Some Orthoptera species have been studied for their large amounts of phenolic compounds and bioactive potential. This work focused on Pterophylla beltrani Bolívar & Bolívar as a source of compounds with bioactive potential. Concentrated ethanolic extract of P. beltrani was evaluated for antioxidant effects, protective potential of proteins against free radicals, and antimicrobial effects and was analyzed for tentative identification of metabolites. The extract showed total phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity. The antibacterial effect was greatest in Bacillus subtilis Cohn. An antifungal assay showed no inhibition of mycelial growth. No protective effect against degradation of proteins by free radicals was observed. Tandem mass spectrometry enabled tentative identification of derivatives of fatty acids, amino acid derivatives, alkaloids, phenolic compounds, terpenoids, piranocumarins, and fatty amides in the extract. Results highlight P. beltrani as a source of metabolites with bioactive potential for future applications.

In two major mountains of northeastern Mexico: Cerro El Potosí (in Southern Nuevo León) and Peña Nevada (in Southern Tamaulipas), 45 spider communities were studied. Human activity, vegetation type, disturbance, livestock, and land degradation were measured. As a hypothesis, it was anticipated finding low spider diversity in highly degraded sites. 541 individuals from 23 families were found. The most abundant families were Lycosidae, Anyphaenidae and Gnaphosidae. Spider species distribution was highly associated with presence of leaf-litter. Spider diversity was unrelated to elevation or disturbance. Pardosa sp. was the most abundant and dominant at well-preserved sites. Lycosidae, Thomisidae and Pholcidae were more abundant in areas with greater human intervention. This study in two important forest zones in northeastern Mexico will be a guide for future research on biodiversity on forest ecosystems and influence of environmental variation and disturbance.

Here we analyze different initiatives for conservation, their extension and vegetation representativeness in Oaxaca, until 2008. We compiled different initiatives from governmental, non-governmental, and academic and private institutions and analyzed their geographic overlap. Conservation initiatives were classified in three groups: two initiatives with support and recognition of the Mexican government (official conservation initiatives) and a third one stemming from indigenous communities known as voluntarily preserved areas. The results showed that the official conservation initiatives covered approximately 40 % of Oaxaca, showing 19 % of overlap. Official conservation initiatives adequately represented pine-oak forests; nonetheless, open forests, with secondary vegetation of shrubs and herbs are poorly represented. The conservation initiative showing the highest extension were communities supported by the Payment for Environmental Services Program, while the voluntarily preserved areas had the smallest extension in Oaxaca.

The aim of this study was to determine the structure, composition and diversity of the urban trees of Linares, Nuevo León. Dasometric information was collected from urban green areas and public parks, counting 6 ridges, 14 parks and 25 public spaces with a total area of 273 904 m 2. The variables of diameter (d 1.30), total height (h) and diameter of the crown (d crown) were recorded. The density of plant species by urban green area and the total number of species was calculated. Diversity was assessed using the Shannon-Weiner and Margalef indices. The total number of trees registered was 2 066 belonging to 41 species, 34 genera and 25 families. The most representative was Fabaceae with six species; Fraxinus americana (ash) is outstanding from the ecological point of view, with 25.67 N ha-1 , which represents 34.03 % of total abundance and 1 225.38 m 2 ha-1 which is equivalent to 46.93 % of dominance and 30.91 % of IVI, followed by Quercus virginiana with 22.46 % and Washingtonia robusta with 11.56 %. The Shannon-Weiner Index recorded H'= 1.99 and H' max = 3.17, and the Margalef Index D Mg = 5.24. It is concluded that the urban trees described here are mainly composed of introduced species, the most important of which is ash.

Materials and methods: The antinociceptive activity was tested using chemical- and heat-induced nociception models. The anti-inflammatory activity was tested using carrageenan-induced edema and inflammatory cytokines were measured. Results: EAOr reduced the licking time on the second phase of the formalin test (100 and 177 mg/kg). The antinociception of EAOr was prevented by L-NAME (10 mg/kg), 1H-[1, 2, 4]-oxadiazolo [4, 3-a]-quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ, 0.1 mg/kg), glibenclamide (10 mg/kg) and bicuculline (1 mg/kg), but not by naloxone (2 mg/kg). Also, EAOr decreased licking time in capsaicin induced-nociception. EAOr did not have effect on withdrawal latency in tail-flick test. Carrageenan-induced paw edema was reduced by EAOr, and TNF-α and IL-1β levels were reduced in mice treated with EAOr by 72.2 and 32.8%, respectively. Furthermore, EAOr did not present side effects as sedation nor gastric injury. Chemical analysis of this fraction showed the presence of glycosylated quercetin derivatives such as quercetin glucoside and quercetin rhamnoside in a 2.5% concentration. Conclusion: This study demonstrates antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effect of an organic fraction of O. rosea and its possible interaction with the NO-cGMP-K+ channels and GABAergic system and thus, it could be considered a therapeutic alternative.
