Musealisation in rural areas in Romania by Maria Tămăşan
The latest trends in European cultural tourism focus on putting to good use the existing local po... more The latest trends in European cultural tourism focus on putting to good use the existing local potentialities. Across Arad County, Romania, there are numerous historical and archaeological remains, the oldest dating from the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC. Most of these are found in rural areas, but are not commonly known, not advertised and have no proper monument protection. Usually, the local community does not have the means, the awareness and real interest to preserve these ruins due to several factors of which we can list: poverty, low standard of education, the subsistence economy based on agriculture, lack of information, depopulation of rural areas as a result of massive migration to the city etc. Nevertheless, archaeological sites can become a strategic trigger for local cultural and economic development, if, on regional scale, some input in their preservation and valorisation is enabled. In this manner, cultural tourism can develop, local economy will be enhanced and awareness towards built heritage will increase, ensuring local tradition and culture. In this context, our research has begun by identifying a network of archaeological sites within the villages in Arad County. For some of these we have conceived activation strategies within an ecological approach beside musealisation. The present study is part of this undertaking and it focuses on one less known, but well-preserved archaeological site in the village of Galşa. The historical and archaeological remains consist of a well preserved medieval stone chapel. We aim to find viable means of rehabilitation and valorisation of the cultural heritage, through environmental-friendly interventions. Thus, the ruin is given a new utility which responds to some social and economic local needs.

There are numerous historical and archaeological remains across Arad County, the oldest dating from the Middle Palaeolithic. Most of them are settled in rural areas, not commonly known, not advertised and have no proper monument protection. Giving these monuments a higher profile would catalyse cultural tourism. The purpose of this study is to find viable means of rehabilitation, re-use and valorisation of this cultural heritage, through environmental-friendly interventions on archaeological sites in certain rural areas. Our aim is to implement the innovative concept of musealisation, in order to create a complex and sustainable tourist itinerary, which combines the activity of visiting with learning and experiencing the local traditions. The historical and archaeological remains are closely linked to the evolution of the nearby village. If understood from a phenomenological perspective, these monuments create a narrative web about life standards, economy, defence, specific crafting and building technology. These tourist attractions are intended to become part of a cross-border bicycle itinerary along the Mureş River, an environmental friendly way of travel. Former multidisciplinary studies performed by architects, historians, sociologists, archaeologists, ethnologists and museum workers have contributed with their expertise to attaining important objectives of the research: conservation and valorisation of rural historical heritage of Arad County, increasing the tourist attractiveness of the county, outlining the local specificity by preserving and revitalizing local traditions and endangered handicrafts. The proposals are submitted to the Strategy for Tourist Development for Arad County, elaborated in 2011 by CADI (The Analysis for Institutional Development Centre - Bucharest) and approved by the County Council. Our intention is to emphasize the opportunity represented by architectural and archaeological remains within their context, as resources for rural tourism in Arad County.

In this respect, this paper describes the phases of an environmental-friendly intervention on an archaeological site near the village Şiria, Arad County, as case study, the expected results and the steps which must be taken in order to implement the proposal. The final aim is to create a complex and sustainable tourist attraction through environmental-friendly musealisation, and to integrate it in the already known, but poorly promoted tourist itinerary, known as The Wine Path – first documented in the 9th century. The proposed design reflects our sustainable approach by combining local materials with non-invasive structural solutions and efficient solar technologies. The purpose of this approach is to reduce maintenance costs of the building to nearly 0 and to extend the visiting time of the archaeological site during the entire year whatever the weather or season. The proposals are to be submitted to the County Council, having issued the Strategy for Tourist Development for Arad County, elaborated in 2011 by The Analysis for Institutional Development Centre - Bucharest.

archaeological excavations.During 2022, two small trenches were excavated, targeting the buildings near the
monument. The trenches were located according to geophysical measurements, digital elevation model and on
site observations. The investigations had the limited aim of identifying some of the buildings in the immediate
vicinity of the furnace, which are also illustrated on the Franciscan Topographical Survey. Only in one trench, S1,
was the stated objective achieved, locating a building with stone foundations and walls built of stone and brick.

Others, like the commune Vladimirescu, are still functioning independently, but their inclusion within the administrative territory of Arad is a foreseeable scenario. Therefore, it is compulsory to take into account these rural areas, when elaborating strategies for the cultural development of the city. Arad will extend its range of cultural destinations and the villages will preserve their identity as part of the tourist itinerary. Vladimirescu distinguishes itself due to the archaeological findings on its territory, including the ruins of a Romanesque basilica, within a 15th century enclosure. The study proposes the integration of Vladimirescu in the cultural tourist itinerary of Arad, by musealisation of this archaeological site and environmental-friendly interventions which are to create a complex and sustainable cultural network and assign value to local traditions. Our proposal continues the initiatives of The Museum Complex of Arad to preserve and promote these monuments. Our objective is to strengthen the connection between Arad and Vladimirescu through valorising the cultural heritage and to emphasize the opportunity represented by architectural and archaeological remains within their context, as resources for cultural tourism in Arad.
