Large-scale urban development projects are seen as neo-liberal planning practises used to increas... more Large-scale urban development projects are seen as neo-liberal planning practises used to increase cities’ attractiveness in the increasingly competitive urban hierarchy, resulting in neglected social welfare issues. The study explores the social effects of new-build development of vacant land in Norra Alvstranden, Gothenburg. It is shown that the area has become a high-income enclave that can increase the core-periphery polarisation that the city is experiencing. It is argued that, due to contextual specifics of the geographical location, it is unlikely that the development will result in any form of displacement.
