulty associated with modularity. The same or even larger differences apply to PSS customization, because, apart from service characteristics, PSS also has product characteristics and thus is more complex. Results also include that the module-based platform strategy used in service customization can also be used for PSS. Although several papers concerned with PSS customization have been published thus far, their focus has been on the service aspect of PSS, providing further research opportunities. Existing methods to design PSS can be also applied to develop a method for PSS customization.
