Barcelona’s urban characteristics and its tourist appeal are not merely outcomes of the Modernist... more Barcelona’s urban characteristics and its tourist appeal are not merely outcomes of the Modernist period or a recent dramatic urban transformation but rather the result of a long and tumultuous historic evolution. The present article presents an account of relevant historical, political, economic, and social forces shaping Barcelona’s urban evolution from the medieval times until the 1970s. The urban history of Barcelona illustrates how the landscape of a fashionable city is the result of urban planning in conjunction with many social, economic, and political events that often produce unexpected results.

Este artículo estudia las categorías analíticas del concepto de capital social desde una perspect... more Este artículo estudia las categorías analíticas del concepto de capital social desde una perspectiva de género. Cómo se produce, se distribuye y quienes son los beneficiarios de capital social está siendo objeto de un debate abierto dentro de diferentes disciplinas. En geografía, capital social se puede configurar como una herramienta de interpretación básica, sobre todo en el estudio de los trabajos de mujeres en áreas rurales de montaña. El artículo analiza las aportaciones de cuatro de los más importantes teóricos del concepto, Pierre Bourdieu, James Coleman, Robert Putnam y Nan Lin, con el objetivo de hacer una relectura de capital social que ayude a abrir un debate sobre cómo identificar y analizar las aportaciones hechas por las mujeres en el ámbito de capital social. Barcelona está experimentando una transformación urbanística a gran escala con importantes implic... more Barcelona está experimentando una transformación urbanística a gran escala con importantes implicaciones no tan sólo en la trama urbana sino también sobre su base económica y social. Con un creciente énfasis en políticas de desarrollo económico, a nivel de gobernabilidad de la ciudad de Barcelona, cabe destacar el énfasis que el Ayuntamiento otorga a la colaboración público-privada como herramienta de planificación. Esta colaboración contrasta con la escasa voluntad de inclusión de la participación ciudadana. El presente artículo argumenta que esta situación es el resultado de la respuesta local a la influencia de dos procesos diferentes pero complementarios. En primer lugar se analiza el peso del proceso de globalización en las características de la política local. The arrival of the high-speed train service generates opportunities for dynamisation that particu... more The arrival of the high-speed train service generates opportunities for dynamisation that particularly affects the local scale. Local scale authorities usually react by deploying planning and management resources to guarantee the best possible integration of new infrastructure in the local environment, striving to make sure that these new elements are coherent with the existing urban fabric and to maximise the level of accessibility generated by its presence. In this article, we examine the measures undertaken in Segovia and associated with the establishment of its new high-speed train station. The fact that the station was located in a peripheral area implies the need to undertake a wide range of measures to manage physical planning and maximise mobility. Municipal and territorial planning highlights the importance of infrastructure and of integrating a station and its immediate surroundings within the wider urban area. Barcelona’s urban characteristics and its tourist appeal are not merely outcomes of the Modernist... more Barcelona’s urban characteristics and its tourist appeal are not merely outcomes of the Modernist period or a recent dramatic urban transformation but rather the result of a long and tumultuous historic evolution. The present article presents an account of relevant historical, political, economic, and social forces shaping Barcelona’s urban evolution from the medieval times until the 1970s. The urban history of Barcelona illustrates how the landscape of a fashionable city is the result of urban planning in conjunction with many social, economic, and political events that often produce unexpected results.

Este artículo estudia las categorías analíticas del concepto de capital social desde una perspect... more Este artículo estudia las categorías analíticas del concepto de capital social desde una perspectiva de género. Cómo se produce, se distribuye y quienes son los beneficiarios de capital social está siendo objeto de un debate abierto dentro de diferentes disciplinas. En geografía, capital social se puede configurar como una herramienta de interpretación básica, sobre todo en el estudio de los trabajos de mujeres en áreas rurales de montaña. The Foucauldian concept of power-knowledge has been a useful lens to study the idea, discourse, a... more The Foucauldian concept of power-knowledge has been a useful lens to study the idea, discourse, and practice of development. Since the 1980s, many scholars have employed this critical framework to unearth the overlooked power relations created and altered by the concept of development in general, and development projects in particular. This article contributes to this debate by advancing and enriching this perspective. Analyzing a broad number of official sources supporting Turkey’s Southeastern Anatolia Project (Güneydoğu Anadolu Projesi, GAP) and drawing theoretically on the concept of power of Michel Foucault and absences of Boaventura de Sousa Santos, we argue that GAP is part of a state strategy to produce southeastern Turkey by design and the representation of lack. We develop a framework that helps us understand the narratives on the project as a design of absences, a design-power that works as a particular form of power-knowledge. In the terrain of absences, design has become the way to exercise power together with the observation of geography and population. The absences created by the development discourse become a key-feature of design-power. In this sense, GAP is design-power to produce a new region and new subjectivities and works as a particular form of power-knowledge.

The Southeastern Anatolia Project (Güneydoğu Anadolu Projesi, GAP) was launched as a massive pack... more The Southeastern Anatolia Project (Güneydoğu Anadolu Projesi, GAP) was launched as a massive package of water and land resources development project in 1977. Over time, the project was redefined as a multisectoral, integrated, and sustainable regional and human development project. This chapter seeks to make a critical appraisal of GAP on the basis of its formal objectives. To this end, the chapter explores GAP-induced changes and challenges specifically in the (i) infrastructural and economic and (ii) sociocultural dimensions of the project. Our main conclusion is that the state’s claim about the project’s success is not supported by the state’s own data.
