Globally, every year more than 500,000 women die during pregnancy or deliveries, and 90 percent of these deaths occur in Africa and Asia. The deaths are often of the preventable kind. Consequently, the study investigated causes of maternal mortality in the light of free maternal health care in Ghana. This empirical study was quantitative in design and conducted at the UCC Hospital during the second semester of the 2010/2011 academic year. Fifty pregnant women who attended antenatal care at the UCC Hospital were selected using the stratified sampling technique for the study. The researcher found that mothers were satisfied with the care received at the UCC Hospital which they rated as very good. This was however evident in the maternal mortality ratio of the UCC Hospital being 0.0003 which was a positive sign. The study recommended that the intensification of education on maternal health services, through mobile clinics so that all deliveries could possibly be at a health institution. Provision of day care centres at the maternity unit of the hospital could encourage patronage since expectant mothers faced the challenge of care provision for their little children whilst away at the antenatal centre.
