Little research has concerned criterion-related validity of heterosocial self-report inventories.... more Little research has concerned criterion-related validity of heterosocial self-report inventories. 82 undergraduate men responded to the Survey of Heterosocial Interactions, Situation Questionnaire, and Dating and Assertion Questionnaire and also had heterosocial skillfulness rated during an analog interaction. Scores on the interaction survey correlated the highest ( r = .43) with ratings of global skill, and a four-variable regression model accounted for 31% of the ratings' variance. The significant relationships between these inventories and ratings of skill provide some evidence for criterion-related validity of these measures.

Battered, Counseling, and Control women were administered an interpersonal problem-solving inventory and asked to generate as many behavioral options as possible for each problem and then to select the one option they wouM chose to use in the given situation. All options were rated for effectiveness by two "bfind" raters. Subjects were also administered the BETA intelligence test, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Form-Y. Analysis of variance found no significant differences between the groups for intelligence, but the Counseling women were significantly more depressed and anxious than the Battered or Control women. Analysis of covariance (using BDI and STAI scores as covariates) found that Battered women: (1) generated fewer total options, (2) generated fewer effective options, and (3) chose fewer effective options for use in the situation than both Counseling and Control women. These findings provide indirect support for a general problem-solving skills deficit in battered women and reinforce the importance of problem-solving skills training for battered women.

Twelve couples seeking marital therapy (dissatisfied) and 16 couples seeking marital enhancement (satisfied) were interviewed with spouses together or separated. Interview items focused on marital satisfaction and perception, demographic variables, and comfort in making assertive responses. Couples were then administered several marital satisfaction and assertion questionnaires. Each husband and wife also participated in a structured analogue communication assessment in which they discussed a problem area in their marriage. The verbal interchanges during the communication exercises were coded by trained observers. The results of the study suggested (a) a high degree of discriminant validity for the marital interview, (b) higher interspouse correlations for interview items during joint interviews, (c) higher indices of criterion-related validity for separate interviews, and (d) a significant relationship between the reactivity of joint interviews and the social sensitivity of the interview item. The implications of these findings for marital intake interviews are discussed.

Factor analysis of the survey revealed three factors: passive contact, active intentions for dating, and dating interactions. The reliabilities of the three subscales, as determined by coefficient alpha, were .87, .91, and .93 for males and .90, .90, and .92 for females, respectively. Correlations with

In contrast, multicultural theory proposes that affirmation toward one's group--particularly with respect to ethnicity--should correspond with higher levels of acceptance toward dissimilar groups. These competing theories were examined with 486 non-Hispanic White, African American, and Hispanic/Latino university students to determine if support would be found for either theory. Consistent with SIT, levels of ethnic identity correlated significantly with levels of ethnocentrism for Whites and Hispanics but not for African Americans. African Americans obtained significantly higher ethnic identity and self-esteem scores than the other 2 groups. Implications of the findings are discussed.

The nine inventories selected are: the Bem Sex Role Inventory, the Derogatis Sexual Functioning Inventory, the Dyadic Adjustment Scale, the Relationship Belief Inventory, the Sexual Arousability Inventory, the Sexual Behavior Inventories (female, male, and couple versions), and the Sexual Interaction Inventory. The approach of Forbes and Cottle was utilized to assess reading level because it uses vocabulary difficulty and does not require complete sentences. The results indicated that a college-level reading ability was necessary to comprehend many of the items contained in most of the inventories. Thus, caution must be exercised when administering such inventories to individuals with a low level of educational attainment in order to avoid unreliable and invalid test results.

Common measures of female heterosocial functioning, the Survey of Heterosocial Interactions for F... more Common measures of female heterosocial functioning, the Survey of Heterosocial Interactions for Females (SHI-F) and dating frequency questions, were validated against the criterion of"male liking," i.e., how well men like a woman. The SHI-F was unrelated to the criterion and to the other measures of heterosocial activity. The dating frequency and satisfaction questions were moderately related to the criterion. It was concluded the self-reported ability to initiate contact with men (as measured by the SHI-F) may not be related to female heterosocial functioning. Self-reported dating frequency and satisfaction appear to be a valid measure of female heterosocial functioning.

The study compared subjects' evaluations of detailed taped descriptions of behavioral exchange/contracting procedures and communication/problem-solving skills training as they were applied to two hypothetical clinical marital cases.
