The Semantic Web, the extension that goes beyond the current Web, better enables computers and pe... more The Semantic Web, the extension that goes beyond the current Web, better enables computers and people to effectively work together by giving information well-defined meaning. Knitting the Semantic Web explains the interdisciplinary efforts underway to build a more library-like Web through "semantic knitting." The book examines tagging information with standardized semantic metadata to result in a network able to support computational activities and provide people with services efficiently. Leaders in library and information science, computer science, and information intensive domains provide insight and inspiration to give readers a greater understanding in the development, growth, and maintenance of the Semantic Web.

Librarians are uniquely qualified to play a major role in the development and maintenance of the Semantic Web. Knitting the Semantic Web closely examines this crucial relationship in detail. This single source reviews the foundations, standards, and tools of the Semantic Web, as well as discussions on projects and perspectives. Many chapters include figures to illustrate concepts and ideas, and the entire text is extensively referenced.

Topics in Knitting the Semantic Web include:

RDF, its expressive power, and its ability to underlie the new Library catalog card for the coming century
the value and application for controlled vocabularies
SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organization System), the newest Semantic Web language
managing scheme versioning in the Semantic Web
Physnet portal service for physics
Semantic Web technologies in biomedicine
developing the United Nations Food and Agriculture ontology
Friend Of A Friend (FOAF) vocabulary specification--with a real world case study at a university
and Much more!

Knitting the Semantic Web is a stimulating resource for professionals, researchers, educators, and students in library and information science, computer science, information architecture, Web design, and Web services.

Don't know where you should begin or how those resources should or can be described? Working in groups with common interests, workshop participants will engage in hands-on activities developing an AP. We invite participants to bring their own real world problems in order to ground the activities of the workshop in practical ways. By the end of the workshop, participants will understand the concept of application profiles, the processes used in their development, and their importance to the Linked Open Data ecosystem. This workshop will help you answer the questions above by teaching you how to develop a metadata application profile . An application profile (AP) is a kind of schema and documentation that: (a) defines metadata records, (b) describes the structure and the content of those records, (c) defines which properties will be used from existing schemas and those you need to create, and (d) helps you to optimize the resul...

It aims to present the motivation for this special issue of Library High Tech (LHT), specifically the theme of linking and opening vocabularies (LOV) as a component of the LOD landscape. The editorial also seeks to describe the content of the papers and their contributions in the areas of current practice, trends, and R&D (research and development). Design/methodology/approach – The editorial is organized into four main sections: Introductory aspects about linking open data; the context and inspiration for this special issue of LHT; a description of the accepted papers highlighting their contribution for LOV; and a conclusion. Findings – The editorial presents several reflective insights for advancing LOD and LOV practices that may lead toward a more integrated semantic web. Theoretical reflections on both the negative and positive long-term outcomes of the social web for libraries, archives, and museums are presented and confronted with empirical observations regarding the use of social tagging and user comments. This combination of a theoretical and an empirical approach will provide original insights into the longterm implications of user-generated metadata for cultural heritage institutions.

We present a general overview of how metadata can be interpreted differently, and then elaborate specific typologies of metadata schemas, metadata schemes, and metadata elements. The second part of the chapter focuses on how these metadata schemas, schemes and elements, which are in a sense abstract constructions and containers, are being deployed by their user communities. Concluding, the analysis of concrete metadata uses discussed within the second part provides new refinements to the metadata types and vocabularies discussed in the first part.

It effectively analyses selected set of tools in order to prove the validity of the method. Design/methodology/approach A set of 27 criteria grouped in five evaluation indicators is proposed and applied to ten vocabulary management applications which are compliant with the SKOS data model. Previous studies of controlled vocabulary management software are gathered and analyzed, to compare the evaluation parameters used and the results obtained for each tool. Findings The results indicate that the tool that obtains the highest score in every indicator is Poolparty. The second and third tools are, respectively, TemaTres and Intelligent Theme Manager, but scoring lower in most of the evaluation items. The use o...

It describes the context and principal features for this metadata format, as well as its posibilities and potencial development to enhance information retrieval in Internet. Some years after this paper(2004) RDF became a W3C recommendation and it is more and more used to describe digital objects in particular digital libraries or to create particular application profiles.

Different institutional repositories have chosen and use different metadata models, elements and values for describing the range of digital objects they store. Thus, this paper analyzes the current use of metadata describing those Learning Objects that some open higher educational institutions' repositories include in their collections. The goal of this work is to identify and analyze the different metadata models being used to describe educational features of those specific digital educational objects (such as audience, type of educational material, learning objectives, etc.). Also discussed is the concept and typology of Learning Objects (LO) through their use in University Repositories. We will also examine the usefulness of specifically describing those learning objects, setting them apart from other kind of documents included in the repository, mainly scholarly publications and research results of the Higher Education institution.

17 item 31 (2002) / 17-51
