First, the US consular network in Spain is analyzed, which seems to depend on the perception that merchants and captains had about its usefulness. Subsequently, the analysis of the movement of ships to and from Spanish ports, the usual routes used by this traffic and the merchandise object of this trade are addressed. An exhaustive examination of the investigated sources is also made, especially the documentation of the American customs, along with commercial correspondence and the press.

For years there was an intense debate on the trade of Cádiz at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. While some authors affirmed the commercial collapse, others have qualified and revised this thesis by proposing that it was a process of gradual adaptation until 1820. This article aims to offer a different perspective through the analysis of six family trajectories (Ágreda, Gargollo, González Nandín, Izquierdo, Retortillo and Rábago) and its objective is to analyse the accommodation strategies of these relatives, and thus to verify microscopically to what extent there was a true collapse of trade, or if, on the contrary, mechanisms were deployed to prolong and maintain the activity mercantile and financial.

An important part of this trade was based on the exports of products such as wheat flour, rice and salted fish toward the southern regions of Europe. This highly speculative trade was favoured by the revolutionary and Napoleonic wars of the years 1790-1814. Alongside those goods, re-exports also came from Spanish America, the Americans performed as neutrals. Iberian ports were the destination of these exports and particularly Lisbon and Cadiz. This paper will attempt to determine the American road to the port of Cadiz, between 1788 and 1715, using the call log entries Diario de la Vigía. Through these documents and private correspondence of merchants, the routes used by U.S. vessels, the products they carried, who were the consignees and agents as the commercial networks were built that Americans used to handle this type of business in Cadiz

In this context of opening market and expansion of U.S. commercial network it must fit the business conducted by the U.S. citizen Richard Wonsan Meade in Spain and particularly in Cadiz. Richard W. Meade was a member of a merchant family in Philadelphia, however he moved to Cadiz
to continue and expand his businesses in 1804 . Overthere, he tried to win the U.S. consulate, and was appointed as Naval Agent. For seventeen years he resided permanently in Cádiz and was involved in a series of financial transactions with the
Spanish Regency that contributed to his bankruptcy. In 1819, he returned to the U.S. leaving behind outstanding claims and suits against the Spanish Government, some of which were reflected in the Treaty of Florida that year.
