This in turn creates cognitive overload, which narrows the user's focus to a few select items. In the context of e-learning, we translated this aspect as the learner's demand for a system that facilitates the retrieval of learning content – one in which the representation is easy to read and understand. We hypothesized that the representation of content in an e-learning system's design is an important antecedent for learner preferences. The aspects of isolation and distinctiveness were incorporated into the design of e-learning representation as an attempt to promote student cognition. Following its development, the model was empirically validated by conducting a survey of 300 university students. We found that isolation and distinctiveness in the design elements appeared to facilitate the ability of students to read and remember online learning content. This in turn was found to drive user preferences for using e-learning systems. The findings provide designers with managerial insights for enticing learners to continue using e-learning systems.

There are several factors that need to be considered while developing or implementing E-learning environment. This paper is intended to identify and measure e-learning critical factors as perceived by instructors. In line with the literature, five factors were identified and measured, namely instructor self efficacy, student perceived benefits, instructor attitude towards information technologies used in e-e-learning, instructor attitude towards the technical support of e-learning tools, and e-learning acceptance and usage by instructors. A sample of 606 instructors was used to validate the proposed e-learning factors. The results revealed that 40% of the instructors perceived technical support as the most critical factor in e-learning success. The instructor self efficacy was viewed as the most critical factor by 30% of the participants, while 31% viewed it as the third most crit...

Dynamic and random variations in part demands can negatively impact cell performance by creating unstable machine utilizations. The purpose of this paper is to introduce and illustrate an interactive cell formation method that can be used to design ` ̄exible' cells. Flexibility in this context refers to routing ̄exibility (i.e., the ability for the cellular system to process parts within multiple cells) and demand ̄exibility (i.e., the ability of the cell system to respond quickly to changes in part demand and part mix). Through an experimental analysis using multiple data sets, we also validate the procedure and provide guidelines for parameter settings depending upon the type of ̄exibility of interest to the user. Finally, trade-o€s and interdependences between alternative ty...

It provides an exploratory analysis of surveying 524 firms in Abu Dhabi. In an attempt to specify the factors that encourage/deter e-commerce adoption by businesses, 14 factors (8 internal and 6 external) were surveyed. The results indicated that most of the firms were either at the first or second stage on the e-commerce 5-stage adoption ladder. This indicated that the e-commerce adoption is not matching and far less than the IT readiness of both the firms and the country.

Yet, factors affecting smart classroom adoption have not been sufficiently explored. Based on the innovation diffusion theory and external pressures, the present study developed a model to investigate the main drivers of smart classroom adoption.Design/methodology/approachSEM-AMOS was used to analyse the data collected from a sample of 1,208 educators.FindingsThe findings revealed that innovation diffusion theory and external pressures provide an appropriate model for understanding smart classroom adoption.Practical implicationsThe findings offer important implications for higher education institutions, IT managers, and are likely to stimulate further research in the area of smart classrooms.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first study that used innovation diffusion theory external pressures to understanding smart classroom adoption.

However, only a small amount of data is available regarding m-government implementation in developing countries and users’ behavioural intentions (BIs) with respect to the utilization of such services. To address this issue, this study attempts to identify factors that affect m-government acceptance among citizens of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This study aims to examine the relationships between m-government service characteristics and m-government technology characteristics by analysing their perceived ease-of-use, perceived usefulness, user attitudes towards m-government usage and corresponding BIs with respect to utilization of m-government services. Design/methodology/approach This study is based on a quantitative survey conducted among 3...

The interest in using the Web as a competitive weapon by individuals, businesses, and governments is increasing as well. Little has addressed the applicability and implementation of several published website evaluation criteria. This work is an attempt to develop a comprehensive set of evaluation criteria for general websites in line with international standards for website design. The proposed evaluation criteria are used to analyze the top 10 websites in UAE in order to measure their compliance with the developed criteria. The proposed criteria can be used as a benchmark of website quality and compliance.
