Research paper thumbnail of The impact of particle-bound cadmium on bioavailability and bioaccumulation: A pragmatic approach

Therefore, simple and innovative methodologies should be tested as analogues for natural sediments. Among them, a diverse selection of artificial particles with well-defined surface properties, in the presence and absence of commercially available humic acids, has been proposed and used to investigate the bioavailability of several organic pollutants. For this work, this model was applied to investigate the uptake and accumulation of cadmium by the freshwater oligochaete Lumbriculus variegatus. The results showed that the uptake of the metal depended on the free dissolved Cd(II) species, while the contribution from the particles was negligible. Thus, the extent of cadmium bioaccumulated from each test system could be predicted as a function of the rate of absorption of the free dissolved Cd(II) species. These species were calculated either from the particle-water partition coefficients, or by using the MINEQL+ computer program. In general, the estimated accumulation levels were in good agreement with the experimental results.

The possible interferences between them and the selectivity of the process were studied working with mixtures of these two ions in adsorption processes. From the analysis of the results it can be inferred that the adsorption of lead is not affected by the presence of copper, since no changes in its adsorption capacity are observed as the concentration of the other ion changes. Copper adsorption is not affected by the presence of lead up to a copper level of 130 mg / L. For higher concentrations of copper, the antagonistic competition of Pb is manifested. From the kinetic studies performed at an equimolar concentration of Pb (400 mg / L) and Cu (130 mg / L), it was observed that the presence of copper increases the time required to reach the equilibrium of lead adsorption, but its adsorption capacity is unchanged. For the adsorption of copper...

Research paper thumbnail of Assessment of the acute toxicity of the organochlorine pesticide endosulfan in Cichlasoma dimerus (Teleostei, Perciformes)

The organochlorine insecticide endosulfan (ES) is widely used despite its high toxicity to fish (... more The organochlorine insecticide endosulfan (ES) is widely used despite its high toxicity to fish (96-h LC(50) median value of 2.6 μg L(-1)). This study aimed to assess the acute toxicity, histological and physiological parameters after exposure to 0; 0.25; 1; 2; 3; 4 and 16 μg L(-1) ES for 96 h under semi-static conditions in a freshwater perciform fish, Cichlasoma dimerus. Prior to death, fish exhibited behavior indicative of neurotoxicity. No difference was found in brain AChE activity. A decrease in erythrocyte mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration in exposed fish suggests a state of anemia. Histological alterations observed in exposed fish included hyperplasia of the interlamellar epithelium, blood congestion in secondary lamellae, and mucous cells hyperplasia and hypertrophy in gills; pycnotic nuclei and hydropic degeneration in liver; testicular damage. These moderate pathological responses in major organs could become crucial during reproduction and under prolonged exposure periods.

One of these proposals was a collaborative project between UBA and the National University of General Sarmiento. Based on the hypothesis that students´ voluntary involvement in social concerns improves their attitudes towards themselves and learning, the aim was to focus on the development of social and professional skills by implementing an interdisciplinary work for water quality and supply assessment in low-income homes from a southern district of Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area. Eighteen volunteers -Chemical and Civil Engineering students- were recruited during August-December 2016. Tasks were distributed according to their interests: surveys making, sampling, lab analysis, infrastructure checking, etc. Volunteers were surveyed in social involvement, lab skills, data compilation and analysis, leading to a f...
