It argues that urban agriculture is a systemic concept – agriculture intertwined with urban dynamic – but that a systemic approach is often missing. Such an approach allows identifying strengths and weaknesses of urban agriculture for a particular city, region or country, in a comprehensive way. Based on these insights, more precise and targeted policies can be designed to stimulate urban agriculture and innovations needed in its context. The chapter illustrates this through the presentation of urban agriculture in Mexico City, presented in a number of elements of an innovation system, such as system boundaries, dynamics, institutions, knowledge, and learning cultures. Cultural dimensions are as yet only rarely recognized. The chapter describes how the cultural dimensions of urban agriculture are very important in understanding the case of Mexico City, and probably in much more cities.

In terms of the content, the chapters may at first glance look to have little in common, as they touch upon a wide range of topics such as the United States petroleum industry, inter-disciplinarity in the academic environmental sector in Mexico, photosynthesis, the philosophy of transdisciplinarity, artful sustainability, indigenous cultures, scientific collaboration, aesthetic experience, the Indian sacred book Atharva-Veda, and decision-making processes. Nevertheless, there is common ground in all of them. The message in almost all chapters is that transdisciplinarity is not a recent invention or a novel concept referring to a new practice. On the contrary, transdisciplinarity basically always existed; as a practice, in science, in art, in indigenous cultures as well as in decision-making process. Transdisciplinary knowledge production is not something that we need to create, but that we rather need to recognize and work with, in knowledgeable and educated ways.

This narrative is based on various obsolete philosophical assumptions, and hampers the transformation process, as it distances the population from being part of this. It then sketches the narrative of enchanting sustainability and shows how this has the capacity to engage, intrigue and motivate people to be involved. It is rooted in an arts-based approach of connecting aesthetics, associative thinking, reflective practice, emotion-based working, aspiration and intentionality. The article moves on beyond the two ideal-types, making a plea for a hybridization, and proposes transdisciplinary hermeneutics as a practice of realizing this hybridization. Finally it explains how arts-based education for sustainability is, in various ways, key in the transformation process towards enchanting and transdisciplinary sustainability.

In answering this question, the chapter does not look at reduction, reuse and recycling of waste in a narrow sense but approaches the topic from a wide and systemic perspective inspired by the concept of national innovation systems. The authors first provide some key data with respect to the current handling and management of waste in Mexico and then present in a conceptual way their systemic view on a circular economy. Subsequently they explore the potentials and challenges for Mexico, revising the following elements of their conceptual model: “market trends and conditions”; “competitiveness and productivity”; “the political and regulatory framework”; “education, training and knowledge transfer”; and “learning culture”. They finish off with some conclusions concerning the potentials and challenges of Mexico in moving towards a circular economy.

Still, in both cases, no common definition has been accepted, nor can we say that the studies of these issues have been complete. On the contrary, culture and sustainability will always be relevant issues for analysis, because they strongly affect our daily lives. To determine the ways in which culture and sustainability are interconnected in this rapidly changing world is, obviously, a difficult task to undertake. Even though the editors argue that culture has rarely been central to discussions around sustainability, this ends up being less relevant. The reason is that the book is primarily about new models of transdisciplinary thinking in sustainable development.

It centers on the concept of transdisciplinary hermeneutics, as a form of contextualizing science in the framework of cultural ideas, subjective experiences of the researchers involved in the research process, and of imagination and the artful creation of possible new realities. The concept is rooted in the work of Basarab Nicolescu and the Paris based CIRET, the "Centre International de Recherches et Études Transdisciplinaires." In this approach, reality is seen as complex and multilayered, and cannot be known only through the lens of modern science. Philosophy, art and subjective experience are essential and complementary ways of knowledge production that provide context to scientific knowledge, giving it meaning and perspective. To be able to engage in transdisciplinary hermeneutics, researchers need to complement cognitive knowing with embodied and enacted knowing. They as well need to combine the formal and science-based language of what is seen and measured, with the poetic, polyphonic and metaphorical language of what is unseen but sensed, felt and envisioned. The article finally sketches the importance of two competencies that transdisciplinary researchers need to acquire, the competencies of mindfulness and of transdisciplinary dialogue of knowledges.

More in particular, it analyses the interactions of some of the passengers with 'Texel', an experimental artistic dispositive composed of a number of hourglasses that responds to the movements of the passengers. The study identifies several processes and conditions that explain why some passengers did interact with Texel, while others did not. Subsequently, it explores aesthetic experiences realized during the interaction of people with the device. It focuses on the passage from "aesthetics of perception" to "aesthetics of operation", and on interactive works of art creating such aesthetics. It observes that this takes place in spaces in between the internal experience of the passenger and the external reality of the artistic device, and that this aesthetics is transdisciplinary as it integrates cognition, emotions and enacting. Finally, the article explores some links between aesthetic experience and transdisciplinary hermeneutics, and between intermediary spaces of experience and Nicolescu's concept of the Third Included.

It argues that artful doing is a genuine transdisciplinary practice that is at once rooted in sensitivity, intuition as well as analytical rationality. It organically links analytical and feelings intelligence with the intelligence of the body. It goes on to show how artful doing can be studied, taught and practiced in spaces of experimentation and imagination. Damping may be increased by the use of short fibres or a matrix material with high dissipation. Experimental and theoretical studies are described which show that a lamina can be made which has high damping; the effects of lamina properties on those of the laminate have been investigated. The effects of fibre length, matrix type and fibre orientation have been assessed with the objective of optimizing the dynamic properties of laminated CFRP plates using combinations of short/continuous fibres and conventional/highly dissipative resin matrices.

In response to that and with the intention to contribute to the further development of transdisciplinary theory and methodology, we aim to explore the potentials of the narrative as a form of transdisciplinary knowing that is rigorous yet escapes from the strict methodology imposed by positive science. Our contribution will explore the narrative in its aesthetic form (literature), in its form of vivid culture as well as in its form of cosmological fundamentals (stories and legends). It will analyze if and how the narrative offers a platform to entangle the abundant heritage of human experiences, both in a historic as well as in an individual way. It will finally asks if this lively, discontinuous and complex way of knowing may be a base for the construction of a more open, accessible and democratic house of knowledge.

Such integration is important in realizing our dreams and utopias, as is illustrated with Scharmer's concept of "presencing" and Bloch's concept of "anticipative consciousness". It is equally important in diminishing social inertia vis-vis problems like Climate Change or sustainability in general. This is illustrated presenting ideas of various philosophers, writers and artists, among them Hannah Arendt, Joseph Beuys and Norma Bateson. Subsequently a proposal for a transdisciplinary hermeneutics is presented as a dialogue with Reality, integrating experiential, formal and direct knowing allowing us to connect with both our inner self and the outside world, listening to how we allow the world to disclose itself. Finally it mentions how such a hermeneutical practice can be realized in spaces of imagination and experimentation.

It equally links it with ancient oriental ideas regarding the relationship between body, mind and soul, and practices as meditation and yoga to nourish the body as an organ of perception. It then explores its consequences for our ways of knowing, and concludes that the Mind as Ecology needs to be nourished by an Ecology of Knowing including direct and phenomenological knowing, autobiographic and experience-based knowing, and formal and science-based knowing. The article argues that such Ecologies of Knowing can be realized through the practice of Embodied Transdisciplinary Hermeneutics. It finally presents seven steps to teach Embodied Transdisciplinary Hermeneutics. Two of these steps focus on the learning process as a whole, and five explore particular ways of knowing, and how to teach them.

The origin of the approach is to be found in the American company 3M. In 1975 3M initiated its 3P-program: its "Pollution Prevention Pays" program. The philosophy of the program was that any waste produced during the production process is to be regarded as a misallocation of input materials. The 3M-3P-program was designed to work through the inputs of the employees. Employees were encouraged to report options that could reduce waste and emissions and could save money at the same time. The company promised that any option that would reduce costs would be implemented and the employee would receive a reward for reporting the option. In this way 3M was able to reduce considerable amounts of waste and considerable amounts of costs at the same time (Royston 1979). Obviously the approach attracted attention from various sides. The curricula aim at fostering student citizenship, and at training transdisciplinary practices. First, the concepts of citizenship and transdisciplinarity are introduced and discussed, with an emphasis on Nicolescu's concept of transdisciplinarity that emphasises the integration of formal, experiential and direct knowing. The article concludes that designing transdisciplinary curricula implies the introduction of a new paradigm that: 1) needs to be broadly discussed; 2) involves training of the academic staff; 3) asks seeing curricula in a real systemic way placing each course within the context of the broader whole.

How can a transition take place at community level and what is the role of individuals? How can cultural knowledge or values be produced, co-produced and represented? How can culturally sensitive and embedded approaches be promoted in planning, cultural or place mapping, and through artistic and/or planning practices?

INTRODUCTION Few can have fully foreseen the success of the idea of ‘Sustainable Development’ whe... more INTRODUCTION Few can have fully foreseen the success of the idea of ‘Sustainable Development’ when it was introduced to a broad global audience in 1987 by the Brundtland report ‘Our Common Future’. Almost 30 years later, the idea is still increasingly being presented as a pathway to all that is good and desirable in society, widely adopted and frequently called-in-aid. Sustainability is essentially about the future(s) we want. This brings questions about the possible trajectories for a different future(s) and development of humanity. What can be achieved? How to surmount conflicts among competing values? What kind of political subject could emerge capable of making the decisions needed to ensure a better future? How to initiate and manage the sustainability transformation, both locally and globally? In order to meet many urgent challenges of the present, new modes of thinking and acting are required. It is increasingly agreed that sustainable development as incremental change is not sufficient, but a fundamental transformation to sustainability that concern the human systems as whole, is needed. This would mean a turning point for the contemporary humanity as a whole - a quest for a paradigm based on the choice of life lived humanly within the planetary boundaries not merely in physical sense, but even more in social, political and spiritual sense. This calls, in turn, for a better understanding of the role of culture in striving towards and achieving sustainability.
