The Internet mediates our lives, our relationships and our ability to exercise our human rights; it is a global public space, but one that is built predominantly on private infrastructure. Since Internet protocols play a central role in the management, development and use of the Internet, the relation between protocols and the aforementioned rights should be documented and any adverse impacts of this relation should be mitigated.

Herein, we report a comparative genomic analysis of nine strains on the full repertoire of CAZymes, secretion systems, and resistance mechanisms to environmental challenges. Moreover, B. coagulans Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) immune system along with CRISPR-associated Cas) genes, was also analysed. Overall, this study expands our understanding of the strains genomic diversity of B. coagulans to fully exploit its potential in biotechnological applications.

In Latin America, most countries contacted and negotiated with the enterprise. Nonetheless, the use of the malware in the region is illegal and amounts to grave violations of human rights. Given the history of authoritarian and dictatorial countries in the region, how do we analyze the implications for democratic institutions in these countries? What is the impact for dissidence and journalism and in the region when facing this invasive malware?

We analyzed the strategies of influential bots seeking to affect the immigration debate before the 2018 U.S. midterm elections. Our findings reveal that the 10 most influential bots in our dataset all presented an anti-immigration viewpoint, and both posted original tweets and retweeted other bot accounts' tweets to give a false sense of authenticity and anti-immigration consensus. Bots' messages relied heavily on negative emotional appeals by spreading harassing language and disinformation likely intended to evoke fear toward immigrants. Such accounts also employed polarizing language to entrench political group identity and provoke partisanship. Our findings help to understand the interaction and messaging tactics employed by political bots and suggest potential strategies that may be employed to counter their effectiveness.

While the official statistics show that 51.5% of women in Mexico are connected, the definitions under which this data is built hide the reality facing a majority of women — particularly those with less income and those living in rural areas.

The agency responsible for measuring internet access in Mexico defines “access” as a “household connection”. But for us, that is just one layer of access. True access to the internet exists when it serves as a tool to learn and acquire knowledge; when, as women, we can pay for connectivity without abandoning other priorities; if it has interesting and relevant content; if we can produce and co-create what we read and see; if the internet is a safe space to share and disagree, in our community and in our language. Failure to incorporate these factors into our national measure of internet access means we do not have a true understanding of internet access and use for women in Mexico https://webfoundation.org/2018/05/the-hidden-gender-gap-internet-access-statistics-in-mexico/
