Deo, and so on, we can easily know that Śvetāmbara Jainism has disqualified some kinds of people from entering the monastic order. However, there have been little detailed studies on this problem. Thus this paper will focus on some aspects of the concept on the permission or the prohibition of entering the monastic order in Jainism. Having created an overview of the people who are not qualified to enter the order found in the Cheyasuttas and their Bhāṣyas, I investigate the discussions about the qualifications to enter the monastic order found in Haribhadra’s Paṃcavatthuga I 32ff.: (1) 15 kinds of qualifications to enter the monastic order (2) age limit for entering the monastic order (3) the opinion that old persons should renounce the world, and Haribhadra’s objection (4) the opinion that people who have no relatives should renounce the world, and Haribhadra’s objection (5) the opinion that people who have relatives should renounce the world, and Haribhadra’s objection.

The edition on which these indexes are based is:
Hermann Jacobi (ed.), Sthavirāvalīcarita or Pariśiṣṭaparvan, being an Appendix of the Triśaṣṭi-śalākāpuruṣacarita by Hemacandra, Calcutta: Asiatic Society of Bengal, 1932 (second edition).
We also consulted Jacobi’s first edition published in 1891, and the following Indian edition and two European translations were very helpful for our task:
Subodhacandra Nānālāla Śāha (ed.), Kalikālasarvajña-ācāryaśiromaṇi Śrīmad Hemacandrasūrīśvaraviracitam Śrī Pariśiṣṭa Parva, Śrutajñānaprakāśanamālā puṣpaṃ 2, Muṃbaī: Śrīmatī Gaṃgābāī Jaina Ceriṭebala Ṭraṣṭa, 1980.
R.C.C. Fynes (tr.), The Lives of the Jain Elders, New York: Oxford University Press, 1998.
Johannes Hertel (tr.), Ausgewählte Erzählungen aus Hēmacandras Pariśiṣṭaparvan, Leipzig: Wilhelm Heims, 1908.

In this context (avagrahādibhir bhinnaṃ bahvādyair tair api / indriyānindriyabhavaṃ matijñānam udīritam //) Hemacandra clearly uses it as a synonym of manas (cf.
