We hypothesized that the change came along with a set of challenges that were partly similar, partly different around the world. Challenges were met with either timid or firm immediate efforts of applying approaches, strategies and techniques that could make teaching an effective process, even under the new circumstances. The aims of the paper are to provide insights into the challenges online teaching faced during the Covid-19 pandemic in countries around the world, to identify the (applied or suggested) solutions for diverse challenges and similarities or differences between challenges/solutions. In our research, we used a qualitative method based on a purposeful sampling technique and collected data from the research work of scholars in countries from the six inhabited continents. Results confirmed our hypotheses. Although we had glimpses of the world on...

Linguistic stylistics regards language from the perspective of the subjectivity that embellishes its use. Pragmatics is, in its turn, concerned with subjectivity in language; in this case, however, subjectivity is not reduced only to the mere expression of affectivity, but it also encloses all the elements in a spoken language used by people to meet their specific activities. That is why the research in the field of stylistics comprises all linguistic means of expression of subjectivity (phonetic, morphological, syntactic, lexical, semantic means), while pragmatic research focuses on the speakers' usage of language depending on their mood, on the time and place of the utterance and on any other matters that may influence the process of communication. Deixis is one of the pragmatic elements that help granting a meaning to the speakers' utterances in a given context, indicating at the same time their position towards themselves, towards the message and the interlocutor, from whom they require a certain action/expect a certain reaction.

Individuals and nations are interested in defining themselves, in finding similarities and differences with the others around. The paper is an empirical study on the radiants of meaning in constructing Romanian national identity in young adults from “Vasile Alecsandri” University of Bacău. It is following closely Donald Carnbaugh`s classification of radiants of meaning in cultural discourse (2007). It is also meant to put to test the conception regarding national identity as developed by Wodak, Cillia, Liebhart, and Reisigl (2009) and to discuss outcomes for Romanian national identity images. The outcomes of the quantitative study resulted from word/phrase completion tasks and, in the absence of a well-defined Social Identity Theory of National Identity, the study draws on social identity approach, having as framework the Social Identity Theory and the Self-categorization Theory. The core components of these theories help us identify radiants of meaning in the images of national identity. By examining them, we notice their cognitive, behavioural, ethnic, cultural, evaluative and affective components that trigger equivalent meanings and content, in a fully integrated view on the national identity.

Starting from the idea that advertising is an indicator of attitudes, the paper analyses the changing attitudes of the Americans. It tries to depict the cultural changes of the American society (from 1900’s to the XXIst century) and the way in which these changes are reflected in the language used in the catchy slogans and titles for Coca-Cola.

Starting from this idea and having in view the fact that, in the last decades, Gypsies have become a frequent topic of the news (at least) in Europe, the present paper has two aims: (1) to analyse the manner in which Gypsies’ marginality (which seems to be perennial) is linguistically constructed in some English newspapers headlines and (2) to depict the influence of these headlines upon newspaper readers’ beliefs regarding Gypsies. The research tools used included an analysis of some newspapers headlines and a survey based on these headlines.

People negotiate in all areas of social life (in the family, at work, in the street, in shops, in a company, in a political party, between states, etc.) whenever they seek to resolve differences of opinion or to get what they want. Any kind of negotiation starts from a series of basic conditions (the interdependence of the parties engaged in negotiations, the existence of some differences of opinion, the parties' joint work to achieve a mutually beneficial agreement). At the same time, any negotiation takes place in a certain setting, bordered by the object of negotiation, its aims and stakes, the place and time of its deployment. The media, be they written or audio-visual, offer their own representation of the world, which, though sometimes quite far from reality, is central to what ultimately comes to represent people’s social realities. Throughout history the media depicted women and minorities in stereotypical ways. In response to that, these groups tried to find their own ways of self-representation. Starting from social representations theory and social identity theory, this paper seeks to analyse the manner in which American black women present themselves in their own media through the titles used in ”Essence”, an American magazine dedicated exclusively to black women.

Constituting themselves as social practices (with a strong social impact on people's everyday life) jokes were (and still are) an expression of people's joy of life in happy times and a means of escaping the harsh reality in difficult times. Our paper has in view the latter context that triggers humour, analysing a set of jokes that used to be (more or less secretly) told during the communist regime in Romania. They are culture-specific jokes, highlighting the absurdities of Romania's political situation under the communist government, laughing at Ceauşescu (the Romanian communist dictator), his family and staff and, at the same time, making (bitter) fun of the disastrous Romanian people's life which was triggered by the strict communist laws and fixed ideas. Thus, for the purpose of our study, we have referred to: a) jokes that reflect the Romanian people's frustrations in everyday life; b) jokes that reflect people's attitude of disgust against their leader; c) jokes that reflect people's bitter disappointment and hopelessness; d) jokes that make fun of Nicolae and Elena Ceauşescu and their staff; d) jokes that make fun of the communist regime; e) jokes that underline the (radical) solutions people dreamt of for solving their problems. The jokes about communism represent a way in which the Romanians tried to overcome the difficulties of the times, remaining united as a nation, as the humour in this case played upon the dichotomy solidarity/exclusion: people laughed together (solidarity) at Ceauşescu and his regime (exclusion). In communist times, joking about the social and political situation in the country was one of the few manners in which people could distinguish/separate themselves from the grotesque image and absurd ideas of their leader. The paper tries to depict the manner in which these jokes (which appeared as a result of the people's need to express their true feelings about the communists and their leaders) managed to ensure the Romanians' spiritual survival in a rigid regime which neither appreciated nor encouraged humour. Through the pragma-linguistic and stylistic analysis offered we intend to render the real meaning of these jokes in their cultural and social context, as well as their influence in interpersonal relationships.
