Some retrospective studies have suggested a beneficial influence of angiotensin-converting enzyme... more Some retrospective studies have suggested a beneficial influence of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors on the progression of IgA nephropathy (IgAN), but prospective and controlled studies demonstrating this effect are lacking. Forty-four patients with biopsy-proven IgAN, proteinuria > or = 0.5 g/d, and serum creatinine (SCr) < or = 1.5 mg/dl were randomly assigned either to receive enalapril (n = 23) or to a control group (n = 21) in whom BP was controlled with antihypertensives other than ACE inhibitors. Primary outcome was renal survival estimated by a 50% increase in baseline SCr. Secondary outcomes were the presence of a SCr > 1.5 mg/dl at the last visit and the evolution of proteinuria. Baseline clinical findings were similar at baseline between enalapril-treated and control group, and there were no differences in BP control during follow-up. Mean follow-up was 78 +/- 37 mo in the enalapril group and 74 +/- 36 mo in the control group. Three patients (13%) in the enalapril group and 12 (57%) in the control group reached the primary end point (P < 0.05). Background: Proteinuria is a recognized complication of obesity, but no study has investigated th... more Background: Proteinuria is a recognized complication of obesity, but no study has investigated the effect of weight loss in overweight patients with chronic proteinuric nephropathies of different causes. Methods: We randomly assigned (in a 2:1 ratio) 30 overweight patients (body mass index [BMI] > 27 kg/m 2 ) with diabetic and nondiabetic proteinuric nephropathies to either follow a low-calorie normoproteinic diet or maintain their usual dietary intake for 5 months. The primary outcome was change in urinary protein excretion. Secondary outcomes were changes in renal function (serum creatinine level and Cockcroft-Gault creatinine clearance) and lipid profile. Results: Patients in the diet group showed a significant decrease in body weight and BMI, whereas patients in the control group showed a significant increase in body weight and BMI (between-group comparison, P < 0.05). Mean weight loss in the diet group was 4.1% ؎ 3%, and 14 of 20 patients in this group lost more than 3%. Proteinuria decreased by 31.2% ؎ 37% in the diet group (from protein of 2.8 ؎ 1.4 to 1.9 ؎ 1.4 g/24 h; P < 0.005), whereas it tended to increase in the control group (between-group comparison, P < 0.05). Changes in renal function did not differ significantly between groups, although renal function remained stable in the diet group and showed significant worsening in the control group. Serum triglyceride levels remained stable in the diet group and tended to increase in the control group (between-group comparison, P < 0.05). We report a first-principles molecular dynamics study of the reentering behavior that has been re... more We report a first-principles molecular dynamics study of the reentering behavior that has been recently observed experimentally in the melting line of bcc sodium [Gregoryanz et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 185502 (2005)10.1103/PhysRevLett.94.185502]. Our results show the liquid phase to be more compressible than the solid phase, and to remain so at high pressures, eventually becoming denser than the solid phase and hence causing the change of slope in the melting line from positive to negative. The maximum of the melting line thus occurs without any accompanying first-order liquid-liquid phase transition.

We report on an artificial nanofabricated motor in which one short carbon nanotube moves relative to another coaxial nanotube. A cargo is attached to an ablated outer wall of a multiwalled carbon nanotube that can rotate and/or translate along the inner nanotube. The motion is actuated by imposing a thermal gradient along the nanotube, which allows for subnanometer displacements, as opposed to an electromigration or random walk effect.

These studies have been carried out using a total-energy, non-orthogonal, tight-binding parametrisation which is shown to provide results in good agreement both with calculations using higher levels of theory and the available experimental data. Our results predict that of all types of nanotubes considered, carbon nanotubes have the highest Young’s modulus. We have considered tubes of different diameters, ranging from 0.5 to 2 nm, and find that in the limit of large diameters the mechanical properties of nanotubes approach those of the corresponding flat graphene-like sheets.

Our calculations predict that carbon nanotubes have a higher Young modulus than any of the studied composite nanotubes, and of the same order as that found for defect-free graphene sheets. We obtain good agreement with the available experimental results.

These periodic sheets can be rolled so as to generate nanotubes of different diameter and chirality. We demonstrate that these sheets and tubes are metastable and more favorable than C60, and it is also shown that their mechanical properties are similar to those of graphene. Density of states calculations of all structures revealed an intrinsic metallic behavior, independent of orientation, tube diameter, and chirality.
