In this work, we report the location of Na, K, Ca, Mg and Fe biominerals in Sarcocornia pruinosa (Chenopodiacaeae), a halophyte species growing in the estuarine area of Río Tinto, an extreme acidic environment. The estuarine soils of the Tinto basin are characterized by slightly acidic pH and high concentrations of ions. They are exposed to Atlantic Ocean tides that contribute to the increase in pH, Na and Mg concentrations. The aim of this work was to characterize the elemental composition and to identify the biominerals detected in cell tissues of S. pruinosa. Analytical techniques, such as ICP-MS (Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry), XRD and microscopy such as OM (optical microscopy) with histochemical staining, SEM and TEM (scanning and transmission electronic microscopy) coupled with EDX (energy dispersive X-ray) were carried out to analyze the plant tissues of S....

This diploid taxon is known from the islands of Sicily and Sardinia and from circum-Mediterranean territories (from North Africa to the Anatolian Peninsula in Turkey and as far as the Persian Gulf on the Asian continent). The distinctive macro-, micromorphological and chorological features of this taxon are given.

It has an alpine orogeny and is located in the centre of the peninsula running northeast-southwest in its eastern part (Ayllon and Guadarrama ranges), and east-west in its western part (Guadarrama, Gredos and Estrela ranges). The whole system comprises a continuous series of smaller mountain ranges, including valleys and various natural areas. It occupies a vast territory from the middle of Portugal (Serra da Estrela) to the Sierra de Ayllon range in the east, and acts as a natural division of the Castilian central plateau, separating the northern plateau (Castile and Leon) from the southern plateau (Madrid, Castile-La Mancha and Extremadura). It generally represents the watershed between two of the most important Iberian rivers: the Duero and the Tagus. The highest point of the whole Iberian Central Range is the Almanzor Peak (2592 m) in the centra...

Salicornia patula Duval-Jouve is a common euhalophyte from saline Mediterranean territories (Spain, Portugal, France, and Italy). In the present work we quantified for the first time the bioactive compounds in S. patula (total phenolic compounds and fatty acids), from Iberian Peninsula localities: littoral-coastal Tinto River basin areas (southwest Spain, the Huelva province), and mainland continental territories (northwest and central Spain, the Valladolid and Madrid provinces). Five phenolic acids including caffeic, coumaric, veratric, salicylic, and transcinnamic have been found with differences between mainland and coastal saltmarshes. S. patula contain four flavonoids: quercetin-3-O-rutinoside, kaempferol/luteolin, apigenin 7-glucoside, and pelargonidin-3-O-rutinoside. These last two glycosylated compounds are described for the first time in this genus of Ch...

The surface waters of the haloalkaline Mono Lake (CA, USA) are alkaline but, in contrast to its bottom waters, do not present high salinity. We have studied the microbiota present in the shoreline sediments of Mono Lake using next-generation sequencing techniques. The statistical indexes showed that Bacteria had a higher richness, diversity and evenness compared to Archaea. 17 phyla and 8 "candidate divisions", were identified among the Bacteria, with a predominance of the phyla Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes. Among the Proteobacteria, there was a notable presence of Rhodoplanes and a high diversity of sulfate-reducing (SRB) Deltaproteobacteria, in accordance with the high sulfate-reducing activity detected in soda l...

Research paper thumbnail of Silicon induced Fe deficiency affects Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn distribution in rice (Oryza sativa L.) growth in calcareous conditions

Plant physiology and biochemistry : PPB, 2018

However in calcareous conditions, the Si effect on Fe acquisition and distribution is still unknown. In this work, the effect of Si on Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn distribution was studied in rice (Strategy 2 species) under Fe sufficiency and deficiency. Plants (+Si or-Si) were grown initially with Fe, and then Fe was removed from the nutrient solution. The plants were then analysed using a combined approach including LA-ICP-MS images for each element of interest, the analysis of the Fe and Si concentration at different cell layers of root and leaf cross sections by SEM-EDX, and determining the apoplastic Fe, total micronutrient concentration and oxidative stress indexes. A different Si effect was observed depending on plant Fe status. Under Fe sufficiency, Si supply increased Fe root plaque formation, decreasing Fe concentration inside the root and increasing the...
