Particularly, there is an emphasis on the materiality inherent within these films, alongside an investigation into colour via a psychoanalytical and semiotic context.
This essay explores the ethical issues that exist in depicting the suffering migrants encounter i... more This essay explores the ethical issues that exist in depicting the suffering migrants encounter in Gianfranco Rosi's 2016 film Fire at Sea. In particular, I discuss Fire at Sea’s problematic representation of migrants; focusing on how Rosi both falls victim to, and attempts to overcome, the complexities inherent within their portrayal. Further to this, Rosi’s attempts to incite change via authentic approaches and aesthetics of displacement is examined.

A detailed technical analysis is done on Argento's 1975 film Profondo Rosso with discourse regarding how these two films conform to archetypal giallo conventions, whilst nurturing Argento's distinctive auteurist touch.
