People elaborate on these through their interactions as social subjects. In this sense, social representations about these models can maintain their validity, with greater or lesser legitimacy. Based on a qualitative review, we analyze the characteristics of the leading models and approaches proposed by various authors in the last two decades, linking them with social representations as discursive production and with the social practices of a given context that is simultaneously constructed. We conclude that this critical review leads to a rethink of social representations, professional practices, and discursive crossings from the different models and approaches to disability. Finally, we reflect on how, when presented as hegemonic and totalizing representations, models can deprive the subject with a disability of agency, preventing him/her/them from critically reflecting, rethinking, and representing him/her/them, as well as from making decisions based on his/her subjectivity expressed in everyday life.

Prior qualitative studies suggest that weight loss patients have complicated relationships with both self and weight, with significant emotional and psychological implications. But how do patients themselves understand the trajectories of their weight gain as related to intrinsic versus extrinsic factors? A qualitative analysis examined the aspects involved in the construction of higher body weight from the perspectives and life experiences of Brazilian women who underwent bariatric surgery, considering that Brazil has previously been reported as a highly anti-fat society. Individual, semi-structured interviews were conducted with thirty women (15 aged 33-59 and 15 aged 63-72). Data were analyzed identifying the regular, expressive, and meaningful significance units identified through the interviews. Although it was expected that different life events were reported as crucial to the perceived aetiology of individual weight gain stories, the participants reported that the emotional aspects had more impact. The extremely high value attached to having a particular body weight negatively influenced the participants' concept of identity and harmed their interactions and understanding of what it meant to be fully loved and accepted. Most of the participants underscored the importance of food in women's lived experiences and explanations of weight gain. Despite this somatic response being dysfunctionally directed to food, this mechanism seemed to be vital to keeping them alive and engaged in the world. Finally, the participants faced layered vulnerabilities, which decreased their opportunities to access resources aimed at better body weight management. Broad approaches that consider emotional and physical care strategies must be proposed to this population.

However, additional analyses also indicate that stigma may persist even with significant post-surgery weight loss. To investigate the stigma-related perceptions and experiences of women who have undergone bariatric surgery and the resulting body transformations, we conducted individual, semi-structured interviews with thirty Brazilian women (15 aged 33–59 and 15 aged 63–72). The resulting text was then analyzed using thematic analysis. We found that some form of weight stigma persisted for our participants, regardless of weight loss. Ongoing experiences of stigma were also evidenced by the constant internal and external vigilance reported by the women, as well as their articulated efforts to distance themselves from their previous bodies. Additionally, participants reported being judged for c...

In this article, we explore the perceptions and experiences of young gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (YGBMSM) of the search, use and adherence to PrEP, considering their positions according to social markers of difference such as race/skin color, gender, sexuality, and social status. Intersectionality provides theoretical and methodological tools to interpret how the interlinking of these social markers of difference constitutes barriers and facilitators in the PrEP care continuum. The analyzed material is part of the PrEP1519 study and is comprised of 35 semi-structured interviews with YGBMSM from two Brazilian capitals (Salvador and São Paulo). The analyses suggest connections between social markers of difference, sexual cultures, and the social meanings of PrEP. Subjective, relational and symbolic aspects permeate the awareness of Pr...

Tools were translated and back-translated, field experts evaluated the conceptual, operational and item-based equivalence and a sample of students assessed tools, evaluating the level of understanding and analyzing internal consistency through Cronbach's coefficient. In addition, the semantic equivalence was assessed though the intraclass correlation coefficient between the bilingual scores in each question of both versions (English and Portuguese). Tools were considered easy to understand (experts scored 95.4% and 97% for the FCQ-T and FCQ-S, respectively, and 81.8% of students considered them easy to understand), and showed satisfactory internal consistency values (FCQ-T ranged from 0.6 to 0.8 and FCQ-S ranged from 0.5 to 0.8). From the cross-cultural adaptation process, the satisfactory results enable the recommendation of the Brazil...

Focus is given to the current format of the program, which presents a multidisciplinary health team able to providing full support to the obese woman who faces trouble to find the society's beauty standards. In our program, we propose a health and quality of life-oriented approach, without a focus on weight loss, following the philosophical principles from “Health at Every Size”. The quantitative and qualitative findings reveal that such approach is promising and may provide an alternative mode of intervention to the traditional one, which is focused on the concept of "weight loss at any cost". The advances on teaching, research and community services will be also addressed throughout the manuscript.O presente artigo relata, brevemente, a história de um curso comunitário destinado a oferecer intervenções não farmacológicas...
