Research paper thumbnail of Tendencies in Database Learning for Undergraduate Students: Learning In-Depth or Getting the Work Done?

Proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Evaluation of Novel Approaches to Software Engineering

There were 79 answers collected from 191 enrolled students that were analyzed and interpreted using thematic analysis. The participants in the study provided two sets of answers, anonymously collected (at the beginning and at the end of the course), thus allowing us to have clear data regarding their interests and to find out their tendencies. We looked into their expectations and if they were met; we concluded that the students want to learn only database basics. Their main challenges were related to the course homework. We combined the information and the answers related to 1) other database-related topics that they would like to learn, 2) how they plan to use the acquired information, and 3) overall interest in learning other database-related topics. The conclusion was that students prefer learning only the basic information that could help them achieve their goals: creating an application or using it at work. For these students, "Getting the work done" is preferred to "Learning in-depth".

The participants in the study provided two sets of answers, anonymously collected (in the begging and in the middle of the course), thus allowing us to track how their interests changed as long as they found out more about the subject. We asked for their experience and initial knowledge, we found out that they are aware of the SQL and databases usability and importance, but they appreciated the database knowledge will be used occasionally. Even if it was not the original scope of the paper, we also found out that men are more interested in learning in depth (acquiring security, performance, complexity database related information) than women do. In terms of participants set, there were 87 answers from 191 enrolled students that were analysed and interpreted using thematic analysis.

Research paper thumbnail of Vector duality for convex vector optimization problems by means of the quasi-interior of the ordering cone

Then we attach to a general vector optimization problem, a dual vector optimization problem with respect to (generalized) weakly efficient solutions and establish new duality results. By considering particular cases of the primal vector optimization problem, we derive vector dual problems with respect to weakly efficient solutions for both constrained and unconstrained vector optimization problems and the corresponding weak, strong and converse duality statements.

This paper analyzed the IT Jobs from a large collection of job listings from a Romanian website. The Web Crawling techniques were used to extract the data from the website, the Text Mining, World Cloud and statistic techniques to analyze and present the results. Insights that are required for an IT Job were extracted. The results highlight the following: the most required IT Job Type was the Full Time one, the Career Level was the Mid Level and the Study Level was the Graduated one. The Text Mining Approach revealed that the most frequent words for the IT Jobs offers were: team, work, development, project, experience, environment, service, skill, customer, knowledge and software. A comparison between terms in IT Jobs in English language versus IT Jobs in Romanian language was also performed. As conclusion, in this paper, by combining different techniques to extract and analyze the textual data set of vacancy o...

This study reports a bibliometric review of the research to date, addressing the EntreComp framework, based on documents published during the period from 2016 to June 2022. The research dataset was collected from Web of Science Core Collection (WoS) and included 37 articles. The bibliometric analysis includes citation, cooccurence and network analysis to represent the between countries and interorganizational collaboration, to identify relationships between documents topics. Along with the bibliometric analysis, a detailed description of characteristics for each article (study design and objectives, instruments, research findings, etc.) was also presented. Overall, this study provides insights regarding research addressing EntreComp framework, that could ...

Research paper thumbnail of Investigating Differences between Ancient and Modern Bacterial DNA in Dental Calculus via Autoencoders

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) encodes the totality of hereditary information of all living organism... more Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) encodes the totality of hereditary information of all living organisms. A plethora of studies in recent years have been dedicated to investigating DNA of various organisms. One of the many research directions focuses on studying ancient DNA molecules sampled from archaeological sites, which may reveal essential insight about lost populations, extinct species, past diseases or bacteria that may have caused epidemics. However, DNA collected from such locations is often subject to degradation and contamination, thus making its analysis even more cumbersome. This paper presents our experiments towards identifying differences between bacterial DNA from ancient and modern samples, which is important information needed by biologists who study ancient DNA. We investigate autoencoders' capability of capturing the internal characteristics of the DNA molecules and of encoding pertinent differences between ancient and modern bacterial DNA. We perform our experime...

The study of the bacterial DNA extracted from human bones excavated from archaeological and anthropological sites aims to analyse the evolution of microorganisms inhabiting the human body and to contribute to new insight related to the health, diet and even migration of our ancestors. This paper aims to offer a solution for the discrimination between ancient and modern bacterial DNA in dental calculus. We propose three internal representations for the considered DNA sequences in order to analyse which captures the most information and is more informative for classification models. Two of these are text-based, while the third one takes advantage of several physical and chemical properties of nucleotides in the DNA. We use a data set containing both ancient and modern dental calculus bacterial DNA and apply two supervised models, namely artificial neural networks and support vector machi...

These vector duals are constructed with the help of the recent Wolfe and Mond-Weir scalar duals for general optimization problems proposed by R.I. Boţ and S.-M. Grad, by exploiting an idea due to W. Breckner and I. Kolumbán. Constrained and unconstrained vector optimization problems are seen as special cases of the initial primal vector optimization problem and from the general case we obtain vector dual problems of Wolfe type and Mond-Weir type for them by using different vector perturbation functions.
