Microgrippers are devices that have found applications in various fields of research and industry... more Microgrippers are devices that have found applications in various fields of research and industry. They are driven by various actuation methods. In this article, an electrothermal rotary actuator recently proposed in the literature is explored to obtain a novel microgripper design (Model 1). In addition, the use of the rotary actuator as part of the chevron actuated microgrippers (Model 2) is also discussed. The theoretical analysis of the rotary actuator is supported by an equivalent U-shaped-like microactuator. The small error values validate the approximation used. Numerical modeling is performed with ANSYSTM (Student version 2022, ANSYS, PA, USA). A comparison of theoretical and numerical results provides acceptable error values. The total inter-jaw displacement values obtained for models 1 and 2 are 12.28 μm and 21.2 μm, respectively, and the reaction force is 8.96 μN and 34.2 μN, respectively. The performance parameters of both microgrippers could make their use feasible for d...

For electrical power quality studies, monitoring equipment was initially installed at the Point of common coupling, to obtain the maximum average values of the total distortion harmonics of voltage and current. This monitoring is important, due to these signals must meet the standards established by regulatory organizations, to improve the energy quality, reduce costs and to avoid electric equipment’s failures. It can be determined that the main contributions to these distortions are third, fifth and seventh harmonics. The time of transfer given by the automatic transfer equipment, was measured when failures in the network occurred. It can be said that all measurement satisfies the requirements of network code. Some recommendations are given to improve the performance of the system.

This procedure is not common in this type of system and requires paying primary attention to the characteristics of the electrical network for its application. The distribution circuits discussed here have their own power substation with different voltage levels. The information obtained from a state estimator, the contingency conditions, the electrical parameters of impedances and network configuration allow to carry out the simulation of the load transfer with the Alternative Transients Program software. From the simulation it is shown that load transfer without interruption is possible as long as certain operating conditions are met in the power and distribution networks. The dependence of the transfer on the voltage levels, angular phase shift of voltages and strength of the electrical network is shown, represented by its thevenin impedance at the interconnect...

In order to reduce fabrication costs, conventional piezoelectric buzzers are used that are easily found in the market at very low cost. Polylactic Acid (PLA) was chosen as the structural material for the design of the mechanisms of the microgripper, the choice of this material considerably reduces the total implementation cost. The originality of this work resides in the material used and in the stacked piezoelectric actuator. The main contribution is the demonstration of a design methodology that implements prototype compliance mechanisms at millimeter scale for validation purposes before proceeding to the fabrication in micrometric scale. Even so, the system in mm scale can also be used for micromanipulation due to the range of its microgripper jaws’ aperture and its reliability. ANSYSTM was used as the software tool for simulation.

In this work, a positioning support for patch antennas was designed in order to know its effect over the patch antenna's performance. It is well-known that fabrication process of the antenna produces a shift in its frequency response, but there was not found information about the effect of the structural support. Simulations to known this effect were performed considering two types of material for the structural support. A patch antenna, designed for Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz), was used to analyze this effect.

This article documents the design, manufacture, and testing of a silicon inertial optical sensor ... more This article documents the design, manufacture, and testing of a silicon inertial optical sensor for low-frequency (lower than 2 kHz) applications. Three accelerometer designs optimized by parameterization using Finite Element Analysis were considered. The accelerometers were manufactured and the one with the highest performance at low frequency was chosen for testing, which was attached to a steel package. The feasibility of using probes, based on micro-machined sensing elements, to measure mechanical vibrations with high resolution was also studied. The detection is performed with an air interferometer, eliminating the need for electric signals that are susceptible to electromagnetic interference and large temperature variations. From the fabrication technology using only a silicon wafer with both sides etched, the frequency response of the sensor, temperature operation (higher than 85 °C) and with a resolution of 17.5 nm, it was concluded that is achievable and feasible to design...

A theoretical approach and numerical characterization of the modified microactuator were performed. Its performance was compared to a similar microactuator with equal beam widths, and a V-shaped microactuator. The proposed microactuator, fed at 2 V, compared to the V-shaped actuator, showed a 370.48% increase in force, but a 29.8% decrease in displacement. The equivalent von Mises stress level increased (until 74.2 MPa), but was below the silicon ultimate stress. When the modified microactuator was applied to the proposed microgripper, compared to the case using a V-shaped actuator, the displacement between the jaws increased from 0.85 µm to 4.85 µm, the force from 42.11 mN to 73.61 mN, and the natural frequency from 11.36 kHz to 37.99 kHz; although the temperature increased, on average, from 42 °C up to 73 °C, it is not a critical value ...
