The victims come from various countries, where torture practices exist or have existed, and request international protection. Dilemmas arise from the possibility of professionals finding themselves in front of clients who, during assessment, have doubts about the client's status as victim, and who develop suspicions that they may be a perpetrator. The centre may decide to exclude them from treatment at some point to prevent international protection from contributing to impunity for any crimes they may have committed. However, the decision to exclude them makes it necessary to examine and review the admissibility criteria in trying to control the risks of committing injustices. Resolving the dilemmas identified in the article involves a process of discernment that guarantees the clients’ rights, the safety and certainty of professional procedure...

It includes a summary of the reparations programmes implemented in Chile from 1990 to 2004, to redress the human rights violations suffered by victims of Pinochet’s dictatorship (1973–1990). The Health Programme was created in 1991 and reinforced by law in 2004. It has been the principal reparation measure for victims of human rights violations adopted in Chile, including third-generation relatives. This article puts them in context and assesses achievements and challenges of the reparations programme.

It examines three forms of repression—torture, disappearance, and death—and the consequences these have had for victims and family members. Damage to victims is conceptualized in terms of “extreme traumatization,” and psychotherapeutic work with the victims has required radical rethinking of the nature of the therapeutic bond that is necessary with these patients. Grief processes have special relevance in this work, as does the relationship between the personal experience of repression and the sociopolitical context. An illustrative case study of therapy with a torture victim is presented. Finally, the article emphasizes the importance of societal reparation for the psychological recovery of the victims and the consolidation of a stable democracy in Chile.

Psychologists came up with the idea to have patients write down their testimony as a central element of their therapy. Patients embraced this. The shame and rage that was eating away at them could be channeled toward denouncing what had happened and demanding justice. Things changed in the 1980s: the public began to know about what was going on and the detainees’ stories found their way into the press. This »modified the place of denuncia and made the therapeutic process of giving testimony less necessary.« The last part of the work, shows the new social purpose written testimonies took on in the changing political climate of the 1980’s.
