A Cultural History of Fairy Tales in the Long Eighteenth Century

Inconnue du grand public moderne et presque oubliée des critiques, Charlotte-Rose de Caumont de l... more Inconnue du grand public moderne et presque oubliée des critiques, Charlotte-Rose de Caumont de la Force était renommée par ses contemporains aussi bien par son talent d'écrivain et son esprit vif et plaisant que par sa vie à la cour de Louis XIV. Dans une lettre du 27 septembre 1720, Madame rappelle que : « Les Mémoires de la Reine Marguerite de Navarre sont un roman composé par Mademoiselle de la Force ; & la vie de cette Demoiselle est elle-même un roman. Elle est d'une grande & bonne maison : mais excessivement pauvre. » (48) En écho aux propos de Madame, au fil des siècles, la production narrative de Mlle de La Force a fini par se confondre avec l'auteur, et l'on trouve de nos jours une fictionnalisation de sa vie qu'elle n'aurait sûrement pu imaginer de son vivant. Elle-même victime de ce qu'elle aurait inventé, il est maintenant difficile de séparer sa biographie véritable d'une suite d'anecdotes romanesques que la postérité aura bien voulu conter. Dans cet article, il s'agira d'une part de présenter les faits de sa vie qui semblent les plus réels, en laissant de côté les légendes. Ensuite, nous examinerons sa production littéraire en fonction de l'opinion de ses contemporains et éditeurs. Enfin, il sera question de cerner l'apport de Mlle de La Force dans l'écriture féminine du XVII e siècle, tel qu'il est analysé par la critique moderne. Charlotte-Rose de Caumont, une demoiselle qui « mérite qu'on tente de la faire revivre » (Tallemant des Réaux 89) Mlle de la Force descend d'une grande famille huguenote du Périgord, remontant au XI e siècle. Elle serait née vers 1650 à « Castelmoron près de Bazas » du marquis de Castelmoron et de Marguerite de Viçose. (La Force 59) Elle est donc La Force par son père et Castelnau par les liens maternels, ce qui l'apparente à une autre conteuse célèbre de l'époque, Henriette-Julie de Castelnau, comtesse de Murat. The book is divided into four main parts, followed by outlines and notices of each tale, a bibliography, an index of the main mentioned names, and a table of illustrations. The first section is a long introduction. Next is Perrault’s versified tales and their prefaces. They are followed by the published tales of the 1697 Histoires ou contes du temps passé, including the dedication, illustrations, and an extract of the king’s privilege. This article outlines technologically-enhanced pedagogy designed to motivate students to acquire ... more This article outlines technologically-enhanced pedagogy designed to motivate students to acquire a deeper understanding of their own culture by studying its past. We specifically apply this to teaching Early Modern French fairy tales within the context of Disney culture, according to five cycles; each representative of a body of stories while introducing a specific aspect of criticism. The structure and assessment integrate the latest tech-culture to enhance knowledge, collaboration, enthusiasm, and relevance, by recreating a seventeenth century French literary salon in virtual environments, allowing students to directly experience talewriting across the centuries.

took part in the growing criticism against the monarchy of Louis XIV by
using the popular medium of fairy tales to illustrate their often satirical and subversive viewpoints on the subject. The focus of this article is on the ideology of masculinity under Louis XIV—particularly as it emerged in the pageantry of war—and the way women writers responded to it with fairy tales. How are war and masculinity illuminated by gender-bending in the tales, and how does the sociohistorical context of cross-dressing in the tales respond to the crisis around men and war? I will analyze and compare two of these tales about women soldiers and exemplify the different treatments their authors give female power, cross-dressing, war, and masculinity in the society of their times: “Marmoisan, or the Innocent Deception” (“Marmoisan, ou l’innoncente tromperie: nouvelle héroïque et satirique,” 1695) by Mlle L'Héritier, “Belle-Belle or the fortunate Knight” (“Belle-Belle ou le chevalier Fortuné,” 1698) by Mme d'Aulnoy.

In this paper, we will analyze these two styles of fairytale writing – the bourgeois and the aris... more In this paper, we will analyze these two styles of fairytale writing – the bourgeois and the aristocratic – to show that some seventeenth-century fairytale female aristocratic writers were intriguingly well ahead of their time in challenging the economic zeitgeist and anticipated the paradigm shift that gave rise to classical political economy in the works of the 18th century Physiocrats and Adam Smith. We see this as an example of artistic developments anticipating scientific ones, especially when given freedom from disciplinary and canonical constraints.
